If I Were Starting My Own Airline....

Wed May 25, 2005 12:05 pm

If you were given money to start your own airline what kind of airline would you make? Where would you base it? Where would you go to? What a/c would you fly? Anything else you would do?

I'm about to write a paper on this topic and have been thinking about it, its really tough to say. I think i would try to start a virgin atlantic type airline but base it in the US. I'd make it a cool trendy upscale but still some low fares with great perks and always innovative. What would you do?

First rule [to everyone, not just you]: if you're really serious about these kinda ideas, DO NOT share them with the world, especially on a board such as this.

There's something to be said for NDAs and confidentiality for those who are really serious. Call it paranoia, but if you think your idea's a winner, err on the side of caution.

If it had to be a US-based airline, I'd return the money and tell the person they're crazy.  Wink

Then I'd use my own money to invest in additional education and find opportunities which are stable long term, but also the ability and knowledge to identify when things aren't going well and move on.

I think one Sir Richard once said something like: "the fastest way to become a millionaire in the aviation business is to start with ten millions".

Wow, if only money was no Object! This is all off the cuff and more fantasy.
But, I would forge a new three (3) airline alliance. This alliance could be named
Thor, The New Aviation Order or, Presidential Alliance! Three classic airline marquis would be revived. Remember, money is of no object and all the legal details have been worked out.

Eastern would be back and better than ever. Eastern may even take over or annex FL my current home. Eastern would incorporate a lot of the big three LCC ideas for low fares and maybe incorporate the TV's (JetBlue) and XM Radio (FL). With the exception of us FL, MIA is totally shunned by WN and JetBlue! Eastern returns and eventually is going to again regain it's rightful place as MIA's number 1 carrier. Early in the game, a lot of point to point flights to MIA. BWI-MIA, IAD-MIA, DCA-MIA, PHL-MIA, EWR-MIA, JFK-MIA. Also from Syracuse, ATL, ORD, Charlotte and other East Coast and Midwest cities. Aircraft in the beginning would be rehabbed 757-200's and 717's. Ea may even toy with 767's and triple 7's.
Now remember, at Eastern, money is no object and, my syndicate will have enough influence to persuade our politicos that what's good for Eastern is good for their constituents. Something new, for Eastern would be Casino shuttle flights to ACY from BWI, DCA, PHL, EWR/JFK and BOS. Casino jet junkets modeled after the casino busses. And of course my group has just taken over and totally restored and rehabbed the Ritz in Atlantic City with the addition of 1000 additional rooms. This casino would be either Spades Boardwalk or Mr. Lucky's! And of course this casino and eventually Atlantic City would have Eastern as the Official Airline of Atlantic City, and Mr. Lucky's Boardwalk or Spades Boardwalk Casino!
Eventually, Eastern would get back a lot of it's Miami-Caribbean/Latin American flights. Eastern would be the launch customer of the new Dash 2100 which would be in the range of an MD80 or 717 with the revived UDF (Unducted Fan) jet engine. This bird would be the backbone of all the shuttle flights. And, Eastern would also get back the DCA-New York-Boston shuttle and add shuttle flights out of BWI. And within the next 20 years, Eastern would be the official launch customer of the Boeing 797 which replaces the 737's and 757's. Different configurations to match size and markets. But I'm saving the best for last! Eastern will be the official launch customer of the Boeing 2707 HSCT (Hypersonic Commercial Transport) with flights from New York, BWI, Miami to Latin America.

With this livery, I'd add the Sun King on the tail maybe substituting the O in National. Or, possibly this livery.

This National would start where the last incarnation of this once great airline left off when it folded in 2002. Las Vegas would be the prime destination along with Miami. National and Eastern would design and share a hub in possible Oklahoma CT or if the incentives are still prime DFW. National would fly nonstop point to point flights from BWI, IAD, DCA, PHL, LGA, BOS and from other East Coast City's to Sin CT. Nationals fleet would consist of Boeing 787's, and 757's. There may even be LAS to LHR, MIA to LHR and BWI - LHR service using 787's. Service to Oklahoma CT and or DFW would commence from BWI, PHL, LGA, MIA and other East and Midwest cities using the 757's, and then continuing on to LAS. National may consider Can service from the afore mentioned cities. Down the line, National may get it's chance to have a HSCT Boeing 2707 or two in it's fleet with it's LHR-LAS service. Ok, it ain't politically correct but, a core of flight attendants would be decked out in not too much clothing, sort of like Hooter's girls and also administer shoulder massages and may even do some secretarial service for high stressed business passengers out of New York and Boston to LAS and MIA.  bigthumbsup  Sort of the Fly Me, I'm Missy concept updated for the 21st. Century.

By now, you all must be wondering what drugs I've been taking? Has Zippyjet finally gone off the runway? Or, some may wonder if I've been chug a lugging the blue/green chemical goodies from the Lavs?

If I started my own airline, it'd be an STOL freight operation in Alaska and maybe Northern Canada.
I don't know, so this is my signature.

To have a winning airline strategy, you must do the following:
You must do the polar OPPOSITE of what the major carriers have been doing over the past 28 years (since deregulation) and the past three years in particular. Why is it possible for the LCCs to make money and for United, Delta, American, Continental, Northwest, and all the majors to lose money? Until the majors figure that question out and start doing something about it, there is plenty of opportunity for someone new to come in and take over and make a bucket full of money.

I would have to say an air cargo company with contracts for DHL/FedEx and UPS. Flying remote operations where they don't have air service. Bring on the Cessna Cargomasters and ATR 42s! Where ever they needed us, we'd go.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!

Any points in the world that have demand.

One thing holds true for any new start-up..You would have to work very hard to burn through cash like the so called "legacy carriers", go for it!!

If I was a billionaire, I might start an airline called AmeriCanadian. The logo would be a maple leaf (like AC) but it would have the american flag colors on it. I'd start out with CRJ's, SAAB, then work my way up to Boeing 737's. I would have bases in DCA, and Toronto. After I made a success, I would start a regional carrier called CanAm Express with CRJ's operating for AmeriCanadian.
