Can You Still Remember Your Very First Flight?

Thu Nov 15, 2007 4:22 pm

June 20th 1981, an early (cold) Saturday morning, A300 DUR to JNB. My parents and little 12 yr old me went to visit my aunt for the weekend. I will never forget that day, it's stuck in my mind! I still remember how excited I was and how I counted the days before the flight!

I think my first flight was on one of the MD-80s Northwest had for a shot period of time after the Republic merger. It was to go to my step-grandfather's funeral in Florida. Thats as far back as I remember other than being told of a trip in a Cessna my mom and dad took a few months before she gave birth to me. I've been flying pretty much my entire life so my first flight must have been either the MD80 or one before my memory was able to function lol.

don't remember the precise date, but it was BEG to LHR around 1970 - No idea what aircraft I was on, but one of my very earliest memories is the silhouette of a Caravelle against the sunset.... and a plane junkie was born.

Sure I can !
Summer 1991, Air Inter, Marseille-Paris Orly. I was 5, almost 6.

Although I don't know the aircraft type I flew on, I remember it was a narrowbody so it must've been an A320 or even a Mercure. I made a drawing for the flight attendant and she took me for a tour of the cockpit! Later during the flight I saw Jesus through the window.

EA DC-9
BOS-LGA (first leg on a family trip to DAB to visit my grandparents)

I was 6 at the time. I do remember the lighted FASTEN SEAT BELT / NO SMOKING signs located along the aisle ceiling. After arriving at DAB, I do remember my ears aching from the flight.

No.

Mom tells me we flew to Arkansas from California right after my sister was born (in 1971). I have no memory of that (at age five).

The first trip I remember was the only flight I had as a child - December, 1974 and January, 1975 - BFL-LAX (UA 727-100), LAX-DFW (AA 727 - brand new DFW, too!!), and DFW-FSM (Frontier CV-580), returning FSM-FYV-JPL-MCI (Frontier CV-580 - and a brand new MCI as well!!), MCI-LAX (TWA 707 - talk about elegant!!), and LAX-BFL (737-200). Eight years old and I knew all the planes from the picture books I had!!

I remember going on that flight not too long after Air Florida had that 732 crash into the Potomac and being afraid that we were going to crash into an icy river! But then again I was only 7 yrs old at the time. I also recollect how noisy it was before we departed EWR since PE did not use or have jetways at the old North Terminal.

My first flight in a private plane was a Piper Super Cub at OSH where I joined the Young Eagles.

Oh yes...can remember it well!

Out bound ROA to CHO on a Piedmont Martin 404 March 2, 1968. Landed twice before we got to CHO!

Return that same weekend was on a Piedmont 727. Originated in LGA, stop in CHO, then continued on to ROA and then not sure after that.

Amazing going out on the old prop job and coming back on the jet. WHAT A RUSH!

I cant remeber the exact date but it was sometime in the summer of 1985-86 in India. I was 12-13 yrs old.

I flew a 737 classic from Aurangabad to Bombay on Indian Airlines. Aurangabad at the time was a very small airport with, maybe, 4 or 5 flights operating a day. (Dont know if the airport has been expanded, though I am quite sure the traffic frequency has increased many-folds).

I remember walking across the tarmac, under the nose, to get to the stairs. I also remember asking my dad to hold me so I could touch the black nose (the security cops were amused) .... I was always a plane junkie. The other thing I remember from that flight is the steep climb during take-off... i held on tight to the armrests since it was not something i had expected. I also vaguely remember that the horizon looked purplish/brownish while we are at cruising altitude. Also remember loking down at the Sahyadri's and being amazed at how clearly you could see the "crack and fissures" in the mountains. Also remember that there was a gentleman sitting across the aisle from me and he worked on some papers through the whole flight... i was amazed how someone could be so blase about a wonderful experience such as flying. The approach into Bombay was special as I could recognize many of the locations on the ground (Vashi, Thane Creek, Eastern Express Hwy, Ghatkopar, etc). (BTW, the approach into BOM is still very special... whenever i fly into India, once I see those sights I get that feeling of "I am home" even though home for all practical purposes is the US).

My second flight after that was when I left India to come to the US as a grad student at the age of 21.

Little did I know then that I would soon be flying every week (I am management consultant now ...and do the Monday fly out and Thursday fly back routine every week out of ORD). Though I must admit I am still thrilled about flying and am usually stuck to the window during take off and landing. The wonder of it all never ceases to amaze me.  veryhappy

I was only nine years old when I flew as an unaccompanied minor from Idleweild (JFK) to San Francisco (SFO) to visit my grandfather for the summer. The aircraft was TWA's Super Connie. When it got dark outside I told the "stewardess" that I thought the plane was on fire because it was spouting flames from the engines. She told me not to worry, because it was only engine exhaust and, unlike cars, planes did not have mufflers. I do remember that we made a pit stop in Kansas City. I don't know if SFO was coded like that in 1955, and I have no idea what the Kansas City code was at that time. In any case, I had a great trip.

In 1977 AMS-FAO on Transavia Boeing 707 (probably PH-TVA). Just about a month after the Tenerife disaster and right before we went airborne, the pilot aborted take off. I remember my father saying there was probably an aircraft coming from right, a joke that my mother not really appreciated at that time. After a seven hour delay at Schipholdue to technical problems, we arrived savely in Faro.

It might sound strange, but my first flight was just 6 years ago, when I was almost 27. It was my first trip abroad Russia as well. Thus, I remember it really well.

It occurred on 22nd of December, 2001, SVO to CDG on SU's A310. We were flying together with my French ex-girlfriend to celebrate Christmas and New Year at her home in small town near Paris.

I still remember that stunning feeling of taking off into air.

I was 3 years and 2 months old when my family migrated to Australia from the Netherlands on April 19th 1965. I don't remember much of the flight at all but I do remember some very bad turbulence that upset a lot of people. My parents tell me that I was terrified because of the engine noise. KLM DC-8.

My daughter made her first flight at the age of 2 years and 8 months and fell asleep as we taxied to the runway and remained asleep the entire first sector from SYD to AKL on a Qantas 767-300, and only woke by the click of her seat belt when I removed it. She does remember the A340 of Air Tahiti Nui though, " I been on the Blue plane to Aberkerkey" ABQ.
I so want to fly on SCAT one day!

Hi!

Yes I remember pretty well that flight. It was on the 23rd. November 1979, I flew on a MDDouglas DC-9-51 from Swissair, SR691 from LIS to GVA. The day was beautiful all way to GVA, but I arrived already by night there. I also remember that we parked in one of those 3 "mushrooms" the airport had ( and still have infact...) and I remember seeing a LOT TU-134 parked there too.

Remember my first flight? Barely. It was ORD-MSP on NW in 1972.

August 2005 on a monarch A320 from MAN to PMI. I was 14 at the time, it was the flight that got me into aviation.
