UAL And Thier IFE

Mon Jan 07, 2008 4:59 am

Hey guys this is my sec. post and im gunna be flying international for the first time soon. I love UA and checked out thier int. on the 777 and the ptv's are really small. All other carriers have bigger ones. Didn't know how old and if they are looking at upgrading this. i know its not a real big deal just woundering. and how is thier service on long hual flights compared to other carries?

UA is adding larger personal LCD displays with their new First and Business Class seating, but Economy remains unchanged.

UA has Channel 9. 'Nuff said, IFE-wise.

Actually, I haven't flown on a UA 777 recently, but I remember flying on one back in 1996 or '97, so the PTV systems are at least that old, assuming they haven't upgraded them.

I think it depends on how long you're flying for; you say you'll be travelling on their 777s, in which the IFE is probably comparable to most transatlantic carriers. If your itinerary is on one of hte 744s, then it is definitely not up to snuff compared to the european, south pacific, or some asian carriers, but that is simply my opinion.

In my last 7 flights on UA, channel 9 has never been on. Which was sad since we seemed to have some really interesting dialog coming over the PA on our decent into Sydney recently: "ladies and gentlemen, please make sure your seatbelts are fastened and tray tables down for takeoff".  Smile

UA does need to upgrade their IFE on the 744 in all classes but in Y on the 763 and 772 is compareable

Most of the time if you ask a F/A during pre-flight to ask the captain if he will turn on ch. 9, 95% of the time he will but some just refuse to turn it on

UA's international service is fine - nothing fancy but consistent with other US carriers. Not sure where you're headed, but on the Asian flights alcohol is still free.

The PTVs aren't the greatest, but better than no PTV of course. They're not AVOD, so you can't control when movies start or stop. But as others have mentioned, better than the big screen.

I'd look into Economy Plus if I were you. Lots of times it's only $100 or so, and for a long-haul flight that extra legroom is hard to beat.

I second that - it's really quite generous. I forgo PTVs and good IFE for legroom anyday! And if you're premier/prem exec, you can choose Y+ automatically

I cannot recall the last UA flight I was on out of LHR and returning, when they did NOT have CH9 on, my last flights being to ORD over Christmas.

Not really true. The 777 will receive larger Y in seat screens to accommodate the new system. This is the only change to the PTV's in any aircraft in Y during the change.

Is that only true to the 777? The new 767 that's flying around kept the same size screens in Y.

I find Ch 9 is turned on at least 3 out of every 4 flights, and when I've asked to have it turned on, it always has been.

Are the PTVs on UA non-adjustable in Y? It looks like that in the photos... isn't it a problem when the person in front fully reclines?

Hey thanks for all your replies! I'm heading to iraq and will be flying KLM/NW there for the company, but when I come home on vaca I get to fly on whoever I choose. Yes i love the chan. 9 and only one out of many many UA flights its been turned off. I've flown econ plus before and loved it. I've only flew first class once on a delta 732. And now i have the money to be able to fly biz or first(witch is a treat) and can't wait. I checked and its between LH and UA on some flights but when I fly on UA it will be a 777...so the ticket said
