The early generation DC-8's, and 707's were probably up there in the higher decibles.

I'd have to say the old 707's, I have only ever seen them in Latin America, but they seemed to be louder than any aircraft I have ever seen, although I wasn't around in the hay days of the 727, 707, 737 Classics, the DC-8's and so forth.

"most loudest"!!??

How about "the loudest" or "most loud"??

The louder, the better as far as I'm concerned....727....737-200....love them.

The Convair 990 Coronado was one of the noisest around I remember.

Last year, I was at Brize Norton Air Force Base, when a RAF VC-10 took off. That was an incredibel sound... But during its scheduled BOAC/BA operations, I didn't find it as noisy as the Trident 3b of BEA/BA, especially when the booster was activated.
Flown all types and variants of Airbus, Boeing, Lockheed, Bombardier, DC, Embraer, Fokker, ATR, plus BAe146-1/2/3, Britannia, Caravelle, Comet, Concord, CV440/990, M404, Herald, Avro, Trident-1/2/3, IL-18/62, SWM, Viscount, VC-10, Tu-104/134/154, YS-11

DC-8-61s were very loud! BAC1-11s Tridents, and RR Conway powered DC-8s and 707s were incredibly loud. Tridents were window shakers when they reversed upon landing. Only the Concorde was louder. Staying at the Excelsior at LHR I could tell when a Trident or Concorde landed without looking out the window simply by the level of noise.

I always remember the Dragonair 732s taking off on Runway 31 from Kaitak -- right over my school. Those were loud.

Whilst I saw very few early pax jets, I do remember the BA VC-10's, the notorious Tridents, especially the T3.
Only ever saw a CV-990 landing at LGW.

But, perhaps it's because it was still operating in an era of mostly high bypass engine powered airliners, my vote goes to the IL-86.
At first, if you could not see it, you'd think it was a Concorde, but not for long, as unlike the SST, the noise went on for much longer, belched a lot more smoke too.
Concorde was in pure decibel terms, perhaps louder, but it was away a lot quicker.

I remember seeing a DC9 taking off from the Allegheny County Airport one time when I was about 10; I also remember holding my ears and wincing as that thing rolled down the runway... I am not sure which runway this would be, but it was taking off right over McKeesport/Glassport...

From my days and experience, the loudest were, 707's, DC8's, DC9's and 727's. THe 732 to a lesser extent, at least those i know...

When Ryanair used to do engine runs in the 732's particularly the hertz one man you could hear that for miles. they even took them out to the center of the airport because the usual engine run area was too close to some houses and a main(ish) road.

Yes for me personally the loudest jet has to be the 737-200

As for the loudest Prop plane the HS 748 was noisy as

MD-80 on climbout!! They are so loud that a company sells a specific attachment for all the MD-80 engines which dampens the sound. I've checked and even with these, AA MD-80s are extremely loud.

In general, the A320 has reverberating noise. I have had a rule of thumb for my spotting which has consistently been accurate:

If I can hear the plane before I see it (i.e., flying overhead from behind me to in front of me) it is either an Airbus or an MD-80. Rolls-Royce Engines!!!!

My loudest experience was when I was spotting at RWY02 at BRU (the train tunnel) where a SN 732 applied full thrust with it's exhaust almost in my direction!
It sounded like guns where shooting, all very small bangs, comparable like the sound you hear when a shuttle takes-off! Awesome!

But I guess there will be far more louder aircrafts then 732!

I'd have to say 732s also. However in my case it's the T-43s from Randolph AFB. I hear those things roaring away on takeoff while I'm at school all the time.

Many good candidates mentioned here already. My choices are:

BAC-111...incredibly loud for such small-looking engines!

KC-135 tankers with the original water-injection engines...what a noise!!!

Ah.. That sound would be the sound of the burner cans popping... (very constant small explosion noises)

Most loudest aircraft?? Uh.. Such nightmarish grammar.. ugh!!!

Anyway, From my time of spotting, the loudest I have heard would be a Northwest DC-9... I was at MKE 19R the other day and one of those bitches took off. DAMN!!! I could feel the shockwave in my chest... The MD-80 is the second loudest... and the 717 is the quietest I have heard (It seems like the Dornier 328 is louder than a 717).

The F-14 Tomcat... Another brilliantly loud fighter bird... I remember seeing one of those at the last Allegheny County Air Show when I was like 4 or 5. I was covering my ears for that thing, and so was everyone else around me!

I saw a post elsewhere once by a guy that worked at an on-airport business at LHR. As I recall it, he said that one Concorde flight had a departure that sometimes came around the time he and coworkers would be outside the building (something to do with lunch, like going to or returning from their cars). If they happened to see Concorde lining up on the runway, they would flee for the building, grabbing out their card-key badges and furiously swiping to get the door open and inside lest the thing go by and cause involuntary bodily functions. Sounds a bit apocryphal, but a great story nonetheless. The point was that the thing was LOUD on takeoff.

For me, I would say the B-1B or the F-14D for the military.

For mainline commercial, excluding the Concorde, would be the 727-200's or DC-9-50's.

For commuter jets, BAC-1-11 or the F-28.

For props, I would say the DC-6, DC-7 or Super Connie.

From inside...

The F-28 or DC-9-10. Props would be either the Metroliner or EMB-110.

The loudest commercial aircraft I have heard, other than Concorde, has to be the BAC 1-11... even with hushkits I found them to be louder than 737-200s. I miss seeing them at Manchester - you could feel the ground vibrate when a 1-11 was launching itself down the runway! I had the pleasure of flying on one of these old warhorses in 1988, with Dan-Air from Manchester to Mahon (Menorca).

