Most of you are all talking about civilian planes, please don't forget these horribly noisy military planes:

- C5A /ask the people around Frankfurt airport, they are all glad the're gone!)
- ALL fighters (esp. low level flying)

Also don't forget the Russian airplanes, so called fuel to noise converters
The best airplane is the one you fly

The 727-200 and the 737-200. When the 1 and only 727 comes in from Sydney, it is the most recognisable aircraft from the loud engines. There is only one 732 stationed in AKL and that is a charter plane so I don't get the opportunity anymore to see it depart or land.

My favourite military plane from the take off - RAAF's F111. Whenuapai used to hold airshows and on one occasion the Aussie Air Force sent some planes over for it. We were sitting right at the end of the runway, not even 300m back from the engines. There was such a blast we were nearly whipped off our feet and the heat of the engines could also be felt. It seemed as though they used afterburners too and it was deafening. It's one experience I will never forget!
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

Man, them 732's are loud as hell, but with the Hushkits, they come in so quietly, i was at LAX for my first time ever 2 summers ago spotting with a friend of mine, and man..... it was quuuuuiiiiiiiieeeeeettttt with the hush puppies on them!

One word:

Concorde.

I was in a Black Cab on my way to LHR (in a traffic jam at the end of one of the runways).... and all of the sudden I hear a deafening, ear-piercing sound, and I imagine the end of my life is about to take place- because I thought we were about to get hit by a crashing plane.... a few seconds later I see a huge white concorde fly right over my cab causing the entire ground and car to start to shake. (Parked cars had their alarms going off). I then marveled at the thing as it climbed out relatively slowly (maybe I was expecting a rocket-like take off, but really I didnt get what I expected.)

That really typified the Concorde experience.

The loudest moment for me was a few years ago when I was at RAF Lossiemouth for a week. 2 Tornados, 2 F15s and a VC10 all in the space of 10 minutes.

you want loud? try sitting near the wing on a TU-154! those things are so loud you can't hear yourself think. a 732 with no hushkits is also loud inside. i'd also give the L1011 a medal for being loud, i can still remember being at Atlanta, in the restroom, in the middle of the terminal and the ground was literally shaking! of course, when i came out, it did not surprise me to see an L1011 spooling up on the tarmac. got to love those good vibrations, not to mention the billowing white smoke. long live the L10.

MD-80 on climbout!! They are so loud that a company sells a specific attachment for all the MD-80 engines which dampens the sound. I've checked and even with these, AA MD-80s are extremely loud.

In general, the A320 has reverberating noise. I have had a rule of thumb for my spotting which has consistently been accurate:

If I can hear the plane before I see it (i.e., flying overhead from behind me to in front of me) it is either an Airbus or an MD-80. Rolls-Royce Engines!!!!

Matt

Heh...if you think the MD-80 and A320 are loud...you have a long way to go lol.

Anyways back to topic.
Loudest I've heard:

Tu-134(the roar as it approaches can be heard for maybe half a minute before it actually passes)
Il-86(sounds like Concorde almost)
VC-10(talk about an ear-splitting roar...love the Conways)
BAC-111(I heard it once and it was pretty ridiculous)
B727, B732: Not nearly as loud as the above but louder than all the new pussy high bypass jets.

Loudest I've heard/seen on film or DVD:
Trident(heard it on a DVD and it was a nasty noise coming from that especially on taxi)
Tu-104(taxi only but still pretty nasty)
Comet(That's one noise you dont forget)
Original B707/DC8(taxies quiet compared to the other early gen jets but the takeoff roar is unbelievable)
CV-990: Words cant describe
Caravelle: I believe I have some footage of one with the Avons but I'm not sure. Either way it sounds mean.

Concerning the Bear...watch some clips of An-22s on flightlevel350 and you'll get an idea(same engines). It doesnt seem that loud I dont know why people think its so loud. Can someone explain to me why its so loud cuz I seem to be missing something?

Loudest currently flying(in order of loudest to quietest):
Tu-134: You really cant find anything else that can beat this
Il-86: Same
B707: Those old JT4Cs pack quite a punch
B727/B732/DC9: All have around the same noise IMO but pretty loud

Loudest my dad has heard. He grew up in Sofia, Bulgaria in the 60s-70s-80s and heard the best of both sides.

Trident
Tu-144(yes it visited Sofia and was hella loud. This was the one with the original NK-144 engines and not the one in the videoclip floating around the net right now of it landing after a test flight.
Tu-134
Caravelle
Il-62 with the original NK-8-2 engines(applies to Tu-154B,B-1 and B-2 as well)
Tu-104
Tu-124
Original B727

That's about it. Look at the planes and you'll see all of the mhave the low bypass engines. The rule of thumb is, the fatter the engine the less noise. Also I only listed civil planes obviously military beats all.

