Take Off? Landing? Cruise? What's Your Favourite?

Thu Mar 09, 2006 8:48 pm

Just a question to people who love flying:

Is is the thrust at takeoff that get's you? Or is it crusing at 40 000 feet and admiring the view? Or is it landing (will this be smooth, rough, too fast)?

What is the thing about flying that makes you do it for leisure and not just travelling from A to B?

(my favourite is take-off, hearing those engines spool up and the AWESOME feel as the engines push you back into your seat despite pushing 200 tonnes)

I love the awesome power plastering you to the seat on takeoff, but what I always look foward to is the approach and landing. It starts when the first flap setting is selected. You can feel the lift and drag as they move into place. Then the landing gear come down and the rest of the flaps, creating a greater breaking effect, and a really cool sound of wind rushing by outside.. But the best part is the last few minutes when the pilot flying the plane kills the autopilot and hand-flies the plane all the way down to the runway. You always know the pilot is flying the plane because the plane will become a little "tipsy" (for lack of a better word) on final approach. The moment of anticipation comes as the bird floats in over the runway. I find myself wondering whether the touchdown will be a gentle nudge or a slammer. She floats for a second or two and then BA-BUMP! Spoilers pop up and the reversers kick in. The feeling of being pulled forward during braking is pretty cool. Once you turn off the runway, it's all over. Can't wait to do it again on a later flight.

In short, it's the last few minutes of flight and the landing run that give me that sort of "joygasm" (betcha haven't heard that word before!)

In order to get the maximum enjoyment you MUST have proper window seat:

I just love landings. Coming in with strong turbulence, watching the landscape and faces of other pax (...) and then a nice hard touchdown...
Love it!

Without a doubt, takeoff. Especially on the 777 and 747.

I'm a nervous flyer, and take-offs make me nervous. I don't sweat a lot or mumble to myself, I just sit quietly (nervously) and look out the window. Small bumps make me jittery.

I don't like cruise on short flights because I sit there and start obsessing over stupid things. On longer flights (10+ hours) I sit back and watch movies, or try to get some sleep. It's fun when it's smooth.

Landing is my favorite. Probably because I know we're coming back to terra firma  Wink Also you're low and slow, so the view is GREAT!

On decent when the spoilers are used to slow down and then the subsequent flap deployment comes, along with the inconsisent use of engine thrust to adjust airspeed, followed by the deployment of the landing gear and the quietness that develops in the cabin as we observe the features of the ground come to a closer and clearer view along with the humidity trails rush from the upper part of the wing and the vortices follow us all the way down to a marvelous touch-down followed by the roar of the thrust reversers and a message from the FA's welcoming you to your destination airport.

Take offs are the best for me, its nice in a big lumbering jet, but even more fun in a fully loaded Dash8, on a 1100m runway biggrin  I still love sitting at the end of the runway at Plymouth with the props going full pelt and the brakes on full, as soon as they are released the aircraft leaps forward and accelerates down the runway like nothing else and last time within 11 seconds we were airborne. Such a great feeling, looking forward to my next 'ride' tomorrow morning Wink.

Landings are ok, again I prefer them at PLH - the approaches are almost always bumpy and the landings hard with maximum breaking so that the aircraft can pull off at the Runway 14 intersection. Cruise isn't as fun, but its fantastic to just look out at the world down below and to see that deep deep blue of the sky above.

Take off is my favourite, no doubt. I really like the sound (on a 777 I'd say the MUSIC) of spooling engines and then.... lift off!! Wonderful!  Smile

I agree, Take-off is great, since it's the beginning of your journey, cruising is great for the amazing view of the skies, landing for the view of the landscape and cities.

Depends on the bird.
Take off in the 757, 737, 747 and 777.

Approach in anything that's a widebody or an AF A318!

Oh and also the A320 family out of LHR when ATC clears us to our cruise altitude and the pilots just hit the throttle. Awesome climb-rate. (Same goes for the 757 I guess)

Take-off, cruise and landing have become too familiar for me.
And the "cruise"-part often is too long ...

However, flying in an usual type of airplane makes me happy and of course: Go-around after missed approach !

you certainly said it all too right....i love sitting close to the engines as possible, usually right behind it so i can see the flaps and spoilers move about. take off thrust is so awesome. dunno, but the sound of turbofans is like the sound of the ocean to others...i stayed at a hotel airport and the reverse thrusters was like music to my ears!

My favorite part of the trip is the landing. I just love the feeling of that plane touching the ground, and the sight of all the flaps and spoilers being deployed on the wing. I also love the approach into the airport. However, I do love the feeling of power during takeoff. Cruise is pretty boring, unless going through turbulence. That's always fun.

DeHavilland DHC-7 rules!

For me it is approach and landing.

MLM 42000 lbs, flap 45 set, 5,2 degree glideslope. Short rwy (as in 2400 feet), poor viz, gusty crosswind, poor breakingaction, you know you are depending on the 4 huge props and the beta-range to slow us down.

You gotta love it!

I love every part of flying.....but its definately the landing that cuts the cake. Especially sitting at a window seat just behind the wing so you can see the flaps and spoilers go up. Big grin

Landing...I like to watch the wing and keep saying "flaps....more flaps..more flaps...moooooore flaps...." and then watch us fumble back onto the runway and back into reality. MSP landings in winter = fun.

I like the take off, because of the way it thrusts u into your seat, and I love how the plane gathers speed. BUT I would have to say that the approach into the landing is my ultimate favorite. I ALWAYS have my window seat, usually behind the wing, and I can see it adjusting for landing, I can feel the wheels come out, the plane begins desending from the clouds..then for a moment it seems like your floating on air till you feel those wheels "bump" the road.....I JUST LOVE IT
