Best Value You Have Ever Gotten On A Fare?

Thu Apr 10, 2008 6:18 am

Not necessarily the lowest you ever have gotten on a PUBLISHED fare, but what is the best value you have gotten on a particular route that you have paid for, including taxes and/or fees? This being in terms of savings from the "typical" price.

In February, I bought tickets nonstop LAX-LHR on AF in November for $335 r/t. Only one day passed before the fare went up to the high 500s.

That's for sure not bad! Don't see that very often...

Well, I am usually non- reving, so I don't book my tickets then and it's cheaper as well... So I am out  Wink

For me - Free considering I travel on my father's expense, however I would probably say that the best fare for us is a mileage ticket, as my father hates to travel on any other airline but SQ and he is also willing to pay a full fare ticket if he has to. Promotions to Delhi are few if any therefore we only buy those 2 to go tickets which can still be nearly double of what other airlines offer at that time

Edit: I should actually change that, my best value for money fare would be nearly 2000US$ per ticket per person on the inaugural flight for the Airbus 380 from Singapore - Sydney and back again after just a 18 hour stopover.

Even today people say how crazy I am to spend nearly so much money to go to Sydney and only stay there for 18 hours. Guess some will never understand our hobby

Excluding mileage tickets, right  Wink

£97 LGW-DUB-LGW in BA Euro Traveller bought six hours before I flew out.
£220 LHR-BCN-AGP-BCN-LHR in BA Club Europe/IB Business Class
$225 RIC-IAD-LAX-OAK-LAX-SFO-IAD-RIC on United in Economy Plus. Nice mileage run!

My parents flew LHR-JFK on AA in First Class for £400 each one way eighteen months ago. Mistake fare on Expedia that was honoured. They flew back to LHR on Singapore Airlines/Lufthansa using miles.

The best value I got was on Delta. My family was late booking for our trip to South Carolina and back, so the only seats left on the return trip were in First. Because it was late, we got them for around $300, or whatever the coach price was.

Yes it's a great shame, I feel for all those A.nutters and other people who have booked on them - quite a few of my friends returning to HK for the summer holidays are now wondering what on Earth to do!

My best value was also on them; £198.30 for LGW-HKG-LGW all in, with a special half price student offer last summer. Another great fare was LHR-BCN-MAH with BA and Air Nostrum, booked just a few days before departure two summers ago for £45 one way, normally it would have been treble that so close to departure.

In 2001 $A1450 all in SYD-KIX-MXP-open jaw-CDG-NRT-SYD depart SYD 26/12 (very high season) booked on 7/12. Best alternative fare at the time was about $A2300. All sectors on JL except for KIX-MXP which was an AZ operated code share.

10GBP on Bmi-Baby MAN-LHR. Incl taxes.
EUR13 Muenster-GVA incl taxes.

USD1100 Moscow - St. Petersburg on the Grand Express overnight train. Shared with a work colleague in their best cabin with single bunk above a double bed. He was much bigger, so I got upstairs. Price included own bathroom with robes, slippers, shower stall, toilet, sink, sat TV, room service hot breakfast, starched linens, wardrobe, keycard entry to the compartment, individual reading lights, etc. Compared with two airfares Moscow-LED, taxi to/from airports, time wasted during the day in traffic, and savings in hotel accommodation (end of summer in St Petes was still very expensive), it suddenly looks like good value.

LHR-JFK £99 rtn on Air-India, in March 2000.

I've done many cheap rtns on Air Transat from LHR to YYZ, cheapest was last year, £202 rtn inc tax.

Actually my next trip, end of this month, is a bargain: LHR-LAX on AF, LAX-SFO on AA, SFO-PDX on AS, PDX-atl-LHR on DL. £412 inc tax on Wikipedia.

LHR-JFK on Concorde, ticket inc view of the curvature of the earth, view of the shadow of night vs day, 1350mph cruise, all in for just under £4000. That was the best value I've ever had from an airline.

I doubt anyone will be able to match our friend Adriaticus. What a lucky b*stard!!!  bigthumbsup

About 14 years ago, in mid 1994 (the now seemingly early days of internet), while browsing in sabre, I bumped into a JFK-LHR-JFK AF flight on the Concorde for US$433. I couldn't believe my eyes, so I picked up the phone and reserved two seats, and then rushed to the office ticket to purchase right away.

The AF ticket office personnel were puzzled, checked with supervisors, made phone calls, shrugged, and issued the paper tickets at $433 each (they were probably valued at around US$9,500 at the time).

