Stupid Airline Names

Sat Aug 13, 2005 11:25 pm

I’m sure that most of you, like me, spotted an airline out there with a name that made you say; “what the hell were they thinking…”

But then again, sometimes the reasons do exist, even though they may not be very obvious.

Egypt - blessed with a very rich culture and traditions is home to one such carrier which, besides so many local inspirations, carries a very American name? Any ideas why?

Memphis is one of the oldest cities in Egypt and I believe the original capital. The city somewhat still exists, but its foundation is only about 10 miles outside of Cairo.
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

As is DeltaMIA.

I think SLeasyjet airline would be better. They don't make service easy.  cry
First Class passengers are my favourites. They can't get any further forward without an ATPL.

Funny to read about Memphis name, which makes me think that New York is York, New Orleans is Orleans (France), Athens GA is Athens Greece, Paris exists in the US too, there are so many cities (inclusive Bern, Switzerland as New Bern) and so on.... USA was a land of immigration from all Europeans! But I guess you all know that!

Anyway, I was thinking about Air Atlanta. Isn't that based in Iceland? Why Atlanta? Does someone know where it came from? Thanx

Independence Air also springs to mind.....with the adds of the employees standing there, holding their pinkies up, I guess trying to show Independence? Or maybe just trying to look like Dr. Evil.

Stupid airline names? Thats easy ....

-Jazz
-Zip
-Tango
-Song
-Zoom
-Ted
-Air Tran (keep wanting to say Air Transvestite for some reason  confused  )

Not a stupid name, but Air Luxor always confuses me. For some reason I keep thinking it's an Egyptian airline (city of Luxor) and not Portuguese.

bmi baby. Not only a silly name, but really boring livery too.

I could never understand Air Luxor of Portugal. Apparently the name is a reference to luxury.

Others....Zoom, Zip, Mytravel and Mytravel Lite. Should be LIGHT!! Mainly because I don't like bastardisations of the English (or any other) language.....

The story I had read was that when the guy that started the airline found out he had been granted an operating certificate to start the airline, he had to come up with a name very quickly and got the name off of the room key of the hotel he was staying at (Not sure if he was here in Atlanta, GA, but considering that Iceland does have a consulate here, it may be the case.).

Considering the airline is a subsidiary of Hooters of America, the name make sense.

Me neither, clearly this was the first name they thought of and went with it. As for their service, I'm sure you heard about the recent stranding of passengers in Turkey I believe, for 15 hours or so due to technical diffculties? They have recently apologised for the way those people were left there, in a small, hot room, hardly anything to drink and breakfast consisted of hamburgers and fries.

When the first of these Air2000 set up in about 1987, the impression I got was that the 2000 bit was a look into the future.....i.e. offering something other UK charter airlines didn't offer at the time. Of course, at the time I did wonder what would happen in 2001!

I remember someone coming back from Greece on Air 2000, and regailing me of how good it was.....it was initially so different, it was almost revolutionary. You got a hot towel  Smile

Canada 3000 was part of the same group when it started.

Do a google search if you don't know what it means.

Touch & Go was one with a name which you don't know if it describes their service, or the crews flying abilities.

Who names an airline TED? I can hear a conversation between to people.

"So who are you flying on this time"
"I am flying on TED."

Does that sound right to any of you.

too bad I got into this too late. Air Memphis was a good one, hope they never hire a pilot called Elvis. Sorry, but I had to make that connection.

A clear winner in Germany must be WIZZ Air - phonetically, the translation means Joke. Giving a name like that to an airline operating in central Euope is as wise as calling a Chevy NOVA, which , in Spanish simply meeans that it does not go.

Ted is not even bad, if they fail with that offspring, they still can go on with "Uni". Anybody remember the TV commercials with Ted and Uni?

Song really does not make sense at all for an airline, however, Delta dawn is a good song.

Flying Jetblue transcon definately gives you a Jetlag and I really wonder how MOL will use the brand name BUZZ, which Ryanair owns, or will his shareholders tell him one of these days, go and start a new carrier, BUZZ OFF.

Another one who could have done better is SN Brussels Airlines. There should have been better alternatives than that.
