How To Build The World's Lowest Cost Airline?

Sun Mar 30, 2008 10:05 am

OK, we've all heard the myths, legends and facts around airlines taking seemingly tiny steps to save BIG bucks. Probably the most famous of which is former American Airlines president Robert Crandall eliminating the olive on top of first class salads. Others include:

airplane  American not painting its aircraft.
airplane  Air Canada only using three slices of red pepper in business class meals instead of four saves them over US$500,000 per year.
airplane  British Airways investing in research on lighter pillows, blankets and magazines.
airplane  Unassigned seating means it's quicker to board an aircraft.

Come on! There must be thousands more and don't let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Simple - Take Ryanair. Eliminate all meals, pillows, travel agents, etc...

Yeah but surely there are a few tricks that even Ryan air haven't tried. I mean, they still paint their aircraft! That's not taking "low cost" seriously enough  Wink

There's still a long way to go before all the alliances deserve a star...

Having passengers pull the shades when leaving the plane to keep the heat out and lower the AC costs. AA does this for at least six months out of the year at DFW (and probably other airports!) - US should definitely look into that at PHX and LAS!!

Some FA's do ask on US. I ALWAYS hear FA's asking to put the blinds down in PHX on WN.
