2008 "Aviation" New Year Resolutions

Mon Dec 31, 2007 8:19 pm

2007 finally leaved us. For me, it was a tough year in general.

Unlike last year, I will emphasize on COST in 2008 (due to some personal commitments which require a lof of $$$). I managed to achieve 5 out of 12 resolutions I targeted in 2007, which I have mixed feelings about it.

For 2008, I have set 11 'aviation' resolutions, which are:

  • To break my record of flying on 53 sectors (achieved in 2007) and 44,751 miles (also achieved in 2007).
  • To perform at least one return long haul journey.
  • To fly at least one sector a month.
  • To pursue flying in F for the first time.
  • To maintain my MH's Silver Enrich membership while keeping a healthy activities in my KLM's Flying Blue and Emirates' Skywards accounts.
  • To involve in a special aviation related event (such as an inaugural flight).
  • To only fly MH for domestic flights in Malaysia.
  • To only fly Batavia for domestic flights in Indonesia. Sriwijaya and Garuda as substitutes if Batavia is sold out with priority to Sriwijaya.
  • To fly the best airline which provide 'value for money' for international sector.
  • To visit at least one new country.
  • And last but not least, to get a DSLR so that I can snap more beautiful photographs.

Happy New Year 2008 to all.  wave

As for myself, 2007 was very rough. For starters, I ended my stint with Atlantic Southeast (ramp rat in ATL) back in February to pursue bigger and better things. I've since enrolled in college full time and am pursuing a BA for now. Back in August of '06, I started my PPL, which finally completed this year in May. That was probably my biggest achievement which I am very proud of.

For 2008 I would like to complete my instrument add on and move on to my twin by this time next year.
Enroll in the OBAP program (look it up for those that don't know what it is)
Become a senior captain at the virtual airline I am now a part of
Finally take that Parisian vacation that i've been promissing my girlfriend

Tha'ts about it for me as far as aviation goes.
What gets measured gets done.

A bit lofty of a resolution, but I really want to see Europe! For that, I need a fricking job in order to pay for it!!!

That would mean my first transatlantic flight, and likely my first time ever on a widebody aircraft!!!

Fly on an airline other than Delta or AirTran.
Take a flight in a warbird.
Take a glider flight.

To not fly Southwest Airlines at all.
Possibly take a flight on a widebody.
Walk through JetBlue's new Terminal 5.

My 2008 aviation resolution is to finally get my private pilots license.

In 2008, I'd also like to spend a few days in SXM watching the 757s land 5 feet over my head while swimming. And also to travel as much as possible.

If you're from Ireland aren't you already in Europe?

I suspect he's one of those Americans who claims to be Irish, but has never even been to the country. If you don't have an Irish passport, then you're not Irish!
I couldn't count the number of times an American has told me they're Irish, and when asked where from I get the standard "..well, my great-great-grandfathers sisters 2nd cousin was from Sligo...." Take note: That doesn't make you Irish!!!

Mine is either to visit a new country or revisit one I've already been to by flying a different route and/or carrier. If I go back to India this year, I would like to take KLM out of DFW when they start their new service, and fly KLM MD11 AMS-DEL.

Aviation wise, mine is a continuation of last years, when I set myself this challenge every year, for the next ten years:

To fly on ten 'new' airlines
On ten 'new' aircraft
On ten 'new' routes

Last year I managed 18 new airlines, 17 new aircraft and 34 new routes, so hopefully things will be just as rosy this year. I also added that I must travel though at least five new countries each year, which I just managed; visiting Syria, Jordan, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Portugal and the Philippines for the first time during 2007.

My goal for the year is to make a higher level of elite status on Delta. I've been Silver now for about 3 years...I'm hoping to have Silver locked up by May/June and make Gold or possibly Platinum this year.

My resolution is to stop hating an airline for just being an airline.
To realize that people like different airlines for different reasons.
To stop saying I "will never fly" or "I hope to see an airline fail" because of the name on their tail.
To realize that employees depend on paychecks from said "hated" airlines to feed their families.
To enjoy this forum for what it is - a place to network, blend ideas, stategize, and simply have fun.

I resolve...

To solo on my birthday this October!

Less important and much less likely, I'd like to fly in a warbird, fly an aerobatic aircraft, and fly inverted, but who wouldn't?

My 'resolution' is to try to find a way to get one last flight on one of QX's Q200s.
Some chance of that happening.  Sad

You could always come to CLE and fly on an "ex"-QX Q200  wink  (most, if not all of QX's Q200s are going to C5, based out of CLE)

Try to make CO Onepass Elite (if not that, fly Skyteam as much as possible)
Above all, I want to earn my Private Pilot's License.

A few flights to my in Spain my usual route is STN - AGP perhaps visit the aeroplane museum at AGP. Possibly find the flight times of departures at GIB and find a spotting location. If there is airshow at FAB this year go to that.

2007 will be a tough year to beat:

- Flew to all possible continents (first time in a single calendar year)
- Flew 10 new carriers (El Al, Avianca, Southwest, Comair (DL), CSA Czech, Air Baltic, ANA, American
Connection, FlyBe, Tyrolean)
- Flew in my first hot-air balloon
- Flew my first Boeing winglet narrowbodies
- Got tier status with all 3 alliances (LH Senator, SA)">DL Gold Medallion, AAdvantage Gold)

Next year I want to:

- Fly SA new business class
- Get AAdvantage Platinum
- Fly on an A340-500
- Fly more Russian aircraft
- Visit Russia
- Visit India
- Visit China proper (not HK or Taiwan)
- Upgrade to longhaul First Class for points

ANA was good - upper deck on a 744 from FRA to NRT. Food was a bit odd, although the sushi component was excellent. Service was exquisite though.

Southwest was fun to have done, just to have done it.

1. Maintain at least Silver with NW
2. Fly Midwest Airlines a little more
3. If and when/where possible, try a trip on Alaska Air
4. Maintain avoiding O'Hare for changing planes when possible
5. Keep avoiding AA(ten years plus now)
6. Maintain or better the 68 segments over 2007.
