Your Longest N/s Flight In Economy

Sun Sep 30, 2007 11:50 pm

Hi everybody,

I wonder what your longest non-stop flight in basic economy (no E+/deluxe) was (or will be). And how did you cope with it?

My longest Y class flight was on CX SFO-HKG in 2000. The winds were not in my favor. It was 14+ hours. And I did not cope very well. We took off around midnight and I could not sleep for the entire flight  Sad Fortunately, I had an empty seat next to me.

Longest flight in Y is FRA-LAX for 12hrs.

It was really bad especially without PTVs.

On my way to Bahrain, NTU-SNN-NSY-BAH. I was on a Ryan International 757. I was 33C (atleast not middle) but the most uncomfortable flight I hav e EVER been on. BTW, the layovers were only for 40 minutes. Just enough time to refuel and cater. HArdly enough time to streatch your legs in the gate area.

I fly between South Africa and Europe regularly which is 10-11 hours but the worst was QF SYD-JNB in October 2001... 14 hours plus, daylight flight, no PTV/AVOA.... it was one of my worst flights ever.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Due a mistake of my travel agency, I flown in 2003 a MAD-EZE flight with Aerolineas Argentinas in economy.

After 13 hours of flight, my legs and my kidneys were destroyed and my trip job in Argentina was spent sleeping during two days.

The positive action of this flight were that the travel agent who made the mistake, is, nowadays, my wife. As a compensation of this mistake, she invited me to drink something...

Today, and after three months to be married, we are very happy and she is the only person that has all my confidence to prepare my job trips.

Regards,

Gerard

15 hours SIN - CPH (via BKK) on SAS in August 2005. The extra stop-over in BKK that SAS had on this flight (they no longer continue to SIN) adds two extra hours to the flight compared to SQ's direct SIN - CPH route. This is a LONG time to sit in Y, and with no leg rest my feet felt like jello by the time I arrived in CPH. On subsequent trips to Asia, I've always gone for the SQ option. The flight is non-stop, they have a leg rest, they serve better food, they have better IFE, and the staff is nicer. The only aspect of the flight which I don't like is the flight schedule when flying from Europe. The flight departs CPH around 11:30 am and lands at 6 am next day in Singapore. This is pure torture as one arrives in Singapore at the time one would normally sleep (11 pm CET) while local time in Singapore is morning. I've suffered severe jet lag after this flight.

My longest was CDG-PHL on US Airways. Due to a reaccommodation, my flight across to Paris was on Continental in BusinessFirst. However, CO was a 757 and US was an A330. The two really off-set each other well:
- BusinessFirst is BusinessFirst
- But the 757's BusinessFirst cabin is VERY small. One aisle and three rows of seats. Not much room to stretch out.
- The A330 is much bigger / wider
- Both have AVOD in the classes I flew
- I had several friends on the A330 flight
- Since the A330 was westbound, I didn't have a frustrating attempt to sleep and just stayed up and enjoyed the IFE.
- The A330 was also my first widebody flight in general so that was exciting.
- I had an aisle seat on the A330.

All in all it turned out rather well. I really liked that flight, but I'm not sure how it would have been in the other direction or with a window seat! Well, I do know that if I had the window seat on my CDG-PHL leg, my IFE would not have worked!

PHL-MAN with a diversion into Gander because of medical reasons.

14 hours on a US 330... the service was fine, but the fact i was stuck in a metal tube for 14 hours sucked. Never, ever again.

2 Years later, exact same plane, it happened again.... In Dublin.

If you're flying with me, make sure it's not on N671UW! (well, it's N671AY now.. but still!)

PVG-JFK on a China Eastern A340-600. The winds were not in our favor, so flight time was 16 1/2 hours. Not as bad as I thought it would be-- but still a long time to be on a plane!

HKG-LGW with OASIS.
In fact it was not such a "hell" !
The flight was overnight and i was able to be at least "half asleep" most of the time. Considering the amount of money i spend (ow 159,-EUR / 220,-US$ all incl.) the flight was all in all more than good value for money. Nothing to complain except for the very limited legroom (albeit no serious problem as i could stretch out to the side - i had an aisle seat - )
Flying is not inherently dangerous but it is very unforgiving in case of carelessness, incapacity or neglect.

The longest for me in Y would be MSP-SFO and that isn't all that long. However in March I will be doing DTW-FRA in Y and that is around 8 1/2 hours. I drive from Detroit to St. Louis every now and then and that is a 9 hour drive. I usually only make one stop so I think I can handle that long of time in a plane. As long as I have an aisle or a window I'm good.

