Routes You Would Not Wanna Fly

Thu Jun 08, 2006 5:43 am

The idea of flying EZE-AKL and SCL-AKL has always somewhat scared me. A long flight mostly over water with the closest piece of land still very far away..

Same goes for HKG-EWR of CO or any other flights over the North Pole.Yet this flight could be interesting in terms of scenery...

Are there any routes you would not wanna fly for some reasons?

I wouldn't want to fly Mogadishu to Bagdad right now.

Land or water doesn't bother as long as it stays in the air. I've done LHR-AKL 3 times now and AKL-HKG return, you get used to it.

Talking of north pole in the northern section of canada (Quebec) 83N there is airport @ Alert YLT only 5500 ft to short to land i think, But YFT Iqaluit got a 8600FT runway that the A380 land to test in cold weather... it is located at 68 degree north

There's no route that I wouldn't want to fly. Anyway, most US transpacific flights returning to the US take a southerly route and are over water most of the time.

SYD-LAX/SFO is over water the entire time as is IAD/ATL/JFK-JNB (Well, when they were nonstop eastward).

Most US transpacific flights to NRT/HKG etc. are all over land. Maybe 2 hours out of the 14 or 16 hrs are over water.

I don't like to fly MCO-ATL on DL but on FL I will. My problem is such a short flight on beautiful a/c i.e... 767-300/400 and even T7's...

Already have flown AKL-EZE-AKL it's a beautiful flight - and virtually no chance of a mid air collision...
I would be wary of any flight into Baghdad currently, but other than that i have no problems.

In december I'll be flying that route purposely to go over the north pole for the first time. I live in HNL so I'll have to head east to EWR, then go west from EWR to HKG. Everyone I know is calling me crazy for doing that, but I don't just love airplanes, I actually love flying  Smile To me, even the 9-10 hour non-stop flights between HNL and EWR, which I've been doing frequently lately, is too short. So yes, I do know CO Mike, and an entire plethora of routes and airlines can get me to HKG more direct, all going westward for the whole itinerary.

Can you elaborate about why flying on short flights on larger a/c is a problem? I think most people would find it to be a nice change from the usual smaller planes such as A32X's, 737's, and 757's.

You sure? I was once on a flight to India that made a stop in Iran. Upon landing, the airport was closed and we were stranded 3 days in Tehran, right after the Shah had left and before the Ayatolla returned from exile. I'd just as soon not put myself in another such position!

Several years ago I booked an ATL-MEX flight and did not look at the a/c. This was back around '99 and when I got to ATL the ticket said to go to C concourse which I thought was odd. When I got to the gate I saw the plane and it was a CRJ-200! The plane had to hug the coast the whole way around Louisiana, Texas and the Mexican coast until it got close enough to MEX to start heading inland. Not only was and is the CRJ's the most uncomfortable a/c afloat today but to prolong the flight by about another hour was miserable. One of the most miserable flights in my time. NO more ATL-MEX on CRJ's!!!

Try 26 hours UK-NZ with a two hour break in Asia - granted at least it's a break but not much of one, I'd sooner do it nonstop and get in 2 hours earlier!

Seriously, it's no biggie, you just sleep, watch TV, eat, just like all my dreams at once but you're on a plane too! The last AKL-MAN flight I did went AKL-SIN-ZRH-MAN, 16 hours on the SIN-ZRH-MAN aircraft without getting off!

I'd be hesitant to fly to some countries, but that is usually more because of safety and security.

I always am a little edgy at takeoff on a long oceanic trip like LAX-AKL, which I've done many times. Also there is something about flying a 737 to Hawaii. But any time I'm on a plane, it is a fun experience.

Quoting Wrighbrothers (Reply 28):

It's actually not that bad at all. Now I have only done it in Raffles (Business) Class, but it is actually nice to be on a plane that long. You can set your own sleep and eating schedule as they serve three meals on that flight. It was a bit weird taking off and flying due north and then coming over Russia, Mongolia, and China.

NRT through CDG to EWR

Leaving from an large and confusing airport to navigate, making a difficult connection via 1 or two shuttle at CDG, and thr landing and getting out of EWR. This would be a terrible route to fly.
