Hi All,
I'm extending a business trip in Northern NJ by a few days so that I can explore NYC for the first time (see my thread in non-av from a few days ago).
As part of a convoluted travel plan*, I'm flying into EWR and out of LGA. I'll have my laptop and one medium-sized rolling bag with me.
I know next to nothing about getting around NYC, so I ask my fellow A.netters... What's the best way to get to LGA from Manhattan with luggage? OK to do it on a bus? Better with a cab? Is subway an option?
(If it makes a difference, I haven't chosen a hotel yet, but it looks like it will be either on East 50th (between Lexington and 3rd) or 7th Avenue (between 31st and 33rd))

*- I'm flying into EWR on Tuesday, 28NOV, car service is taking me to the hotel, then on Friday 01DEC, car service is picking me up from place where my meeting is and dropping me off at EWR; I'm planning on taking the Airtrain to Penn Station and finding my way to whatever hotel I end up in. Then on Tuesday 05DEC I fly out of LGA back to CLE.

You can do it by bus, but cab is by far the best option.

Taxi is most definitely the way to go. You can take the subway and connect to a bus to get to the terminal, but it isn't easy or straightforward.

Look for the NYC MTA webpage, there's a bus that runs from LGA to the the subway lines.. (it's either the 4-5-6) I took it twice, wasn't bad pretty good over all, just check the bus schedules to make sure you get the timing right... there were several others with bags on the subway as well....

You can take a cab, but if you are alone, an airport shared ride shuttle would be better. A taxi runs about $25 with tip, a shuttle is $15.

Cab, or bus from Grand Central or (I believe) Penn Station. 50/Lex, GC is only a few blocks south. If cab, tell driver to take Queensborough bridge and not to argue or you're reporting him. It's right there, saves you the toll from Triborough bridge and as fast or faster. 25 min rush hour, 15 off peak. If you stay on 7th Avenue, trip will be 35-45 rush hour, 25 min off, by cab. Ask hotel if there is bus from Penn Station. Have fun.

You can also take a bus which departs from 42nd street, across the street from Grand Central. I've personally never taken it, but I hear that it's about $15. However, if you are not on the budget, you'd be better off taking a cab.

I've always taken the 4,5, or 6 to 125th/Lexington Ave and gotten on the M60 to LGA. Trip costs about $4 one way. Very easy too, unless you're dragging tons of bags. Cheaper than taking a cab or shuttle.

I would definitely take a cab. I took the shuttle bus a few months ago getting from center city to LGA and it was a b*tch to get to LGA... Personally, I think they should just tear that airport down - its such a dump and such a hassle to get to.
But if you have to go, take a cab - the shuttles are just a pain in the a$$ and aren't worth the stress involved.

If you want to take the subway, I'd suggest the N line to the end in Astoria. The bus station (M60?) is right downstairs - just follow the signs. Total time by bus.. about 5 minutes.

There is a bus (Q48) that runs from Main Street in Flushing (the #7) and one (Q33) that runs from the Roosevelt Avenue Station (E, F, G, R, V and #7).

Don't take it to the end (Astoria-Ditmars Blvd) take it to one stop before the end, Astoria Blvd station. That's where you catch the M60. Or take the subway to 125th St and catch the M60 there.
Either way, be warned that the M60 is a regular city bus and does not have luggage racks - it sounds like you're travelling pretty light, but the M60 gets really crowded.
Personally, I always take a cab or car service to LGA.
