My dad flew Air UK mainline JER-STN on a 146 and hated it, but then he's never had the greatest luck when flying

Oh yes. specifically Air UK Leisure on a 737-400 which was very new aircraft in those days. Good quality aircraft like and service which any charter airline of today would choke if they had to give you what UKL gave us 20 years ago!!!

Good man, sounds like we were seperated at birth, good memories back then Ba737 eh? Charter airlines were great back then and so many to choose from now we like have two or three in the whole Uk charter sector, sad, very sad.

Not sure about that, but maybe the better , bigger meal service, extra touches, hot towels, sweets etc andf that holiday atmosphere helped a lot in taking your mind off the tight seating, now we just have the tight seating but none of the extras.

And the higher prices?

Seriously, if you want your meals, hot towels and boiled sweets, pop into Lidl on the way to the airport, and buy them yourself. At the same time, I'll cram my 6ft4 frame into 28 inches of legroom, fly off to Corfu, content that I've paid just £130 for the whole holiday.

It's not just the charter airlines that have cut back, it's the whole industry. Times have changed, get over it.

Yep...I flew on them from STN-FRA on a 146. They had amazing add-on fares which could be combined with MH international flights to Europe. It was only 50 pounds if I remember rightly.

I flew with Air UK Leisure in 1990 NCL-AGP-NCL on a B737-400. I was quite excited as a kid as it was a very new aircraft type back then and I had only flown on -200s before. The aircraft was G-UKLA, their first B734, which was wearing partial Malaysian Airlines livery. Unusually, it was parked on the domestic side of the terminal at NCL when we boarded, on the stand which was normally only occupied by BA. It was parked between a BA B732 and a BY B732. Little, irrelevant details, but these are some of the things I never forget from when I was a kid. I'm sure Orion737 can understand! I also visited the flightdeck on this flight.

When we departed AGP two weeks later, I can remember seeing a Minerve MD80, TEA Basle B733, Aeromaritime B733 & Luxair B732 among the aircraft on adjacent stands. As we boarded up the rear steps, Dan Air B727-100 G-BAEF taxied behind us, which was due to depart for STN. I had been speaking to two enthusiasts in the terminal who were on this flight. Before we taxied out, a Princess Air BAe 146 and EAS B727-200 arrived.

Happy days!!

I also flew Leisure International MAN-MCO-MAN in 1995. See my Trip Report on it here: https://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/trip_reports/read.main/66165

Edit: I think I also saw an Air UK Leisure aircraft as early as about 1988(ish). It was a B737-200 at MME, which positioned out empty as I recall.

That would be Air UK. Good fare though  Smile

Air UK Leisure was the charter subsidiary of Air UK which I beleive was later sold to Unijet. Unijet was taken over by First Choice and Leisure International (which was the later name of the airline, previously only used for the transatlantic operation) was absorbed into Air 2000 in 1999.

I've got an A3 size print of a pic I took of LEI's 767-300 G-UKLH pushing back on its first revenue flight from MAN, but my scanner can only do up to A4  hissyfit .

I'll see if I can dig out the original size pic.

UK Leisure's designator was UKL, whilst the long haul Leisure International was LEI.

Only rode on them once, on the jumpseat down to TFS.

They did me a huge favour by being full on the way home....I ended up jumpseating the Translift DC8-71...Heaven !  cloudnine

They did not have a base at NCL, so it was only the odd flight that you had the chance to be flying on your holidays from the Northeast with LEI. My Dad flew from LGW to TFS with them in mid 90's and said they were fine, just bog standard charter. Its a shame that they were absorbed into AMM, but I hear they were not operating very well the season or so before hand and it was on the cards for a while. I do remember they had a landing incident at IBZ with one of the A320's not long before the merger.

I prefered the Air UK Leisure brand and never flew Leisure International, which was the name adopted to short haul once the 320s moved in and replaced the already new 734s!

They did do NCL-Orlando with the 767s and I think Mahon-Newcastle-Mahon on a friday. Can't remember other NCL flights though. Possibly Croatia?

We flew Air UK Leisure once, on a package holiday to Mallorca when I was in my teens. I think it was my first ever visit to STN. We used to fly Air UK (normal) every year NWI - JER on holiday before that.

I flew Air UK leisure HEL-LHR-HEL sometime in early 1990's. That time it was common to make a package holiday WEEK in London, I used those holiday charters several times. Those days about everything was less expensive there than in Finland...  Smile Rather different now.
It was my first time on B737, don't remember much about the flights, dark blue interiors?

Looking back through my logs my only Air UK Leisure flight's were G-UKLD 23rd June 1993 MAN-INN then INN-MAN 30th June 1993 unfortunately same aircraft, don't you just hate it when that happens? It was my 1st experience of charter flights! From what I remember the flight & service were ok but as it was only my 2nd round trip jet flight I was still enjoying everything connected with flying. The main thing I remember was the approach into INN(who doesn't?) & then the heat as we went down the steps!
Looking at the log MAN has changed, back then it had Britannia B737's, Caledonian L1011's & B757's, Excaliber A320's, Airtours MD80's, Inter European Airways B757, Manx Airlines SH360 & Loganair J41's & ATP's!! Talk about going down memory lane!!
