Turbulence; Do You Hate It Or Like It?

Fri Dec 07, 2007 2:14 pm

Hi!!

The headline says it all; Do you like turbulence or hate it??

Myself I really like it. For every flight I take I always wish for turbulence.

I do like turbulent for short time, and not for a whole flight or several hours.

How about you??

Not crazy about it, I gotta be honest. I'm a nervous flyer anyway, and tubulence doesn't help...

I really like it! Of course, not rally severe, I wouldn´t like to bounce in the ceiling, but a bit of movement with a tight seat belt is fine.

Indifferent to it as a passenger. Annoyed by it if I'm working out in the aisles especially if I'm holding a pot of coffee. Annoyed by it if I am at the controls in the cessna I do my flight training on because it restricts what I can practice and that flight time is not cheap.
Enough about flying lets talk about me!

I don't think anyone enjoys turbulence. It can be quite scary at times. I was on a flight from BOS to MIA last summer when we hit very strong turbulence around the Carolinas. As an x-F/A I was trying to calm the passengers around me. The looks on their faces were of pure terror. The Capt. came on the intercom and said "F/A please be seated" and that scared most of the passengers. I had to tell them that it was because of safety reasons. We came out of it in like 10 minutes.
Obsessed is just a word the lazy use to describe the dedicated.

Depends really, when I'm on a tiny prop flying through large cloud heads and the aircraft is being tossed to kingdom come, then I don't particularly like it, however the odd bump and buffet on a larger aircraft isn't something which bothers me and I find it pretty fun. BUT, when that happens for say an entire 12 hour flight then it becomes bloody annoying very quickly; this summer passed I had it both ways from LGW-HKG, it was a darn nuisance when trying to sleep!

I like a bit of turbulence, when on a big jet it makes you realise how strong mother nature is and when I fly in turbulence in the traumahawk its fun, almost like a challenge.

Hate it, for the most part. I can put up with some light stuff but when it starts getting moderate and severe, I can't stand it. It's hard to imagine sometimes how the pilot has decent control of the plane when he's banking and the wings are fluctuating left and right and the nose is tilting harshly up and down. And when people start vomitting, just get me off the damn plane.

I am pretty susceptible to motion sickness, so no. I've never actually thrown up during a flight, but when the flight I was on last fall went through some turbulence during the approach to EWR shortly after mealtime I felt very close to that point.  ill

I like it, or should I say I like it up to a certain extent. I wouldn't like it if it was bad enough that I'd have to utilize the ol' barf bag.  wink
But turbulence does make a flight more interesting to me, especially when its minor turbulence and a few passengers (think inexperienced travelers and kids) still are practically freaking out.

I don't mind turbulence, but I honestly hate it when it's for the majority of the flight. I'm a bit of a nervous flyer so turbulence does seem to get me jumping a little bit and not in a good way.

I generally don't like it because we have to stay seated and in-flight services often get disrupted. However, I've never been scared of turbulence, just annoyed. And only once did I get nauseated (but I didn't throw up) on approach to DEN, when the turbulence was more of a dropping/swaying motion than a bumpy/grindy motion.

I don't mind it like the rest of you, but not for a prolonged period of time. We were coming beck form Hawaii earlier this year and it lasted for about 45 minutes and it was light to moderate chop. It got tiring and people were getting a bit nervous over the bumpy ride. Another flight were I experienced turbulence was coming from JFK to DTW on the great Pan Am and we hit an air pocket which sent people into the air and there was drinks and any thing else not tied down all over the place. That was the worst I can remember.

I fail to understand why anyone would like turbulence. What is it about turbulence that those who like it enjoy? Do you like having drinks spilled in your lap and sometimes meal/beverage service has to be suspended or not even offered on short flights due to turbulence. Do the same people who like turbulence look for bumpy roads full of potholes rather than a nice smooth highway when they're driving their cars?

Perfectly agree.

Good statement, I also agree. One thing is a moderate chopping that in a way can break the routine of a 12hrs flight or the little bumpy that is normal in the final approaches and another is a severe turbulence that can make the aircraft drop for some 2000 feet in 10 seconds (like once had happened to me on a MXP-LHR flight right over the Swiss Alps) with everyone around you screaming and throwing up...

I honestly prefer a smooth and uneventful flight.

Do you like the feeling that the pilot has little control of the aircraft? Do you like a chain reaction of vomitting throughout the cabin? Do you like it when I open my water bottle to take a sip and instead dump the whole thing on you and your lap? (ATL-RIC, July 2004) Do you like chaos? ...............

The difference with turbulence is that it's sudden, you don't know when it's going to happen, and you're tens of thousands of feet in the air, you can't just stop an airplane ride. When people start vomitting, the plane keeps going.

Unexpected severe turbulence has also killed a fair number of people over the years. One example:

Love it unless I'm in the aisle with the bar cart. The other day I was non-reving on a Saab340 and we hit a good 5 minutes of constant up and down and I absolutely loved it, reminded me of a rollercoaster. When I'm working, it never gets old standing in the back galley holding on to handles or something watching the plane rock left and right and all the pax swaying in unison  Smile

You're right. I'm one of the "love it" dudes too. The worst I ever experienced was a ANA F50 flight from NGO to NRT with some 15 minutes of really bumpy ride. People screaming, utilizing the barf-bags heavily...Couldn't keep my hands with the newspaper level... But I've never seen beverage carts hitting the ceiling.

