Does The 747 Look Outdated

Fri Apr 18, 2008 9:52 am

Isn't it funny how an excellent car that was top of the line yesterday, can suddenly look old and outdated when the new model is out on the streets?

I've experienced the same with the 747. For me, the introduction of the A380 has made the 747 look old. The narrow body at the end, the "bump" that contains the upper deck and cockpit. It just looks 'classic'.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with it, but its looks are fading. For me, ayway....

I have an 8 year old Honda Accord 2-door EX coupe. Classic Honda body styling. Wouldn't trade it in for any of the new ones.

Ahh but there's a difference between 'Classic' and 'Out Dated'. To me it's a classic but not out dated.

Just as the trijets have a dated (but still CLASSIC) look, I think the 747 will go the same way. Like you say, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, and it is still a fantastic looking aircraft, but times move on and designs change. That's just the way things are.

The 747 looks like an amazing aircraft and I think it looks far more attractive that the A380 with the right livery.

I agree. In terms of looks I'd pick a 744 over an A380 anyday regardless of livery. Does not look outdated IMO, still an awe inspiring aircraft

Funny thing is, I always thought the 747 looked a bit dorky (as we say in the US) meaning awkward, dumpy, clumsy. That is, until the A380 arrived, then suddenly the 747 looked so elegant to me.

Not at all, it's a very classy looking, and IMO well proportioned, aircraft. The A380 for me looks like it was 4.50 pm on a Friday afternoon and the design team wanted to be done by 5.00

I thought the 737 (300, 400 and 500 ) series looked outdated until I saw and flew on the the 737NG series.

Talk about a revamp...what with the bigger engines, styled larger wheels, added new winglets (on the 700, 800 and 900s) Man! is she a beauty or what?

Wait until the 747-8i launches, you'll see that the 747 is just as beautiful as ever not even close to being outdated

Whatever about the 747's dating looks, the most dated of current Boeing's airliners is the 737. I like it for that reason, but it can't seem to shake-off its 1960s looks. It'll be a shame when these distintive airliners disappear forever, but times move on.

I'm afraid we seem to have arrived at the ultimate aircraft design with the modern A320/B777 style twinjet.

I feel the same way too. She will always be the Queen of the Skies for me. Of course you see the development stages she has gone through. Probably the last stage will look the best (747-8i). Even when we now have a new King of the Skies, which btw I also like very much, the beauty of the 747 design is indeed timeless!

Of course, in my humble opinion they both lose out to the A340-500! Her beauty and elegance is still unrivalled to me. I am not sure if the B787 and A350-XWB designs will change my opinion on that (to me) fact!!! Big grin. I have to see them myself first before I can change my view on their designs. And we all know that will take some time before we see that happening. The A340-500 I have seen close-up in detail and she impressed me very much!

Kind Regards!

The 747 is one of the most classically beautiful airliners ever built (I would suggest that others are the L1011, the VC10, the Caravelle, and the DC-9). It could never look "outdated"-- it would be like saying the Empire State Building looks "outdated." So somebody built a taller building -- what of it? It's still the Empire State Building.

Times move on. While the ESB is indeed a nice skyscraper (not as nice as the Chrysler Building though) no one would build a skyscraper like that now (unless it were a deliberate one-off retro design). That's why we appreicate old things: their times are over, and we like them all the more for it.

I agree that the VC10 and Caravelle are some of the most classically beautiful airliners (along with the Connie) but all these airliners belong to the past. There's no way anything like them would be built today. And the 747, classic and all as it is, will go the same way.

True. It's just too bad that practically everything built since the Second World War has been tripe.

By the way, great point about the Constellation--a truly beautiful bird. For some reason I was only thinking about jets. Of course, one has to include Concorde.  Smile

To me, seeing a 747 coming into or going out of JFK is still awe inspiring. As for looking outdated, sometimes I will see one in a c/s that will make it look a bit outdated, but there are some c/s's that just make that a/c even more awe inspiring.  cloudnine

Ouch!  cold

The 747 is and always will be a beautiful aircraft. The A380 is also beautiful. They are both unique aircraft and therein lies their beauty. One can certainly ask which is better looking, but it will always be a subjective thing, I for one love both and can appreciate the engineering marvels they both are.

I do think though that comparisions between the two are slightly unfair, for two reasons:

1.) The 747 is a classic with the original design being over 30 years old. The A380 is designed and built with new technology and it makes that technology look great. They are both wonderful aircraft but designed in two different era's.