In case of military:
SR-71
Mig-23
Mig-25
F-14
B-1(kinda weak compared to the Mig-25 and SR-71)

Saw the Vulcan in full afterburner during a demonstration at the opening ceremonies for DFW. I was around 7 years old at the time and it certainly left an impression

The Vulcan, as far as I am aware doesn't have afterburners - it used Bristol Olympus engines but not with afterburner - unlike the Concorde which of course did, but you were 7 and I think it's impossible to see a Vulcan demonstration and not be left with a permanent memory!! - Possibly later this year we'll be able to hear the sound of a Vulcan once more if XH558 at Bruntingthorpe gets off the ground - it looks promising!!

Anyway back to loud aircraft -

Anything with afterburners.
Airliners - B707,B727(Pre-Stage 3 hushkits etc),B732, BAC 1-11(Pre & Post hushkit - didn't seem to matter), DC-9, F28 and of course VC-10
Props - Tu-95

The Tupolev TU-22 Bear. The big Kuznetsov NK-12 engines with counter-rotating propellars were incredibel. The NATO-pilots who flew up to them said the noise was annoying for them(!), in a fighter, with a helmet.......

The AV-8B harrier in a vertical takeoff or hover is freaking loud. At Oshkosh one year we measured it at 125dB+ standing a few hundred yards away in the croud.

Bac-111 hands down, pre hush kits

Agree that the BAC 1-11 was a noisy aircraft with her two Spey Mk 511 or 512 engines but the Trident, a lovely old lady who is no longer with us, had three Spey 511/512 engines (and a RB 162 take-off booster engine on the Trident 3B/Super 3B), and was noisier than any BAC 1-11.

When the Trident revesed thrust on landing, there was an almighty roar that made you feel like you were in a fighter aircaft that had just landed on an aircraft carrier at sea. You really experienced jet power from the noise of the Trident.

What a perfect sum of posts up 2 now, cannot agree more: Caravelle is lousyly loud @taxi, Concorde has modified Vulcan bomber engines - both are "crying" > 110dB, C5A, C141, 732, MD-80, DC9, Bac 111 - the list is long - the noise strong. Generally speaking: All old no-bypass engines are very loud because the bypass airstrem in modern turbofans "encapsulates" and therefore also sharply reduces the noise for all directions except direct aft.

For completion there's just a category of airplanes to add:
Spacecraft! That would be my guess:
1. Saturn V (Apollo program moon rocket)
2. The large Russia rockets
3. Space shuttle
4. Ariane V

The Tridents used to fly over my house and there were no 732 that could compete in windows shaking.

I had a nice-length layover in ATL this summer and I was watching the traffic. Out of DC10's, MD11's, 717's, 737's, 757's, 767's, 777's and MD80's, the loudest were the MD80's. I was suprised at how well you could tell the difference just by the volume. The amazing thing is that they are a pretty quiet ride inside!

Mention of Harriers reminds me of the 1982 Farnborough airshow, four Royal Navy Sea Harriers did a formation hover.

Concorde had reheated turbojets, not turbofans.
And in all my time on and around the aircraft, many more years of seeing it regulary at LHR, no one ever lost bowel control, someone was being put on here!

Apparently the SR-71 broke windows for miles around when it was used from bases such as Okinawa during Vietnam. The local people nicknamed it the "black thunder dragon" or something because of the hellish racket.

Pre-hush kit DC-9s were the source of many militant anti-airport NIMBY committees. You don't want pre hush-kit DC-9s flying over your house. I remember what that sounded like and it was harsh.

Then there is the Jetstream 32 while sittting at idle. Kind of unusual as the Garrett is the only engine I have ever heard that gets quieter as power is increased, at least when heard from the outside!

As one who lived under one of the take off paths from LHR in the 60,s [yes sadly the years have added up] I can vouch that a phone conversation in the town of Slough was impossible when either a 707 or a VC 10 was going over.
All of the commercial jets of that era as I remember had a horrible eardrum wrenching scream to them and given todays planes the 747 for instance is a mega quiet bird even at full throttle as there is a much lower frequency to the noise.

Any guys who have been on the flight deck of a US Navy carrier could vouch for this, the EA-6B Prowler has got to be one of the loudest jets ever. I have witnessed flight deck crew people with fillings shaking loose from the jet on the cat in full power. I have heard also from old school Chiefs saying that the RA-5C Vigilante was even louder then that. I cant even imagine an aircraft louder then the Prowler!!

HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO DISCUSS THIS TOPIC AGAIN ?

Aircraft get quieter, the peak of noise levels has long been reached, therefore there is no point for discussing this again.

I'll say standing at the airport pub at MAN and watching Concorde depart from the then Runway24.....that shook my lungs. After that i'm going with the Bac 1-11, boy those things could curdle milk with sound alone.
Off topic slightly, i stood under a flight of B52's approaching RAF Fairford many moons ago and i thought my ear drums were going to explode, and i stood not too far from a RAF Harrier GR7 at Woodford coming in for a slow landing.

Cheers

ps, i remember standing near the TU-95 BEAR as she was taxying in at RAF Fairford......pretty loud, but the sight was unbelievable.

Yeah, well I've suggested your pointless thread for deletion, you bore, with no respect after 640 posts....

