Towns Famous For Crashes

I was just thinking about how some places are famous for the fact that they had a signifigant crash there. Some that came to mind are.

The village of Kegworth is now rather well known after the British Midland air disaster in 1989 when this B734 crashed onto the motorway embankment just short of the runway after it had only just previously passed very low indeed over the town.

Arlington, VA and the pentagon. Everytime I pass by I think of those poor victims on AA 77 and those who lost their lives that day.

Überlingen, Germany - the city above which a Tu154 and a 757 collided. One year later the father of a child killed in the Tu154 killed the air traffic controller. A tragedy.

Ramstein - Famous for the desaster of the Frecce Tricolori which killed more than 70 people at an air show in the late 80s.

Pango Pango, Samoa. Pan Am 707 Clipper Radiant
Karachi, Pakistan. Pan Am 747 Clipper Empress of the Seas. (Not a crash but an extremely famous hijacking that took place on the ground)

Roselawn, Indiana

American Eagle 4184 ATR-72 crash on October 31, 1994.

I was living in Champaign, Illinois at the time and I remember being outside in that horrible storm, when I came back inside I turned on the TV and found out about that accident.

When I drive down I-65 (which is rare) and pass Roselawn, I will always think of that crash, infact, I passed there on October 31, 2004, the 10 year anniversary coming back from a wedding.

Also, Sioux City, Iowa forever linked with the UA DC-10.

100% Agree. This is the only really famous place (though not a town) related to an air desaster.

I never heard anybody talking about the "East Moriches Crash", or "Pegy's Cove Crash", or "Sioux City Crash". They talk about "TWA800 Crash" or "Swissair MD-11 Crash", or "United DC10 Crash" ...

On the other, I don't hear often people taking about "KLM/PanAm ground collision" ... most of them talk about " the Tenerife Disaster".

The other Air disaster famous for its location is "The Lockerbie disaster".

I think some of the cities that have been mentioned are famous because the name of the city is what what used to publicly define the event.

I agree with all of those. Those are towns that are defined by the communities they happened it. I can drop those names and everybody will know what crash I am talking about. There is a good point about Tenerife not being a community and it is true that a location doesn't always have to be a city to evoke a memory of a crash....just mention Grand Canyon, Everglades and you think of that DC-6 Connie collision, The L-1011 or Valujet.

I would add one more, Dallas Texas. There have been multiple crashes there but you mention crash and Dallas and everybody pictures that Delta L-1011 tail next to the water tank..

Not really a city, but a district in the city - "North Park" is the section of San Diego where PSA 182 crashed in 1978.

The actual site is long rebuilt, but at the parking lot to the nearby library, a tree has been planted in memory of those who perished, and a plaque was placed at the base of the tree.

The Everglades Crash....

There was actually two. My mind automatically thinks of the older one. (Even though it is not a city as requested by the OP...but still a place that describes a crash rather than the airline involved.)

I will not post the crashes I am thinking of, to see if the theory is correct.

And then there was the Grand Canyon Crash. Another oldie.

Quoting FlySSC (Reply 19):

Definitely fits. I hear it referred to as the "Shanksville Crash" as much as I do UA93. Overtime the flight number use will give way to location on this one.

Here's another one, not a crash, but an event.

The Grand Canyon would have been pretty famous without the midair. I don't think it is the most popular national park because two aircraft ran into eachother over it in the 1950's. I'd be willing to bet that 95% of Americans don't know that event ever took place.

As for the Everglades, the first think I think of when I hear Everglades is a alligator and mosquito infested swamp. If you mention crashes, people will know about Valujet and maybe the L-1011, but those crashes didn't make the Everglades famous.

First of all: definitely Tenerife and Lockerbie are the names that became famous by the disasters.
And in the meanwhile probably Shanksville PA and "the lower Manhattan" or the WTC in NYC due to the 9/11 attacks.
And, at least locally here in The Netherlands, Bijlmer(meer) Amsterdam is connected to the 1992 ElAl 747 freighter that crashed into an apartment building.

Vrbovec, Croatia

On September 10th 1976, a BEA Trident 2E and Inex-Adria DC-9 collided at FL330 over ZAG VOR. 176 fatalities on both aircraft, marking this as post-WW2 Europe's first mid-air collision.

The DC-9s left wing sliced through the nose section of the Trident, which due to instantaneous decompression, literally vaporized. The DC-9 went into an immediate unrecoverable nose dive, while the Trident remained flying for a short while before it slowed down and started diving as well.

The cause was attributed to ATC error, though in light of new evidence, some burden was lifted off the controllers then on duty, due to the general understaffing and illequipment of Zagreb ATC, which was at the time one of the busiest ATC centers in Europe.

I think Munich has to be high on the list, after the 1958 Airspeed Ambassador crash there that wiped out half the famous 'Busby Babes' Manchester United team.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/d...ruary/6/newsid_2535000/2535961.stm

Throughout the football world, this event is remembered, especially as Manchester United are probably the world's 1st or 2nd most popular club team.

Amsterdam B-747 crashes into town after departure
Ueberlingen, Germany: The midair-collision which destroyed trust in ATC
Teneriffe: The worlds most famous crash with the greatest loss of lives
Riad, Saudi Arabia: DC-10 departs Riad and after a while notices smoke in the cabin but doesn't decide to return until it gets really bad. Pilot is able to land but nobody can escape the plane which burnt out.
These are to me the most striking accident of civil aviation without terroristic back-round. Ohh and the Swiss at Halifax.

I'm also astonished that only one person mentioned Ueberlingen. It was such a big topic.
Hope these things won't happen to often again.  pray

To me, (and I'm surprised its not mentioned) Gonesse is famous for the most notorious crash in history. RIP those killed on 25th July 2000.

Also, the town I went to school in, Ashburton in Devon had a Dash 7 crash a few years back.

Yup, that accident occured in November 1983, and just a couple of weeks later (Dec 7th, 1983), an Iberia 727 and an Aviaco DC9 collided on the runway at MAD after the DC9 entered the active runway without clearance while the IB727 was on take off roll. There was thick fog and snow at the moment of the accident and the surface radar was not working...a perfect recipe for disaster if you ask me.

This was the Eastern L-1011 crash. IIRC, he was to be holding at 2000 feet while the crew was troubleshooting a landing gear light indicator. The crew was not paying attention to the flying, and the last words recorded just before impact were, I believe, from the co-pilot: "We're still at 2000 feet, aren't we?"

Didn't movement from one of the pilots cause the control stick to move, disengaging the autopilot?

You are correct. That started a very gradual descent, which the pilots were too preoccupied with the light bulb to notice.

I believe you're thinking of Saudia flt. 163, an L1011. Very tragic indeed; due to the poor response of the crew in dealing with the emergency.
