Chicago To Denver, AA Or F9?

Fri Apr 04, 2008 6:55 pm

Hello all you great folks here on A.net. I'm flying from Chicago to Denver in August and I have two options. AA from ORD or F9 from MDW. They're both pretty much the same price so it's down to airport hassle (delays, getting there) and equipment flown. MDW vs ORD and A319 vs MD80.
Any suggestions?

Am loyal AA person, but have used F9 with no probs and good service. MDW is smaller and quieter, especially now with ATA gone. Both airports have a Chicago EL -subway stop.

F9 is all economy but they have Direct TV at every seat for $ and bob food. AA two cabin choices. And bob food also.

There is no choice, F9 is far superior.
MDW is smaller and easier to get to from downtown Chicago. In my opinion the A319 is much quieter and more comfortable than the MD-80. F9 also has personal TV's with direct TV at every seat. F9's seat pitch is 33in. compared to AA's economy seat pitch of 32in. on the MD-80. Food is offered on both flights.

Personally, I'm a fan of the MD-80 if I'm traveling by myself, as I'm a big fan of the 2-seat side and thus do not need to climb over 2 people to get to the aisle. In general, I'll book an MD-80 over pretty much any plane (IFE isn't a big deal on a 2-2.5 hour flight as a newspaper and my laptop are more than sufficient, and as for food, I'll bring food on as I'm not a big fan of BoB - rather get something at the airport before boarding.

I prefer Frontier. My experiences with them have always been more friendly and positive. Plus they have better coffee.

I vote Frontier! Havent been on F9 or AA yet... But I guess F9 has the better service! But when I think about it: the MD80 is fun, and the A319 is boring Big grin

I'm usually pro-mainline, but on this one I'd have to agree with F9! Far superior and personal service, and DirecTV service is very nice (though a few dollars, I believe, for service).

So, to recap,

Service: F9>AA
Aircraft: AA>F9 (2-3 instead of 3-3)
Airport: MDW>ORD

The only question is, will F9 still be around in late August?

I'd take one of UA's widebody flights between Denver and Chicago. Widebody over narrowbody whenever possible.

Agreed.. depending on the time of the year, it's not to hard to find a 3-class (international configuration) 777 or 767 on this route.

Agree 100%. If something goes wrong, you have the capacity and frequency. The UA terminal at ORD is far superior. UA's planes are nicer. And of course, Channel 9.

Stick with AA, I don't trust F9 to be around after filing bankruptcy. they don't have the cash or assets (which total less than $100 million) that the big boys (NW, AA, UA, US, DL etc) do.

In terms of service, aircraft, and airport I'd take Frontier. However, Frontier is in Ch 11 and a lot of things can happen between now and August.

For peace of mind I'd take AA - they will be around in August.

LOL...How is this even a question...F9 easily..Considering the MD-80 fleet for AA is shaky and a little uncertain if it will fly from one day to the next...F9