A few months later, I traveled from MEX to NYC to take the flight, spending $388 on each r/t MEXEWR ticket on CO for my then-girlfriend and I. We stayed for a couple of nights at a friend's house, and finally took s train to JFK. I had been wondering for months whether AF would honour our tickets or not - but man, that ride in the train was the longest thing ever..

Once at JFK, very puzzled AF employees not only did honour our tickets, but had us seat in 3A&B, which had a great view; the Earth's curvature is clear and the sky is black as he__ at 60,000 Ft and Mach 2.0!

Definitely, the best experience US$433 have ever bought me, and probably, ever will... The passenger receipts, together with photographs, are in an album. I can't wait to show them to my grandchildren one day!

Last Year I flew MIA-ZRH-JNB and return in discounted Business Class special fare on the A332 and the A343.

I paid .....(drumroll)....... USD$ 3,150

Checking the reguralr price, its usually around USD$ 6,000!

Excellent bargain that I bought just 10 days prior to departure one of LX's many last minute specials.

At this time Thai gave this bargain fares to Airline agents.

Great service on all sectors, Thai Airways knows how to make a happy passanger.

Best value for me is Ryanair, no question. You might have to pay extra for this and that but getting to almost anywhere in Europe for a few Euros can't be beat.

Best value I've ever seen advertised was with AC recently, $1088 for unlimited (yes, unlimited) travel between YVR and HKG between April 14 and June 18. The price includes advance seat selection and all taxes, fees and surcharges. The only restriction is that you can only fly on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

It had to have been PDX-PEN on SQ for $1379 round trip per person.

This covered 4 segments and three flights...

PDX-SFO on UA (code share).

SFO-SIN via HKG (SQ1)

SIN-PEN-a 1 hour flight on a 777 (!).

Best value I've ever gotten for a fare was for the roughly DM1200 (or roughly EUR600) youth fare that I bought for my first trip to South Africa in 1994.

When I got to the check-in counter here in Frankfurt, I was welcomed with the words "You've been upgraded to Business Class"... Big grin

Then again, my trip to China in 2001 wasn't bad either: I think the HAJ-CPH-PEK return cost us something around €400-€500, but we got upgraded in both directions (and on the way back, it was 4 of us that got upgraded). Big grin Big grin Big grin

Got YHZ-YVR-YHZ for $59/rt with Sunwing the first summer they were doing the intra-Canada flights. Taxes in it came to $246 but from one side of the country to the other it was unbeatable. Inflight service was top notch too!

I just booked ORD-MSP-MCI-MSP-ORD for a weekend trip in August on NW, $110 a ticket. Four DC-9's and less than $30 a flight. Not eye popping, but still a good deal. Once I heard the merger news, I jumped at the chance to get on the Diesel 9's and NW one last time. Hoping for some '67 builds!  Smile

Back when the Star Alliance began in late 1997 they had a special here in Norway where if you flew with all the alliance members within a certain time period you were entitled to 2 round-trip tickets for two segments with each of the carriers.

OSL-DUS SK
DUS-EWR LH
LGA-DCA UA
IAD-YYZ AC
YYZ-ZUR AC
ZUR-AMS TG
AMS-OSL SK

I believe that whole itinerary cost me about $1200 which is cheap considering all the traveling my wife and I did in 1998.

Hmm, it has to be this one - LHR - ORD - FSD - DEN - LAX - JFK - LAX - ORD - LHR for a total of £378.

RE: Best Value You Have Ever Gotten On A Fare?

Hi,

The best deal I probably ever got was for this coming summer! I'm booked with IB from MIA to ALG, all for $1173! It might seem high, but for high season on tickets to Algeria that's a steal.

For comparison purposes, I paid $1375 for a ticket to ALG last summer with LH.

Cheers,
Imad

£65 LGW-BCN-LGW in Club Europe is probably the best value flight I can remember. I've booked multiple return flights with FR for £0.02 but never actually gone on them. LGW-DUB-LGW x2 and STN-GLA-STN.

I just flew BDL-JFK-PHX PHX-ATL-BDL for $230. The day after I booked the price doubled. I have also flown JFK-BOS-JFK same day for $50 rt on B6.

When JetsGo had their $1 return fare promotion, I flew YXS-YVR-YXS return for somewhere near $150 taxes & fees in.

The fares were nearly double that on both Westjet & AC Jazz.

Hmmm...I wonder how that worked out for JetsGo?  stirthepot
