When Did You Become Interested In Airplanes?

Wed Jun 06, 2007 10:59 am

For me pretty much as long as I can remember. My Dad flew for the airlines. He had a great career. Starting on the DC-6 and retired off the 747SP. I remember fondly going on trips with him and how much fun it was to hang out with airline people. Always facinated with what goes on around airplanes and being in flight.

Got hooked on it recently, total addiction now, no cure at all. I always loved planes, but until about the last year, i started learning my aircraft, learning photography, taking pictures, going to the airport twice a week and so on. I love this hobby, and simply enjoy watching planes.

I have no clue how I got addicted, but I do know that it was when I was 3 years old. I started getting airplane models, and going to the airport, etc. At the age of six I was able to point out what manufacturer of the airplane it was (just the big ones like Cessna, Boeing, Airbus, Piper, etc)

I've been hooked ever since the first time I stepped on an airplane. All I remember was the thrill off lifting off for the first time and I was fascinated at how something that big and that heavy could possibly get in the air.

Needless to say, I'm still fascinated by it.

I don't really know how I got addicted, from a really young age I've always had a thing for things with engines, cars, trains, planes, boats.

Went to my first air show at 9 months old...apparently, I kept bugging my parents after that.... "more plane, more plane." My next air show I was about 18 months old......so, pretty much since infancy!!

Mine came just recently. However my fascination with airplanes has been around since I was very young. My grandparents used to live in Richfield, MN. They lived almost right off the highway (I think it's 77 possibly but I can't remember) and probably less than 10 miles from MSP. I used to love watching and listening to them fly over us. Sadly, the airport bought out where they lived and are currrently building a Target in place of where their house used to be  Sad

I can't remember -I was so young that time.

The house I grew up in was just underneath the approach to rwy. 19 at FBU in Oslo, and family and friends are telling me that I used tho corrctly identify airplanes by their sounds when I was inside the house : "That was a DC-6, ..a DC-3, ...a Metropolitan" etc.

Then of course it was he influence from my father who worked at SAS when I was a kid.

During my childhood. We lived in a district near Geneva airport. I used to watch all take-offs and landings from the classroom of my school. I always wondered why the other childrens never were interested as I was.

Where I grew up was on the Western flight path for BHM, so I got to see airplanes come and go all day long as a child.

We had a large number of F-4s stationed here during the Vietnam war, so it was really cool to see them streak by overhead and then feel the sonic boom a few seconds later.  cloudnine

I went to airshows as a kid, but mostly what was featured at these local shows were military aircraft, which were interesting in a "technological achievement" kind of way, but not anything I had a burning desire to find out more about. I always wanted to check out the civil aircraft that were parked nearby but weren't part of the show.

Then in November 2003 I took my first flights on jet aircraft (Delta MD-80s), and from the initial exhilarating moments of take-off I wanted to find out all I could about commercial aircraft...and to experience them as often as possible!

After my first ever flight, when I was 8. It was from CLE to CVG on a DL MD80 (enroute to SAN). I was captivated ever since.

Since as a child when I took the first flight I can remember moving to the city I live until today in 1991 on a Varig 767 on GIG-BSB. By that time in BSB, there was a terrace where we could see the airplanes very closely, and my father used to travel very frequently so I always asked my mom for us to pick him up and go a bit earlier so I could go to the terrace and see the airplanes (my mother is great!). BSB nowadays is pretty boring, dozens of A320 and 737s, but by that time we saw fewer planes but MD-11s, DC-10s, 747s, 767s, that was really great. Since then I love airplanes.

Possibly, I don't remember exactly, when I flew for first time in my life in an Iberia McDonnell Douglas DC-10 to cross the Atlantic.

About 1981... 4 years old.

Gerard

My Dad has been an aeromodeller all his life, so I was interested in airplanes when I was just a twinkle in his eyes towards Mom.

I've always had a thing for airplanes... I can remember being in London when I was very young and my aunt lived on the flight path to LHR... Every day at that special time, the windows of her flat would rattle, then it would get violent and suddenly, Concorde would pop up above the tree line and as soon as she had dissapeared from view, we would run out to the roof garden just in time for her to re-appear from over the roof.  biggrin