As a matter of fact, I love a fast ride on a dirt road. Best would be to have a RWD car, so I could do some power-slide as well.

Have you been on a lot of planes with people vomiting? Ive only seen it once in my 300,000 miles of flying. And it was only 2 people. It was kind of funny (in a sick way), the woman reached for the bag and as she opened it we hit a huge bump and the bag flew out of her hand. She threw up on her lap.

Quoting AlexPorter (Reply 14):

My sentiments exactly. I dont get scared and I dont feel sick, but its damn annoying. I remember a flight I took from LAX-ATL on DL to see my girlfriend at the time and for about 2 hours it was light to moderate chop. No one got sick or scared, but I had to piss like a drunk and I couldnt get up. That was just annoying.

Definately. I live within 30 minutes of both Six Flags Magic Mountain and Disney Land. I can go there if im looking for a huge roller coaster ride. As for plane rides, I just want to get there as fast and as smoothly as possible.

I love a few minutes of turbulence, I find it kinda fun. I do agree that it can be annoying if it comes around meal/drink time though. Takeoff and landing seem to be the best time, that way it's not in the middle of a service and most people are safely seated. On a recent flight YYZ-YVR, we hit some decent turbulence maybe around Alberta ish, I found it rather fun untill I saw a senior f/a dive into a passenger seat and then start screaming at a younger one to get a seat anywhere and sit down, which made me wonder a little about his safety. She had a good point though, as it came out of nowhere and some of those drops were probably enough to hurt something if you were up and walking around. Pretty quickly though everyone had their belts on and after that I had about 5-10 minutes of fun and then it was over again.

No, not a lot... But I have been on a few. I'd say 6-7 times I have had the displeasure of seeing and/or hearing someone vomit. The most recent incident occured last June. We flew ATL-MBJ. A girl sitting two rows behind me vomitted every time we hit a single bump. I think she must have also been ill at the time because the turbulence was light. Anyway, about every 20 minutes I had the displeasure of hearing this girl vomit the liquid in her stomach into the bag. It was so loud. You could hear the *gurgle-gurgle-gurgle* noise throughout the entire cabin.

And then I was on another flight where my seatmate vomitted ATL-RIC. There was little turbulence but she was an excellent vomitter. You could hardly even hear her and I didn't even notice she had the bag to her mouth until I turned around from the window. Still, it filled me with disgust to see someone vomit when there was no help until we got to our destination. That really annoys me...

Ive probably been on more flights where that has happend, but ive only seen or heard it once.

For what its worth, I cant imagine that anyone feels any different than you do when they see someone throw up on a plane. Still, its relatively rare. I have a friend who is a FA for US based in CLT and he told me that he only sees it about once every two months or so. Maybe hes just lucky.

i like it. Flying is fun no matter what, but just an uneventful smooth flight can get a little boring at times. I especially like:

-strong crosswind landings/takeoffs

-unexpected clear air turbulence

-turbulence associated with thunderstorms

-go arounds

- +Gs and -Gs in turbulence

I like looking at other people's faces in bad turbulence, i think its funny. I like it when the captain/FO tells the FAs to take their seats (usually means bad turbulence is about to happen)

Although ive never experienced turbulence where stuff falls out of the overhead bins, im sure i will eventually, it should be interesting.

Nowadays, i'm indifferent to it, i don't "like it" but when it's accompanying a 130 mile an hour tail wind that's going to get me to my destination an hour ahead of schedule, i smile.

I used to hate it, but, spending three days sailing in the Atlantic in the wake of a hurricane and in 40 foot swells that nearly capsized the ex-carnival cruise ship i was on, made me realize that there's something alot worse out there than air turbulence, so, now, when i fly through turbulence, i just think of those three days and two hours of turbulence doesn't bother me.
Yes, I'd like to see airbus go under so Boeing can have their customers!

People who enjoy roller coasters enjoy turbulence.

Yup, true! I am of them! As long as it doesn't get bad as this:

Quote:
A Philippine Airlines (PAL) Airbus 340 aircraft en route from the USA to Manila struck a patch of turbulence on 29 October that caused injury to some 15 passengers.

About 45 minutes before the flight was due to land the aircraft suddenly lost altitude and sent some of the 227 passengers onboard crashing into overhead baggage bins and the ceiling of the aircraft, according to The Associated Press. Many passengers had not been wearing their seat belts at the time.

When the aircraft landed at least 15 passengers, including several children and elderly people, were transported to a clinic at the Manila airport for treatment. Some people were suffering injuries to their head, neck, feet and arms while other passengers also complained of dizziness following the turbulence.

Now that's like roller coaster falling out of its tracks and I don't like that.

Personally, I hate turbulence.
Quite bumpy on the NAT's on Monday night. CZQX had a SIGMET of a Gulfstream encountering severe turbulence around 35W resulting in the loss of 2000 feet!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 11):
I have had severe on a few flights

Unless people hit the ceiling, it's not severe. In 4500 hrs of flying, I've never encountered it once.

Quoting Brilondon (Reply 15):
we hit an air pocket

Ah, the classic journo quote! There's no such thing as an air pocket!!