2.) The 747 is the plane that most people have grown up seeing. This has been the face of aviation for 30 years. We are all used to it, and are so familiar with it, we love it. When the A380 becomes more commonplace at airports, and youngsters grow up with the A380 as the face of avaition, they too will say that they feel its looks are timeless and that the new aircraft will never compare.

IMHO.

Yoyr statement and photo sum it up. There is something about the way the flightdeck is up high and proud. The A380 does not look right where the flightdeck is located.

Yes looks don't sell aircraft but then the posistion of the flight did not help the freighter option on the 380 with no ability to front load.

The 380 will never be seen in anywhere as many airports of different liveries as the 747. The 747 is the undeniable "Queen of the Skies" but we have a King now and ugly to boot........

See previous post!

The thread title is "Does the 747 look outdated"
Wether the A380 is ugly or not has little to do with it. The A380 wether beautiful or ugly is definitly not outdated, so making the comparison is, again, problematic.

In my opinion, 747-400's look more modern, cutting edge, and graceful than 737-xxx, 757-xxx, 767-xxx, 777-xxx, A31x, A32x, A33x, A34x, and A380-x.

About the only bird that edges it in modernity is the 787, and well, the A350 is still to be seen in the flesh so no comment there. (747-1, 747-2 and 747-3's are not as fantastic as the 747-400's though).

I'm sure it has been stated before, but it's remarkable that an aircraft that made its maiden flight back in 1969 (39 years ago) is still so relevant and competitive!

I grew up on a 747, my first flight was on a 747.
To me the 747 is like a old, classic looked after Cadillac
that was a classic when it role of the production line and still is
classic.
Sure the A380 is more modern and sophisticated, but the 747 with the distinct bulge on top and the awesome looking
nose in my opinion is still one of the best looking aircraft ever built.

There's something about the nose on the 747 that makes it look "outdated". Still a beautiful plane though.  Smile
777, 767 and All airbus have different, more smooth looking noses. The 737 looks very outdated, the winglets just make them look even more like a compromise between old and new.

I prefer to think she looks "iconic".

There is no other plane that looks like her. She is truly in a class by herself, as is Concorde.

The A380 is certainly distinct, but it does share some design aesthetics with single deck planes.

I remember the first time I saw a 747 in the air (which was the morning after my first flight on one). It was over London in November 1972. It looked so BIG up there!

I can't agree that the 380 has made the 747 look outdated. It will always be a unique and beautiful aircraft and from the right angle it looks incredibly powerful.

I admit I am not a fan of the A380's aesthetics (it really does remind me of a Beluga whale, though I do not use the "WhaleJet" title for her), but I have always admired the look of her wings nose on.

However, I have to say, that picture of the SAA 744 that Andz posted above is absolute magic.  cloudnine

I'm not a fan of flying on the 747 (777 forever for me), but I admit I will miss her when she's gone from the skies. I caught 5X's latest 744 delivery flight out of PAE and darn if she didn't look good.

I hope airliners.net keeps the 744 on the web page for years to come.

I don't really think it is. I'd rather look at it than any hideous A380. The cockpit being on the upper deck improves the looks drastically. The A380 has an ugly "forehead" of sorts. So, as I see it, the 747 rocks.

The term "dated" doesn't imply "ugly", it just means something whose looks belong to the past, and this usually happens when that object is replaced by something more up-to-date.

Look at how dated the 747-200s look today, compared to the -400s. And, hard and all it may be for some people to swallow, the -400 will go the same way as it's replaced by newer aircraft.

And the A380 will, in its time, go the same way too.

whilst its not what the planes of the future will look like, it is by no means dated. for me rule no.1 cockpit goes on top. how long ago did they start placing bridges way up top on boats? forever ago? that hasn't changed at all and if anyone designed a boat that the bridge wasn't way up there, we would all think its silly. for me the design makes sense forever. driver up top

As others have said, the 747 has style and grace, which never gets old. Personally, I think dedicated 747-400 freighters look the best. The combination of the beautiful short upper deck, graceful winglets and blended wing to body fairing make this particular 747 model most attractive  yes . Nothing beats the shape of the 747 nose painted in a single, striking solid colour, and the lack of windows is also very nice.

RE: Does The 747 Look Outdated

Thu Apr 24, 2008 5:38 am

B747-400 has always been my favourite, but my favouritism is slowly heading over the the Airbus 330-200. The 744 is a beauty of an aircraft. Only flown it once  Sad. Hopefully get to fly it later in life... before it retires, which in my opinion it won't  Smile. QF livery on the B744 excellent!

Cheers