The 737-200 for sure, at least in my experiences on the ramp. That is definitely one plane that makes its presence known, especially while standing right next to it, waiting to open up the front bin.

The RAF VC-10 went by my house on approach to 24R and it was quite loud. At first I thought it was a gray DC-9 but when I heard "Ascot ??? on ILS 24R" I knew it was not a DC-9. The occaisional Canadian Air Force F-18 is also loud.

The F-14 Tomcat is the loudest I remember hearing. I remember when Top Gun was at NAS (now MCAS) Miramar, you could hear them takeoff from my house and I live 15min up the freeway from the base. I loved going to the airshows and hearing those guys takeoff. It still brings chills to my spine to see them, and I'm sad they will be gone not too long from now.

I worked at SAN washing AS ron's over the summer, and their MD-80s and the AA MD-80s that were moving about on the ramp/runway made a good amount of noise. We had a couple 727 freighters go out early one morning that were loud, but impressive as well.

Wedge, as you are probably aware, the B-1B is comparable to the Concorde in that is has 4 x afterburning (reheat, for our Euro friends) turbofan engines. It's the 'burners that make those a/c so loud at t/o. As for the F-14, the old P&W TF-30 engines at MIL power were way louder than the GE F-110's in the D-model.

Probably the loudest single-engine military a/c ever built was the F-105 Thunderchief at full A/B. My gawd, it literally would just about knock you over. And this is what many would do the first time (or three) that they heard one taking off while at the departure end EOR...

From childhood experience, AC's DC-8 were the noisiest aircrafts regularly approaching into Dorval, when they overflew my grandparents' home, or my high school (very last days I would see a narrowbody quad going to Dorval: 1980ish). After came the 737-200, then BAC 1-11 and DC-9 (not sure of the order).

Heard once a Trident, on the ground in Paris, from full face. That was startingly loud.

But, of course, Concorde... Lucky me, the only time I saw it taking off in LHR, it was going east on the south runway. It did lift off just in face of us. The whole Terminal 4 was trembling

One word:

Concorde.

I was in a Black Cab on my way to LHR (in a traffic jam at the end of one of the runways).... and all of the sudden I hear a deafening, ear-piercing sound, and I imagine the end of my life is about to take place- because I thought we were about to get hit by a crashing plane.... a few seconds later I see a huge white concorde fly right over my cab causing the entire ground and car to start to shake. (Parked cars had their alarms going off). I then marveled at the thing as it climbed out relatively slowly (maybe I was expecting a rocket-like take off, but really I didnt get what I expected.)

And when it comes to military fighters, I think the Harrier during a hover maneuver is pretty loud.

at ads the other week there was a 732 with no hushkits, it was loud. however after hearing a 707-80 (or whatever the first one is) from the end of the runway there is no longer a set limit to what loud is.
If Continental had a hub at DFW with nonstop flights I would always fly them, unfortunantely good things take time.

In 1980-81, I lived right on the extended centerline of one of the runways at SFO (I forget the runway numbering system right now, but it was directly opposite the bay), and up on top of a cliff, so about 300-400 feet up. So I had all manner of airplanes taking off right above me, including DC-8's, 707's, 727's, DC-9 Super 80's (as they were called then!), DC-10's, L-1011's, etc.

But by far, and I mean by FAR, the loudest takeoffs were the 747-100's with those original JT9D-7A engines.

Now, *part* of that may have been that 747's needed to use more runway and therefore were flying a bit lower over our house. But it wasn't just the number of decibels, it was also the timbre of the growl of those engines - we could literally tell a 747 was coming before it even left the runway, from our living room. We could hear the takeoff roll itself. That was not possible with any other aircraft. (Back then, they used to do full power takeoffs too on those less efficient engines, especially at SFO where there's a lot of terrain to clear.)

The growl itself is still there even on the 747-400, depending on the engine (it may just be a PW thing), but it's much, much quieter now. (The A320 family, I've noticed, has a similar growl, but again it's much quieter.)

These days, I would have to say the loudest AC currently in service over the US has to be the DC-9. In addition to living near SFO in 1980, I also lived under an LGA takeoff pattern from 2000-2002, so I've dealt with those damn DC-9's too. Back in 1980, though, almost all airplanes sounded like that!
I'm tired of being a wanna-be league bowler. I wanna be a league bowler!

RE: Most Loudest Aircraft Ever

Quoting EGNR (Reply 36):
For abolute volume of noise, people I have spoken with say that the Avro Vulcan is pretty close to unbeatable.

Quoting Thunder9 (Reply 42):
Probably the loudest single-engine military a/c ever built was the F-105 Thunderchief at full A/B. My gawd, it literally would just about knock you over. And this is what many would do the first time (or three) that they heard one taking off while at the departure end EOR...

Have to completely agree with these. Saw the Vulcan in full afterburner during a demonstration at the opening ceremonies for DFW. I was around 7 years old at the time and it certainly left an impression.

As for the F-105s, they were the mainstay at Carswell AFB for a number of years and we used to go to see them perform touch and goes along with the BUFFs.

Off topic, but we also liked to watch the B-52s on approach. Every once in a while, small sailboats would be knocked down by the B-52's wing tip vortices as they came in over Lake Worth....
Just give me my Vario, my Ozone Mojo and a gorgeous day of soaring.