LAX - CDG on Air France in Tempo ( Economy ). The service and amenities were great, however, I sat next to this 7 year old girl flying with her family to Tel Aviv via Paris. I had worked a full day from 9h00am until 18h00p and still wearing my suit and tie to the airport for a 21h55p departure for Paris. I was exhausted. She did not know how to use her PTV, how to set up her own children's meal tray ( Planete Bleu kit ). Her parents were sitting in JKL with her little brother. I was in E - aisle and she was in F - middle and G - her mother moved to J. I had to inflate her inflatable cushion ( provided by AF ), set up her meal tray, etc etc etc. After consuming wine, cognac, and tea, I placed my eyeshades over my eyes to sleep yet she was still asking me questions. I was all smiles and very patient and friendly. ( But I really wanted some vodka and straight-razors at this point ) Her parents finally told her to let me sleep. I arrived in Paris so exhausted, but at least my friends waiting for me threw a huge party so thankfully I was revived by the nice surprise!

I think I have this sign over my head that says ' I'm all ears ' or something.  Yeah sure

Ryan International

That says it all right there, one of the worst flights I ever had was on them. Ryan International factors into my answer as well.

ATL-LAS on two separate occasions. AirTran in both cases, the first flight was on an A320 operated by Ryan International, the other an FL 737. My return flights on those trips were via DFW, which with the two legs (LAS-DFW and DFW-ATL) combined, they were slightly longer flights than the non-stop.

ATH-JFK many times, with TWA. The flight was often 12+ hours with strong winds, and one time we were delayed 2 hours and they made us sit on the plane the whole time. That was about 15 hours gate to gate because JFK didn't have a spot for us with the delay.

Not fun.

Congratulations - I'm glad you had a happy ending!  Smile

My longest by distance is HKG-LGW on Oasis, very bumpy flight, but cost me less than £80 for the return portion, so I'm not really in a position to complain!

The longest by time was HKG-CDG on an AF 777-200ER, a very strong headwind all the way put the flight time at just under 14 hours... not nice, didn't leave my seat once either, and then I had a further hour flight to BHX on the 146-200... then worst of all I had a FULL day of university lectures, having flown over 6000 miles the night before. Never again!

AC 001 (YYZ-NRT) twice, AC 002 (NRT-YYZ) three times. These flights are roughly 13 hours long. How did I cope? Drinking, reading, watching movies from a personal DVD player or IFE.

SIN-FRA on SQ back in 1992 (flight ot SIN was routing FRA-BKK-SIN).
I was much younger and less overweight back then, so while having been stressfull for my long legs, I do not recall any serious problems (or is this due to Alzheimer's disease ... Big grin ).

Btw, I no longer fly such long sectors in Y.

SYD-LAX, 12 hours, followed by LAX-DUB, another 12 hours.

It's a long way to Europe, especially when you go the long way (instead of through Asia, which is only 13 + 9 in the air!)
I do enjoy a spot of flying, especially when it's not in economy!

My longest that I remember was HNL-HKG. I think that leg was around 12 hours, but I may be mistaken. What I do remember was how tired I was when I finally arrived in Perth, Australia. I flew HNL-HGK-SIN-PER with out getting out of an airport and seeing a bed. But this weekend I'm flying ORD-DEL, and my ticket says that's a 14 hour 55 minutes flight. The return is supposed to be 15 hours and 40 minutes. And that is after a 2 hour and 10 minute flight DFW-ORD, and layover and plane change. I'm thinking I'll be ready to get off that plane.

SYD-SFO return in December 06/January 07 with our, at that time, 2 months old son. Worst experience ever with old/tired 744 both ways packed to capacity in coach, broken movie projector so was starring at green/purple picture the entire time (had bulkhead seats) and to top if off, a miserable crew. Promised myself never to fly UA again after that experience but at least our son was really good and slept well.

Off on another long trip in economy with the family on Thursday to visit relatives in Germany. Flying MH BNE-KUL-FRA but with 18 hours stopover in KUL and MH paying for a room in the Pan Pacific Hotel. Will try to post a trip report if I survive this trip.

Cheers,

Peter

14.5 hours LAX-SYD

Yes, did that, on QF, departing on Sept 10, 2001. All Y, overhead screen, no PTY.

On BA: LGW-MCO. Had this british environmental consultant as neighbour, off to USA to teach them about saving their environment. I just wished she'd talk to herself more....

on LH:
-FRA-NRT and back - miserable for no PTV. Duration about 12 hours?
-FRA-LAX and back - still have a stiff neck from craning to see overhead screen. Return in J, but old recliners, screens smaller than CX in Y. LH: the UA of Europe??

