Your Favourite Aircraft Sound?

Sat Dec 18, 2004 3:26 am

Hello,

What is you favourite sound of any airliner ever?

From the outside:

Concorde roaring above my head
The 737-200 roaring up at the end of the runway

From the inside:

The 737, when you are just about to start moving under the aircrafts power, like a wind sound!
The A320 CFM takeoff roll sounds, none other like it,

What are yours?

Sam Big thumbs up

I like the sound of take-off from the inside of the plane, and I like the sound of landing from outside the plane.

RR RB211 (B757,L1011)
RR Trent (B777)
GE CF6 80 (A300,DC10,747)
CFM56 (A340,B707/E6/KC135,DC8,A319,320,321) It doesn't sing the same song on the 737.
JT9 (B747,DC10,C5A,C5B,A300)

Does the RR Trent on the A340-500/600 have any fan growl?
I don't understand everything I don't know about this.

Funnily enough, whilst I love everything to do with civil aviation, I'm actually quite a nervous flyer (although I have improved a lot lately), so for me it has to be the sound of the engines shutting down at the end of the flight!!

1.The scream of four JT3D engines of a 707 on short final.

2.The moo of three RB211-22 engines spooling up on an L-1011.

Internal:A320, i love the sound of all engines shutting down from inside.

External:Britten Norman BN-2 Islander take-off and ATR72/42 Reverse thrust. I also like the sond of 757's taking off. Has anyone ever heard a RJ100 banking? Makes a weird howling noise, that is great!

When I hear a TU-154 I just hope she makes it to the runway. My father used to work on ramp at LGW and passengers have simply refused to board the plane looking at the thing, so they had to offload their bags,

Sorry but the sounds of jet airliners are just too similar. Great sounds come from all over the industry.

I like the sound of jet engine igniters when you can hear them. The early Lear was good for that - you could hear the igniters popping a hundred yards away.

The B-36 bomber with its six pusher engines turning windmill-sized, slow turning props had a wonderful sound.

A couple of years ago there was a DC-6 that took off and climbed past my house every couple of days. I'd run outside to listen to that.

Any high-speed fly past by a jet should give you goosebumps. I have video of a low level high speed pass by a DC-9 and it sounds like a century-series fighter.

Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

I like it when a heavy is on final and your right under the flight path. That second from the point where you can't hear it at all to when all its engine noise makes it to you. Makes it sounds so powerful.

RR Trent on B777s.
JT8D on B737-200s.
The sound of DC3 flying overhead. I really miss it.

Love the takeoff spool-up, as well as reverse thrust (with hopefully hours of separation between hearing the two Big grin)

But then again, I like pretty much any aircraft sound, excepting of course *whoop whoop*~ "pull up"!  Big grin

Spooling up for takeoff. Especially after hearing it spool up for 3 seconds every 2 minutes during the 17-plane queue for takeoff. The "herd moving one plane-length" spool-up is like going up the chain on a rollercoaster, lots of anticipation and lots of teasing. But you can tell the difference in the first note of the takeoff power-up, from the very first millisecond it has more authority and says "hang on, here we go!" It's like going over the first drop on the rollercoaster -- I get that same rush during the takeoff roll.  Love

1. L-1011 startup
2. Dash 8 props feathering during taxi as engine speed is increased/reduced
3. L-1011 ceiling light panels clattering like transit bus windows during hard landings and on rough taxiways

Funniest: Toilet seats slamming down during hard landings, abrupt turns or hard braking

My favourite would be the sound as the engines spool up for takeoff, closely followed by the fizz of Dom Perignon being poured for me at my First Suite. (I wish)

How can you forget the Fffffflaps !!!

Also there is one sound which you cannot actually here but is my favorite sound....

When a 777 spools up from idle to take off power there is an extremely high pitched sound for about 2-3 seconds which no one can hear b/c. it is above the highest frequency audible to the human ear. Yes that is one of the unique features on the T7.
If it ain't Boeing, I'm not going !

Inside:

The 737-300/400/500 as it just begins to taxi away from the gate- that howling sound is great! You can really imagine the air being wrenched through those engines.

Outside:

Hearing a B747-200 (with RR RB211s) starting up. The brief booming sound that each engine emits when ignited. You can hear it from the anywhere around the airport!

Love the thunderous rumble coming from a F-14 Tomcat as it's knelt down and locked into the catapult shuttle on a carrier, as I'm knelt down only 15 feet away.
