Fly One Aircraft That's Still In Commerical Svce

Mon May 19, 2008 3:57 pm

If you could fly one aircraft that's still in commerical service which would it be and why?

It is, for me, a difficult decision - there are so many rare aircraft that I'd love to fly - but quite possibly the 74L or 707.

I think it'll be the 747-100! or the 707 as well! Or the 747SP?

Mine would have to be either one of the 707, 747SP or IL86 models.

One of the cheapest ways to do this, assuming you don't have a airline employee pass or whatever, is to fly SVO-AER = £70 one-way. Alternatively, you could fly, say, SIP-SVO-UUS (UUS is an Russian island near Japan) on the ILW and IL9 for around £225 all-in one-way.

You mean you haven't done the ATP already, pah, call yourself an enthusiast - get to the Azores now! And the Il-86, well I'm flying that in literally two months time, so ner ner ne ner nerrr!  tongue  Big grin

Mine would be the SAHA 707 - I'm working my but off now and about to start doing 14 hour shifts 5/6 days a week so that if Iran ever decide to give me a Visa when I apply for the third time, then I can go there straight away! I'd also want to get on the A312 and all the other Iranian rarities over there... mmm, one can dream! I'm also going to have a go when I'm in Baku in July, see if I can persuade the embassy there to gibe me a visa as I can get the coach to Tehran quite cheaply. Or perhaps I could hide under a lorry, what's the penalty for illegally entering Iran I wonder?  scratchchin

I'd say either the 707 or L-1011. Of course, there is also the 727, but the last time I flew on it was in 1999.

Absurdly expensive! Looking at £200-£250 return to PDL. Add £150 more and you could fly the 741 or 742 LHR-THR-LHR.

Dan, what are you doing this Dec or Jan 09?

When I did it in October last year I got my LIS-PDL tickets for £176, and LIS-LHR for £40, so yes it's expensive, but it's worth it; both for the aircraft and the scenery over there - I'd love to go back ASAP.

I've flown that one already but I'm looking at doing it again in November, so in response to James's question I'll hopefully be doing LHR-HEL-PEK on an AY MD-11 and then coming back overland by train.

During nine years in Russia, I started to actively avoid this type. Flown them on SU, Pulkovo, UTAir, and a couple of others. Very cramped... And on UTAir, I scored the seat in the row right in front of this cabin reinforcing rib. Seat could not recline. And the flight DME-Surgut was four hours.

FLown on both types, though Yak-40 only once - probably my slowest flight VKO-LED. But our office wasn't far from VKO, so by the time traffic to SVO was taken into account, worked out to be the same trip time. Unfortunately, I did not get the rear-facing seat with the large fixed table in front of it.
Yak-42 I've flown probably on 5 round trips Moscow-Krasnodar. Once in J on Avialinii Kubani when S7 Tu-154 went tec in Krasnodar.

FLown two return trips Moscow-AER. Once on Domodedovo Airlines in all-Y layout, and once on SU. Boarding via the integrated air-stairs and that fabulous vestibule. Stair is right next to APU, and damn noisy.

Able to help your favourite A.nutter - cough, me, cough - to get more discounted tickets?  angel  LOL

I already have 20 flights booked that should enable me to get on 13 new aircraft - unless damn substitutions occur. I'm thinking about an Iran tour this year, maybe in Dec, maybe Sept, but I'm not sure yet. It would be cheap - around £600 for all the flights, accommodation, visa (if I can get one - Plymspotter's applied twice, declined twice), etc. Could fly 741 or 742, 722, 707... But not sure whether I'll be able to do it this year. Hmm.

If you're ever after a very cheap one-way ticket LON-MOW, consider this example, based on the 16th September:

STN-HHN = 1105-1320 = FR = 738 = £4.99 all-in
HHN-VKO = 1510-2010 = XF = 320 = €68.78/£54.76 all-in

= £59.75 all-in

Of course, very boring aircraft, but a brilliant price - and you could get that price for the return, too.

Too bad they are flying half world away from where I am, and that a trip to meet this lady would be very, VERY expensive for me.

Absolutely categorically has to be the Boeing 707.

I haven't had the pleasure, and really want that pleasure.

My other aircraft is not in -commercial- service - the VC10. Wonder if we could get together a one hour a.net charter with the RAF for a whirl in the FunBus!

At least i´ll be filling a gap in my list this coming october ...

Staying in SE Asia arriving at BKK and returning from MNL i´m seriously considering to fly THAI OASIS on their 747-100 (BKK-HKG)
Just hope the airline is still alive then ...  Wink

... and maybe KRABI AIRLINE (B 747-300) if they ever get the airline started  Yeah sure

I've ridden most of the classic American jets.

I somehow missed out on MD-11s. Still need to ride a 777, though I'm sure I'll get my chance sooner or later.

Got to fly top deck on a 744 a few years ago which was a big deal for me. My other big aviation goal of flying a Concorde never came to pass, though. At least I got to see the inside of one at the Intrepid.

If I had to pick a dream ride today, it would have to be one of the Russians. Never been on any of them. I'd love to fly on an Il-96 or Il-62, though for what I do, that's pretty unlikely anytime soon.

I know Aloha was the last US carrier to fly them on Commerical PAX service, somewhere they still have to be in use. 737-200. OR. Another Trip on a TRISTAR will do just fine.