Apart from that:
NG1 VIE-SYD five times, the last four with our son (4mth, 12mth, 16mth, 28mth) mostly in Y, twice in J.
Return trips on NG1 (OS1) and on SQ BNE-SIN-FRA twice. Never got to use the fabled Kirsflyer.
OS: VIE-IAD and back on several occasions.

More recently on CX:
HKG-SVO and back (actually codeshare on SU) - ca. 10 hours
FRA-HKG 12 hours

And to come, also on CX:
HKG-CDG and back - prob. 12-13 hours.

And yes, all in Y.....

My longest non-stop flight in Y was on LH A 343 between MUC and LAX. It was scheduled to be slightly over 12 hours but due to strong headwinds we had to make an unscheduled refueling stop at LAS (which included a go-around). So in total I spent around 15 hours on the plane. Thankfully I was at the exit row, sitting next to a very nice Turkish guy and across a Turkish F/A  Smile

Even though around 900 nm shorter, I had a flight between HKG and IST which lasted 12 hrs 30 minutes on a TK A 343. This time, I had 2 seats for myself and managed to sleep for a6 hours for the first time in my life  Smile

Hi!

My longest flights was back to the 16th. December 2003 when I had the chance to fly for the first and so far the last time in an MD11. The flight was ZRH to LAX with SWISS, the plane's registration was HB-IWM and it lasted 12:45 minutes. I remember well that flight...me and my family were heading to Fresno to spend 1 year studying and our youngest son was quite active...you can imagine him staying 12:45 minutes on a plane...but he did great, he used to walk around the plane lot's of times, and because SWISS had some eating stuff in a corner of the plane our son was always coming with is mouth full of "something"...normally swiss chocolats!!! Normally our flight shouldn't last that long but we had strong headwinds mostly from North America on until we landed, we also had a last minute runway change due to a huge storm over LAX, for the first time I landed from the Pacific Ocean and we also had the most heaviest touch I've ever had, but those SWISS pilots were good!!! To pay my respect to that memorable flight here's a picture of our plane:

Lots of long flights in economy.

UA SYD-LAX 13 HOURS 1998 (return trip was in business class)
QF SYD-LAX 13 HOURS 2002
QF SYD-AKL 12 HOURS 2002
SQ SIN-LHR 14 HOURS 2005 done after BNE-SIN
SQ AMS-SIN 12 HOURS 2005 followed by SIN-BNE
MH KUL-LHR 13 HOURS 2006 done after BNE-KUL
MH AMS-KUL 12 HOURS 2006 followed by KUL-BNE

My last 2 trips to Europe Nov 2005 and Nov 2006 have been all in economy. Trips have been 10 day trips but 2 of those days is just flying. Nice that SQ and MH had PTVs. Its basically a day flying from Australia to Europe.

CO14? I took that flight over the summer. At least its a redeye and shorter than CO15 on the outbound. The F/A's on mine were great and didn't mind us being up and about. I couldn't sleep, but htat was due to my seatmate. I managed to stay up until about 10 PM EST once I got home, I slept for 14 hours.

My longest flight was CO91 TLV-EWR. I was in the middle seat of the left side and sick. Pretty umpleasant.

Mine is FRA to MEX. The pure flight time was 13:50 but in addition we had a 1:50 slot at FRA plus it took 25minutes before we reached the gate at MEX. Total was almost 16h on the LH B 747-400.  cry

SYD-SFO with QF on a 747SP 1987? and then just last March LAX-TPE on a CI 744. The worst long distance flight in coach was AA's ZRH-DFW back in August 2004, nothing wrong with the plane, just the service.

in terms of distance 10,894 km, 11:45 h LHR-SIN
in terms of flight time.13h 00, 10,736 km, SIN-CDG

EZE-AKL at 10,324 km/12:41h also comes very close for both criteria as well.

SIN - LHR is still the longest I have flown, and I've flown it many times with QF, BA, and SQ (my choice today being SQ and NOT via LHR to get to Norway)

You people ! What part of the word "non-stop" don't you understand ? A multi-leg flight is not non-stop, it is direct. Tsk tsk.

My longest nonstop flight in Y was

19Apr93 SA202 South African Airways B747-400 ZS-SAV JFK-JNB 14 hours 30 minutes, 7984 miles

Longest direct flight in Y was

10Apr93 SA203 South African Airways B747-400 ZS-SAV JNB-CPT-MIA 15 hours 30 minutes, 8461 miles

My longest would be BKK-LHR in a QF B744. It was pretty ok though. The IFE was not that bad, food was good, FA's were pleasant to lay eyes upon, and I also got some sleep  Smile

I read "N/s" in the thread title as being non-smoking.  Wink LOL
