Best Views Across The Pacific (Aus/NZ)

Hi,

I'm flying LAX-AKL and SYD-LAX this spring and I'm wondering, from those who have done these legs before, which side of the plane would have the best views.

I'm hoping to see a few islands along the way, though I don't have my hopes too terribly high on that, considering how vast the pacific is I'll consider myself lucky to see anything at all. But I'd like to increase my chances.


The flight from LAX-AKL departs at 9:40pm Pacific Time on April 10, and gets to AKL in the early morning hours (5:10am) of April 12, crossing the date line along the way. Will I see any daylight at all on this flight?


The return flight, SYD-LAX, departs at 1:25pm from Sydney May 1 and flies direct to LAX, arriving at 9:45am. Surely there will be daylight on this flight, but for how long, I don't know. I've never crossed the pacific before.


I have domestic routings from AKL-MEL-ADL-SYD, but it doesn't really matter much to me which side I sit on with these flights as I'll see something new regardless. But over the pacific, with such little land, I'd like to see as much as possible.

No, this flight operates completely in the dark. The first sun you will see is once you have collected your bags at AKL and step out of the terminal.

Noone on here could tell you which side of the aircraft would be better to sit on as on such long routings, aircraft may take many different flight paths, depending on winds etc. So just go for a window seat on either side. I wouldn't hold my breath seeing anything over the Pacific during daylight though. The approach into LAX in the morning is spectular from either side!

AKL-LAX, LAX-AKL, AKL-SFO and SFO-AKL are all night time flights. Only chance you will get is if you catch the NZ B763 from LAX-AKL via one or two pacific islands.

I wasn't really sure what to call it, as it's really not a very long flight compared to the previous LAX-AKL leg.

Sadly I won't be stepping out of the terminal at AKL, I'm only stopping there briefly before continuing on the same plane to MEL. Hopefully I can step off the plane for a bit to stretch my legs but that'd be the full extent of it.

So the only daylight I'll see is on the return flight of SYD-LAX. Well, at least I can say I'll save some space for film, with few shots on the outbound! Big grin

IIRC the correct wording is "Trans Tasman flight" ...

Daylight will be somewhat limited.
With May being southern winter and you´re flying northeast, I roughly would figure around 3 h of daylight after departure and another 2 hours daylight before touchdown (this would be "bright daylight" with dusk and dawn extending the period by a certain degree).

While winds will influence the actually flown route, from a look at Karl´s Great Circle Mapper, I would choose the A-seat. That way you might get lucky and see some islands in the late daylight after your departure.
There´ll be not much to see before touchdown apart from Greater L.A.
Plus using the A-seat, you´ll face out of the sun when approaching LAX.
