Longest A321 Flight

Tue Apr 17, 2007 7:18 pm

I didn't know Novair flew their A321s ARN-LPA-REC!

That has to be the longest A321 flight in the world!

MYT Scandinavia and Novair fly their 199-211-seat A321s between Scandinavia and the Canary islands nonstop many times every week, with block times at 5,5-6 hours. I think that's impressive  thumbsup

I could imagine the BMED's LHR-THR route is amongst the longest ones with a westbound flying time of 6H30 mins. flight is operated with A320 and A321's.

Those are longer. Air Ivoire also has a long flight between ABJ and MRS.

MRS (43°26'12"N 05°12'54"E) ABJ (05°15'41"N 03°55'35"W) 194° (S) 2335 nm
ARN (59°39'07"N 17°55'07"E) LPA (27°55'55"N 15°23'12"W) 230° (SW) 2342 nm
LPA (27°55'55"N 15°23'12"W) REC (08°07'36"S 34°55'23"W) 210° (SW) 2435 nm

LPA-REC seems to be the longest route served nonstop.

BMED only fly the 321 to THR, never the 320.

The longest single sector flights seem to be

LPA-REC 2435nm
LHR-THR 2389nm
ARN-LPA 2342nm

The longest multi-sector

ARN-LPA-REC 4777nm
LHR-TBS-FRU 3244nm
LHR-HBE-ADD 3224nm

It is clear to see that Novair really stretch their 321s

Any more additions?

Mike

Didn't I read about a new service from somewhere in Pakistan (Islamabad perhaps...) to MAN, with a stop at Istanbul?

Istanbul to Manchester, is nothing special, but what about Islamabad to Istanbul?

Yep, MAN-ESB-ISB is another good one to add to the list, had forgotten all about that one!

MAN-ESB 1634nm
ESB-ISB 1953nm

MAN-ESB-ISB 3587nm

According to the Air Ivoire website, some of their ABJ-ORY and vice versa, operate nonstop which is 2621nm.

Another long multi sector is BMED's weekly LHR-BEY-ADD

LHR-BEY 1883nm
BEY-ADD 1497nm

LHR-BEY-ADD 3380nm

Nope, no extra fuel tank for BMED's 321s.

Regards

Mike

I believe BMED's aircraft have an extra fuel tank in the cargo compartment to increase range.

AC's YYT-LHR route is the only Canada-UK A319 route and it's not that far, 2012 naut. mi., scheduled time 5 hrs eastbound, 5:35 westbound. AC has quite a few longer nonstop sectors using the A319, both domestic and international.

BMED do have an ACT in the A321's, which I believe stands for Additional Centre Tank. Guess BMI will be keeping these ones for the longer range BMED routes. BMED have on occasions run a full A320 non stop both ways between LHR-THR when one of the A321's has had a tech problem. This can onlt be done westbound if the winds / Temp are favourable. If they not even the A321's cannot make it non stop sometimes.
I believe a BMED A320 also made it from Bishkek to Stansted non stop many years ago as well.

AC and 5G also operate charters between YYC-VRA on a A321/320..but I am not sure of the distance. It is not as far as some of the routes mentioned previously, but, it is stil quite a distance.

Yes, but the flight was operated by BMED (a BA franchise partner who at the time had been absorbed into the BD group). The aircraft in question was G-MEDL.  Smile

the A320 has much better range than a 321, I know of a 320 that operated LGW-BJL before now, the 321's sometimes struggle to get back from the Canaries to the UK with a bit of wind on the hooter

How is it to travel long-haul (or almost long-haul) in those 320/321?

No PTVs?
No extra legroom?
No proper long haul business class?

Are they like the Privatair or AF Dedicate services where the planes are re-fitted for long-haul or does it just plain suck?

BMED operates 8 A321/A320 of which, 3 have PTVs in World Traveller, one with on demand. So if you're lucky, you do get good entertainment on some flights, although to be honest, we have more problems with the PTV system than we ever have with the standard drop down LCD set-up. All BMED a/c have PTVs in Club.

BMED operate with the older style BA cradle seats. We have in the past, had comments from passengers that our cradle seats are better than BA's old lie flat Club beds. I am 5ft7 and had to scrunch up on my BA club bed, so anything taller than me must have had real problems. I cannot speak for the new club beds, I am sure they must have gone some way to addressing the length issue.

The A321 for longhaul is not ideal, but there are just some markets, for example Bishkek and Khartoum that do not justify anything bigger.

Mike

LAX is(was) served from MBJ so KIN-LAX (+2426nm) might have never happened...

From Norway we frequently have A321 charters from/to;

Oslo - Malmö - Dubai - Goa (Novair) 11h40min
Oslo - Las Palmas - Natal (Novair) 11h45min
Oslo - Tenerife - Banjul (My Travel) 8h05min
Bodø - Las Palmas (Spanair) 6h35min
Harstad/Narvik - Las Palmas (Spanair) 6h45min
Tromsø - Palma - Las Palmas (Spanair) 7h55min
Trondheim - Tenerife (Spanair) 6h

QR for example is using their A320´s to VIE which is westbound 5:40 to 6h and east bound 4:50 to 5:20 and they have a proper J-Class with 12 seats in 2-2 config and 132 y-class and it is quite comftable. There are no PTV´s in eco but....as I said before many times on this forum... let´s read a book or just watch the movie which is shown. The legroom in Eco is fine and I have done the EU Doha route from MUC,ZRH and VIE and trust me I do not see any difference in terms of legroom and legspace. It is not so bad to be on a narrowbody that long.  Smile

Plus with the QR service on board it is even more fantastic!

Air Blue will indeed be using an A321 routed Islamabad-Ankara-Manchester from 1 June, Ankara will only be a technical stopover for refuelling, just for information code "ED" is showing Edelweiss Airways and not Air Blue at this site.

The aircraft is wet-leased from a Turkish airline, I forget which one. Which probably explains the choice of Ankara as the tech stop.
