Your Favorite Airport?

Mon Jun 26, 2006 4:27 pm

I have had the pleasure of spotting and hanging out in various airports. Some airports are just amazing for aviation fanatics, with unique spotting locations and a variety of aircraft. Some airports are unique machines in themselves, and the airport design and function is as much fun as the airplanes themselves.

Some of my favorite airports:

LAX- amazing spotting location by the famous In-N-Out Burger, love the AA terminal T4 and the TBIT

YYZ- there used to be a great outdoor elevated viewing deck on the top of the parking garage at the old terminal 1

ORD- busy, interesting, densely packed. Personally like the UA island terminal best of all

SIN- beautiful facility, great A/C, flowers everywhere

Kai Tak- of course, the most amazing approach in commercial aviation history

Chek Lap Kok- voted best airport 2005 with good reason, clean modern design, open spaces, beautiful and functional filled with international widebodies.

Would love to hear of other members' favorite airports and their specific reasons?

Don't have any one favorite but here's a couple based on different things:

Spotting: LAX. Don't forget Imperial Hill besides In-n-Out

Convienence and Ease: ONT. Cheap parking, check-in, arrive at gate in 10 minutes or less most of the time

Facilities: SIN. New, modern, and clean.

Proximity to Destination: SAN. 5 minutes to downtown, Amtrak, and Cruise ship terminal.

Location and Surroundings: HNL. Open air terminals. And Hawaii! Enough said.

Those are my personal favs.

Doin' just fine thanks...

my favorite airports:

* Honolulu, clear, all open, very clean, a lot of facilities for photos mostly in the corners beetween the 3 piers and at the top of inter-island terminal parking where you can spot all the landings.

* San francisco for spotting area at the shuttle aerial terminals. Nice place of the airport and the very short drive to the town.

* Los angeles for the "theme building" for lunch with a wonderful view in the same time on the 4 runways. impossible to miss any landing or take off except for the smoke salmon... and his fresh burgundy white wine...

* Zurich is a very nice place for spotting. The viewing areas are in good places on the terminals roofs and when the weather is nice you spend a nice day.

Almost any medium-sized city's airport. Birmingham and Louisville, for two examples, are very easy to transit.

TPA is a great airport. You can watch the main runways from the parking garage. At least you could prior to 9/11. Not sure if they let you spot from there anymore.

SAN is a fantastic airport being right downtown.

I really like MEX. Yes, I know it's overcrowded and in dire need of replacement or expansion, but I love all the widebodies and foreign flag carriers. I have worked at RNO for 26 years, and although I am grateful for the airport putting a roof over my head for that long period, I just get so sick of all the 737's, A320's and RJ's going to dull regional destinations.

When I go to MEX (my wife is from there) I just feel exhilarated with all the people and the international flights and BIG PLANES! I would even like to work there someday...

Favorite so far to travel through:
MDT - Cleanest, quietest, easiest access airport I've been through

DTW - to get from B32 to A77 is quite a hike, but at least you get to go through the cool tunnel and pass a National Coney Island

CMH - 2 parallel runways with the Gateway Dr. in between = great spotting and numerous close call fender benders

My favorites are some small airports such as...

S43 (Harvey Field, located ~6 miles east of PAE) Great little spot with an amazing restaurant! Short runway of 2600 feet with a width of 36 feet (~11 meters). Takes a lot of skill to get in there.

Bigger Airports are...
SIN (Amazing airport)
SEA (my hometown airport)

My .02.
