Favourite/Least Favourite Lounges

Tue Aug 07, 2007 7:50 pm

I don't know if there is already a thread on this topic but here goes:

I never understand why so many airport lounges around the world have no windows or look at into a parking lot or something. You are at an airport and it is great to sit in a lounge with a fantastic view of the airplanes and the runways. It boggles the mind.

So, here are a list of my favourite (for overall airport views) and least favourites (no windows - hello claustrophobia!)

Great Views:
- Sala VIP at Madrid (old terminal). Great view and nice sleeper chairs next to the windows. I purposely check in early so I can spend some quality time here.

- KLM Schiphol lounge (ex-Schengen). Great views over the terminals and the aircraft. The Schengen KLM lounge is nice and spacious, but no direct view over the airport - you can see it from further back though.

- Air France lounge LHR: nice view of the runway

- Delta Crown Room JFK: the one atop the main terminal. Great overview of the international terminal.

- Lufthansa Senator Lounge FRA: nice view of passing aircraft (pretty close) and of runway.

- Alitalia Lounge - Turin

- Skyteam Lounge - CUN

Horrible ones (unfortunately the list is longer):

- Alitalia - Milan Linate - just horrible

- Air France/KLM - LIS

- TAP Portugal - LIS

- Air France EZE

- Alitalia Catania

- A number of lounges at Tom Bradley International LAX

- International lounge (AF/AZ use) at MIA

Have you been in the new IB lounges at MAD T4, great views in a much nicer environment..........

BTW, do you know who's currently using the old IB lounge at MAD T1?

Agree 100%

Also horribles are IB lounges at BCN and VLC.

OW lounge at CCS is very nice,

Alitalia Catania

agreed. However, the "normal" waiting loungel was even worse. When I was there (summer 2005), a new terminal was under construction and should be finished now (?)

For AF lounges :
I like  bouncy   champagne  : CDG-S3 (brand new), YUL, JFK, HKG, BKK, ORD, IAD, ATL (DL business premier lounge on concourse E). They just opened a new lounge at NRT. I didn't see it yet but it's supposed to be very nice.
horrible lounges  vomit   yell   hissyfit  : BOS (Term E, no windows, in a basement), BLQ (airport lounge but that was a while ago, it may have changed), SGN (VN lounge used by AF), LAX (NW lounge at T2 used by AF), EDI (servisair lounge used by AF)

I don't think the London Lounge (Air Canada/SAS) at LHR T3 is all that bad - you get some decent views over some of the gate area and taxiways.

The SQ lounge in Singpore was surprisingly bad. There are no sleeper seats just hard ones, and there are no windows at all. I get so restless after an hour or so. (Business lounge, haven't been in first lounge).

Also, the lounges in Perth do not have windows.

Favorite: BA lounge at LHR (I think they call it the Terrace lounge or something along those lines.

Least favorite: United lounge at LAX terminal 2 I believe.

Skyteam Lounge - CUN

This lounge is good, although by the windows there is a large roof which blocks a view of the runway just from sitting down

Just my $0.02 (CDN).

Cheers,

Here in BOS:

Great lounges: Delta Crown Rooms (terminal A)

Ok lounges: AA Admirals Club (B), UA Red Carpet Club (C), CO Presidents Club (C), BA First Lounge (E)

Horrible lounges: AF F/J lounges(E) , BA Terraces J lounge (E), NW World Club (E) [probably the worst lounge i have ever been in], LH F/J lounges (E)

Out of the lounges I have been to so far, the SQ First Class Lounge in SIN was a huge disappointment... The only good part were the showers.....

The good -

BA Terraces at Heathrow with the Molton Brown Travel Spa is one of the best there is.

QF Qantas Club in Sydney domestic is a hell of a good lounge too.

AA Admirals Club in Miami is superb, so is the joint AA/QF lounge at LAX in Terminal 4.

CX in Hong Kong is also excellent.

The bad -

Just about any "third party" lounge is not so good. The one RJ use in Terminal 3 at LHR is crap... outdated decor, no free internet and just generally poor. The one used in VIE for oneworld was also pretty bad, as is the J lounge AY use in AMS.

The worst - the BA Concorde and F lounge at LHR T4. Dated, tatty and going to seed. Obviously not going to spend any more money there until they move to T5 (funny, I was thinking the same thing)

The Business louges IMHO are much better and usually less crowded.

The F lounge in T1 seems quite new and much better than the one in T4.