Anyway, having lived under the LHR fight path for 12 years, I haven't nearly heard the worst of it, but even 8 miles out from LHR the 747-100/200 aircraft were very noisy, due to their sluggish climb rates and loud engines, they would rattle the windows and make pictures shake on the wall. MD-80s and 737-200s were quite compared to those! I wonder what it was like in the days of 707's and Tridents, before my time!

Some FAA stats for JETS:
Here is some data according from the FAA's commercial jet aircraft database: http://www.aee.faa.gov/noise/AC_36-1H.htm

The five loudest commercial airplanes are:

Takeoff / Flyover:
1 - Aerospatiale / BAe Concorde (119.5 EPNdB)
2 - Boeing 747-200 (110.0 EPNdB)
3 - Antonov AN-124 (109.9 EPNdB)
4 - Ilyushin IL-86 (109.2 EPNdB)
5 - Boeing 747-100 (108.4 EPNdB)

Sideline:
1 - Aerospatiale / BAe Concorde (112 EPNdB)
2 - Boeing 727-200 (104.7 EPNdB)
3 - Boeing 737-200Adv (104.4 EPNdB)
4 - Ilyushin IL-86 (104.2 EPNdB)
5 - Douglas DC-9-30 (103.7 EPNdB)

Approach:
1 - Aerospatiale / BAe Concorde (117 EPNdB)
2 - Ilyushin IL-76TD (108.9 EPNdB)
3 - Douglas DC-8-63 (108.5 EPNdB)
4 - Boeing 707-300B (108.3 EPNdB)
5 - Antonov AN-124 (108.2 EPNdB)

3 - Embraer EMB-135ER/145ER (77.9 EPNdB)
4 - Boeing 717-200 (78.1 EPNdB)

2 - Embraer EMB-135ER/145ER (84.4 EPNdB)
3 - Yakolev YAK-40 (85.5 EPNdB)
4 - British Aerospace BAe 146-200A (86.6 EPNdB)

2 - Fairchild-Dornier 328JET-300 (91.1 EPNdB)
3 - Boeing 717-200 (91.3 EPNdB)
4 - McDonnell Douglas MD-90-30 (91.7 EPNdB)
5 - Bombardier CRJ-200 (92.1 EPNdB)

TURBOPROPS:
Heres the deal the loadest airplanes in the world are the fastest props in the world. The TU-95 Bear, and the XF-84H, The Bear of course was the only one in production, but both are the loadest for the same reasons. the turboprop is spinning at such a high rpm that the tips are breaking the speed of sound. This causes multiple if not almost constant sonic booms in addition to engine noise. As I said in my previous post the XF-84 was so noisy that ground crews got phyically ill working near the plane after engine start.

Scroll down this link for a picture of a XF-84H:

ROTOR CRAFT:
Nobody mentioned the Fairey Rotodyne - read more about it here:

The latter was so loud it was banned - and this was during the time when the likes of the Hawker Hunter, A-4 Skyraider, and 707/DC-8 "water wagons" graced (or disgraced) the skies!

Not necessarily the loudest, but NOTHING beats the sound of a B-52 during taxi and takeoff. Gives me a chill down my spine just thinking about it...

Those things are sooo loud! In February I went to KPDX, and I was spotting planes with my friend, when I heard what sounded like the ORANG F-15's departing. I ran over to the side, and saw one of those Raytheon Beechjet 400's taking off, I was totally amazed! Wow!

Loudest airliner in my opinion is the 707!  Smile

Commercial plane: my vote goes to the 707.
It's not just the destination, it's the journey.

Quoting SR100 (Reply 6):
Last year, I was at Brize Norton Air Force Base, when a RAF VC-10 took off. That was an incredible sound

Agreed. When Dad worked at Brize, he used to take me along every now and then and when a VC10 took off, it was loud.

MD80s out of Exeter when I've heard them have been loud, but of the aircraft I've actually SEEN, Concorde was the loudest at take-off, but as GDB said, it was away fairly quickly.

The loudest plane that has ever flown past me was the Vulcan in the early 90s flying into Upper Heyford. Or a Tornado that passed us at about 200 feet over Dartmoor once!

Please note these were all subsonic, I've never heard the sonic boom from directly underneath. We used to get 2 rumbles in the evening about an hour apart in the days of AF and BA Concordes, but they were just rumbles.
I came, I saw, I Concorde! www.gofundme.com/lineupandwait

I would think that this would qualify as the loudest aircraft ever

The North American XB-70A Valkyrie was probably the loudest aircraft ever. Six turbojet engines with afterburner it had to be a screamer!

My vote for the Trident. I remember very well the sound of that plane taking-off from GVA during my school classes and whispered to my friends "That's a Trident" and they replied surprised "Do you know the type of the plane only by the sound of its engines ???"... well...
Whatever

The loudest plane I ever heard was an F-16 at an airshow to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the South African air force, the noise hit you right to the bone!
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Quoting Buslover (Reply 50):
Most of you are all talking about civilian planes, please don't forget these horribly noisy military planes:

- C5A /ask the people around Frankfurt airport, they are all glad the're gone!)
- ALL fighters (esp. low level flying)

Have to add the C 141. Windows shake when a departing C 141 passes.
