Best Phase Of Flight

Fri May 30, 2008 11:59 am

What is the best phase of flying for you: take off, in flight, landing, perhaps even the member's lounge before flight (depending on the airline)?

The takeoff is my favourite part since it means you have a journey in front of you, which for me is exciting, and landings are also cool (speaking as a passenger)

As a pilot, I enjoy the landings the most, since I really enjoy doing greasers if possible :P The approach is cool too!

I think that the majority in this site will say take off/landing is the best phase of a flight.

Takeoff is definitely my most favorite part. It's the immediate split second after the main wheels leave the ground. But of course everything in a flight is great.

Approach and landing... I love all the turns and watching the city or whatever below become closer and more detailed. Plus in the back of my mind, I know landing is the most difficult thing for a pilot to do in a flight, so I guess that enhances it for me as well.

Take off is my favorite phase-breaking free of the ground and feeling the thrust of the engines push you back into the seat.

Landing is awesome because I love the feeling of gradually decending.

That's what I was going to say. I love seeing my destination from the air during the approach.

Powerful take offs in prop aircraft like the WF Dash8-100 and 2W D328 I had in the recent week.

When I'm at the controls landing is my favorite part. As a passenger take off is fun.

Take off because I like the acceleration and then finally getting into the air and enjoy it.

Landing: will it be a hard or soft touchdown Big grin

I love these things as a passenger, holding near the runway before take off, Take Off, some Turbulence and finally Landing!

i love anytime your below 10,000. climb out and approach (or on short hops like YYJ - YVR at 4,000 the whole flight.) i like looking down upon where ever i am above and actually be able to see the hustle and bustle in detail.

Takeoff is fun but short.

Final approach and landing is fun because no matter how crappy the weather is, you can (usually!) finally see something. And there's the nice anticipation of how good or crappy the landing will be.

Cruise is OK but very dependent on weather and scenery, so I can't say it's the best part of the flight.

I love the takeoff and landing the most. Not that the rest of the flight is bad, though. Light turbulence is also fun.

Turbulence is the best, especially on landing. As a pilot my favorite phase is when I'm in the flare, right before the wheels kiss the ground .

I'd have to say landing is the best part. I love the bump of the wheels touching down.

I have two, which are both very short....

1) During take off at that second when the back main gears finally lift off the ground and you are just kind of gliding a couple feet off the ground before you really get going into the air.

2) and at landing right before you touchdown and you kind of float up and down for a few seconds before you hit the ground.

For me, although very rare, I love the aborted landing. The look on the other pax's faces is well worth the price of the ticket.

Simply to be different, I'll say cruise- you just sit back and watch the skies and the earth drift by (assuming a window seat). Very relaxing. Next to that, take-off would be my favorite part.

My favorite is either takeoff or landing but in either case I LOVE some turbulence tossed in there! It makes it so much fun! Its like being on a roller-coaster!!!! ^_^

Yep..The US Airways Club for me, if I can get in. When I pass through CLT, I always say hi to the very freindly staff there. PHL clubs are really mean and PIT is also nice. I get some great pics from there and the staff is so nice to be around.

For me, my favorite part of flight is the Thrust effect from take-off, IF, and Landing. The thrust effect and landing is soo cool and IF is the time I can eat, drink, and sleep (and I guess take pictures of everything because I'm an A.nutter  Smile )

In a passenger aircraft my favourite bit would be the final approach in turbulence.

In a glider though it would have to be when you disconnect from the aero-tow and it all goes quiet...just the rush of air moving over the canopy. It can only get better if this happens and immediately the veriometer is making super fast high pitch beeps to tell you the tuggie has dropped you right into the middle of a 10 knot thermal  Big grin

In any aircraft turbulence is good, but in a small glider it is fantastic.

What is not so good is getting into a glider someone has been sick in recently....some people handle the turbulence easier than others.

Takeoff - ONLY in an A340 and in front of the wings. I like the A340 takeoff. It's slow and graceful and really quiet. Has a very majestic feel to it which makes you appreciate flight more I think.

Landing - any aircraft... I love the feeling of approach-touchdown.

I am surprised so many people enjoy turbulence. I do as well, but when I tell this to friends or travel mates they react if I am crazy. Can this be related to the love of flying?

I like the cruise phase of a flight best, especially with some turbulence (duh). Take offs and landings are good too, but only if exciting due to weather or something.

And yes, I also enjoy the pre-flight lounge experience and particularly a good shower after a long flight. The ultimate: a transit in Hong Kong using the CX lounges.  Smile

480 knots, 250 feet, pulling 7G- no other feeling like it in the world. It a feeling that humans were not designed to experience, painful and phenominal at the same time!

As a PPL, those times when you are looking out your left or right window at the runway in a heavy crosswind during landing, having your legs and both hands constantly moving to wrestle the airplane on the ground... And that great feeling you get after you made a challenging landing in one piece  Smile

As a PAX, like most people, I like the take off for the thrill, the landing for the scenery and the curiosity of a destination I have not yet seen or it has been a while, and the great turbulence once in a while.

Has to be the landing, when you flare over the runway a second and then suddenly .... thud, and the spoilers flip up and reverse thrust is applied (most of the time).
Heading to Corfu airport on Friday, love that airport as pilots have to stop ASAP.

I am pretty fond of the ground experience, especially at a new or favorite airport, so I actually do not mind connecting flights at all if time permits. As a small fry I always enjoyed passing through CVG on the way to and from CHA because it meant a bus ride out on the ramp.

As far as the actual flight goes, approach and descent.

As a passenger, cruise. The concept of hurtling through the sky 7 miles from anything solid supported by a few rivets, nuts and bolts in a pressurized tube is a weird one.

As a pilot, probably landing. The feeling of flaring, or just as the mains hit the ground (hopefully softly. Still gotta work on that part  Wink)
