Launch Customers?

Tue Apr 01, 2008 11:45 am

Ok I know that Delta was the Launch Customer of the MD-11 and I think the MD-90 and if I am not mistaken the 767-200. But what airlines were launch customers for other type of aircraft. That is all the aircraft we can think of.

I believe American was the launch customer for the Dc 10.
Pan Am was the launch customer for the 747, Lufthansa for the 747 freighters as well as the 747-8I.
ANA was the launch customer for the 787.
Lufthansa was also the launch customer for the 737, A310 and A340. There was also thread a few months ago, where every launch customer of every -100. -200 etc model was listed.
It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

Swissair was the launch customer for the 747-300.

Crossair was the LC for the Saab 340.

And, believe it or not, Crossair was also the LC for the EMB-170 and EMB-190 though they never received the aircraft.

Good guesses FlySSC.

You confused launch customer with inagural flight with the DC-8

Northeast was the launch customer for the 727-200 series. Delta did not fly the 727 until after they bought out NE in 1972-73. Delta did own the 500, 1000 and 1500 built 727 however. They were a very late player in the 727 but did become the biggest 727 operator at one time.

American was the launch customer for the Convair 990 . The papers were signed in August 1958. Swissair did not get into the game until October 1960 when their order was placed.

You were correct on the 757. I forgot that and saw the inagural flight pushback.

Cheers

Quoting Columba (Reply 1):
I believe American was the launch customer for the Dc 10.

Yes it was. It introduced the type in 1971.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 8):
Did they receive it in 1996 or 1998?

They received it in 1998. In 1996, there was no NG737.

All other B737 variants were launched by:

100: Lufthansa
200: United
300: US Air and Southwest
400: Piedmont
500: Southwest
600: SAS as LH4116 mentions
700: Southwest
800: I don't know
900: I don't know. I know it is KLM, Korean Air, Continental or Alaska, definitely one of these four airlines.

Launch customers of other Boeings:
247: United
314 Flying Boat: Pan Am
377 Stratocruiser: probably Pan Am
707: Pan Am
727: Eastern and United
747-100: Pan Am
747-SP: Pan Am
747-200: I'm not sure, probably KLM
747-300: Swissair as ANTIX87 mentions
747-400: Northwest as PhilSquares mentions
747-400F: Cargolux
747-8: Lufthansa
747-8F: Cargolux and Nippon Cargo
B757-200: Eastern and British Airways
B757-300: Condor
B767-200: United
B767-300: Japan Airlines
B767-300ER: American
B767-400ER: Delta
B777: United
B787 Dreamliner: ANA as Columba mentions
DC-9: Delta
MD-80: Swissair
MD-11: the poster mentions Delta on his thread, but I think it's Finnair. It is true however that Delta was an early customer of the MD-11. He is right about the MD-90, that I do remember Delta launched it.

Like FLYSSC says, Air France was the launch customer for the Caravelle, and both the A300 and A320 aircraft.
The A310 was launched simultaneously by Swissair and Lufthansa.

A380: Emirates. However, it was Singapore that took the first delivery a few months ago.
Dassault Mercure: Air Inter. It was always the sole operator of the type.

All Russian aircraft: Aeroflot. It's normal, before the collapse of the communist regime, there was only one airline in Soviet Union: Aeroflot. Until Sukhoi unveiled its RRJ, Russia's two newest aircraft were the TU-204 and the IL-96-300, they were both launched by Aeroflot just before the collapse of the Soviet Union. And Aeroflot ended up not taking delivery of any TU-204! I don't think any other airline in the Russian Federation ever launched an aircraft type.

Fokker 100: Swissair and US Air.

The L-1049 Constellation was launched by TWA and the L-1011 was launched by both TWA and Eastern. I don't know who launched the L-188 Electra.

It is a civilian C-130. I think you're right about Delta. I've only seen Delta's widget livery applied on a L-100 aircraft.

Excellent. I pulled it out of my a^&^ but you got me on the first flight. Grabbing my 880/990 proctor book I see this.

American Airlines was the Launch customer in August 1958 but Swissair Flew first it unoffocialy 24 Feb 1962 but the official inagural by Swissair is 09 MAR 1962 Zurich to Cairo, Karachi, Calcutta, Bangkok, Hong Kong, then Tokyo.

American First Flight was 18 MAR 1962.

Too cool. Not to many get by me. I would have bet money it was AA for the first flight.. Swiss beat them almost by a month..Good job.

That's not correct. Pan Am ordered 25 DC-8s in mid-October 1955, followed by UA with an order for 30 about two weeks later. DL was only the 9th carrier to order the DC-8. The first DC-8 delivery went to UA on June 3, 1959. DL's first delivery was July 21, 1959. However DL was the first carrier to put the DC-8 into service, but only by 2 hours. DL and UA inaugurated DC-8 service the same day, September 18, 1959. Due to the time difference DL was first with a flight from JFK (then IDL) to ATL at 9.20 am. UA's first flight departed SFO for IDL at 8.30 am (11.30 NYC time).

Since all Boeing aircraft launched by LH came out as a success in the end (747 freighter, 737) I really hope the 747-8I will follow their predecessors.

This thread mostly refers to Boeing and Douglas build aircraft but how about all the Bombardiers, ATRS, Embraers etc....
Most if not all Soviet build aircraft have been launched by SU and I believe they were also the launch customer of the Superjet.
