Most Surprising Announcements In Av History?

Wed Nov 08, 2006 4:14 am

-I think the Fedex cancellation is up there in the top 100 due to the significance of being the first to boldly do what no other has done yet...

Others:

-Concorde early retirement
-Emirates HUGE A380 order!

Any others???!

I'd say the unveiling of the SR-71 needs to be up there. This airplane is incredibly amazing now.... and it first flew almost 50 years ago.

The FedEx-380F cancellation was not a big surprise, they dont have 747F in the fleet, a big step from their largest freighter MD-11 to 380F so it make sense they´ll go for a smaller a/c like 777F. What´s surprising is that more carriers don´t delete their order for A380....

Crappy managemant iyam!

I don't think that was surprising. Furthermore, just a few months later, Boeing made that number. In essence, they were thrown off by the expectation that the Chinese would sign sooner. That one order is all it took.

Anyhow, how about the B-2 and F-117 unveilings?

How about Air France picking the 777 over the A340?

Some great posts above...

-SR71 by the Lockheed Skunk works is one i would not have thought of...

-Qatar ordering 777 - I agree - that is a shocker. It takes a great plane for an airline to

-NYC - yup - the 911 ordeal could be top of all if considering aviation news!

-Boeing SST cancellation may be as surprising as all the cancellations which accompanied the Concorde also - there were dozens of cancellations once the fuel crisis hit.

Here's another:

- BRANIFF sudden bankruptcy i believe was a shocker in its day

When you've spent so much money on airport upgrades and new maintenance facilities, cancellation is a last resort. However, the A380F seems anemic. Perhaps ditching it in favor of the pax variant, and then doing freighter conversions later would be a wiser choice. Not like UPS would be pissed, they only took the A380Fs to swap out the remaining A300s.

Well, if announcements are event proposals or accomplishments, then I would say these come to mind:

1. Charles Lindbergh saying that he'll fly the Spirit of St. Louis solo across the Atlantic in 1927.

2. The Wright Brothers announcing their first successful flight in 1903.

3. John Glenn announcing he'll pilot the first aircraft to travel faster than the speed of sound in 1947.

4. The first artificial satellite with Sputnik in 1957.

5. The first person to travel in space, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, making one orbit on April 12, 1961.

6. First Nonstop Flight Around The World by Balloon by Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones in 1999.

7. Mike Mellville and the first privately developed, piloted vehicle to reach space in 2004.

By far that is #1 on this thread. Without them, we probably wouldn't even be having this discussion right now.

Qantas huge 787 order was an eye opener.

Eastern closed.

Pan Am bankrupt.

Undertaking of the 747.

Undertaking of the H-4 Hercules (Spruce Goose.)

Jet engine technology.

Charles Lindbergh's Atlantic flight.

The list goes on and on.

*EDIT* Landing on the moon. Probably #2 on the list just below the Wright Brothers.

The announcement that two bicycle mechanics from Dayton, Ohio had finally managed to achieve sustained, controlled heavier-than-air engine-powered flight. Big grin

In a more serious vein... hmm, that's a tough one. So many promising candidates. Initial scuttlebutt about 'Aurora' flying speed in the hypersonic region? (Mach 5+) After all, the question was broad and didn't restrict itself to any particular arena in aviation.

With Aurora, it isn't every day when you get something equivalent of the 367-80 burst on the scene; 367-80 was significantly faster and more cost effective than the props it replaced. I'm not sure about cost effective with Aurora, but definitely significantly faster than the U-2 and SR-71, and represented radically different and new technology.

Oddly enough, I wouldn't put Boeing's 367-80 announcement on this list simply because they weren't the first by any means to announce a jet -- and thus, not a shocking surprise. There's the Germans with their Messerschmitt Me-262, DeHavilland with their Comet, A.V. Roe Company of Canada with their C102 Jetliner, amongst others.

The announcement Airbus was really going to launch the full double decker A380 was pretty amazing as well.

I think the greatest surprise ever was when Howard Hughes sold has airline Hughes Airwest to Republic/Northwest in 1980. He made out like a total bandit, getting 500 mil for the deal, much more than the airline was worth.

Some additional "surprises" in no particular order:

1) DeHavilland Comet crashes in close sequence

2) Cancellation of Concorde orders

3) Third delay for the A380

4) Resignation of Airbus' Schrieff (sp)

5) Bankruptcy of People Express

6) Crash of Concorde

7) Retirement of Concorde

8) Recent reports of plot to take down aircraft flying between UK and US

9) Airbus' announcement that it surpassed Boeing in sales for 2005 (huge)
