Airlines That Badly Need A Livery Change

Sat Jul 26, 2008 10:50 pm

Does anyone think some airline liveries are outdated? I do and I think
- Iberia Airlines
- Olympic Airways
- Southwest Airlines
should get a repaint.

Air India was on the list too but they drastically improved with the introduction of their new scheme earlier this year.

Feel free to add any other carriers to the list.

It's a little early for Southwest to be changing liveries. Their current livery was only introduced in 2001 and I don't think they've even finished repainting their entire fleet yet.

I agree that CO needs an update. I like it and want them to keep it very classy. Don't redo it completely, but just update it a bit and by doing so I mean add a bit of color.

The colors are fine, but the stylized "s" on the tail doesn't match the rest of the livery (Plus the only color that is used in the stylized "s" that is anywhere else on the livery is the red.). If you're going to use a letter as your tail logo, it should be of the same font as what is used on the fuselage. AirTran does this in a well-executed manner:

They keep the same font but for the tail logo, make it bold so to stand out better. My only complaint with their livery is the swoop. I think that it would have looked better as a straight line instead of the swoop. Or if you're going to do the swoop, position it in a way so that the teal green used on the tail and belly better match up.

Quoting Larshjort (Reply 12):

The livery reminds me of those clown cars you see at the circus.

Quoting Bbinn333 (Reply 3):

That livery at this point is iconic. Not too many airlines have used a basically unchanged livery for nearly 40 years. While there have been a few variations on it (the gray A300s, hybrid liveries involving a/c that came in via merger), it has essentially remained untouched. When the current livery was first made public back in the late 1960s, the "scissors" eagle was not included, and sparked a bit of controversy since the eagle had been part of the AA logo since the 1930s. The AA logo is definitely one of the most recognizable airline logos in the world. It's not as iconic as the Pan Am globe logo (You think 1960s airline logos and it immediately pops into your head as the logo is associated with some major pop cultural events of the era.), but is as American (pardon the pun) as the Coca-Cola logo.

AA's livery still looks very modern considering that it celebrates it's 40th birthday this year. Think of all the money they've saved over those 40 years by not having to pay expensive design consultants and waste management time to come up with new liveries that are frequently no improvement on the old one.

December 1, 1969 (oldest A.net photo with the current livery), and the one it replaced.

CO's livery also still looks good. I was introduced in 1991.

It also helps present a consistent image when your entire fleet is in the same livery. When you change it it takes several years before everthing is the same again. Just look at the number of changes DL has made. Their fleet has been a mix of 3 liveries for as long as I can remember.

We may joke about Delta but this new livery is so boring. I've tried to like it but just can't. The "Delta" font is TOO small. They should have gone back to the 70's -90's widget scheme on the tail with a plain white fuselage and big Delta font. That would have updated the original nicely. I actually think most European liveries are the nicest now, KLM and Lufthansa are still as classy as ever, the new TAP, Air France. Great stuff.

U.S. wise, I think Continental is standing the test of time. Understated and classy. United's new is cheesy looking, Southwest is still a joke. I think American may be the best right now. It, too, stands the test of time. US Airways old, the midnight blue, was great. This new one now looks like all the others. I like Northwest's although it may soon be a thing of the past.

PS-yes, SAS should go back to the old. That was great. New one with the aweful red engines and blue tail is disappointing.

Alitalia's new colors are a HUGE improvement with the smaller cheatline, even though it was only a slight change. I wish they'd bring back the black noses! And, the new colors look really really good on the MD-80s!

Quoting Baexecutive (Reply 13):
Singapore Airlines

This is one of my favorite liveries, especially on the A340-500. On the 744 and 380 it's too white, and on the 777 it needs to start further forward. But on the A340 it looks incredible!

Now, as for the ones I think need updates....
Kuwait - this had been around for a while and needs a kick in the rear. Some more color and maybe a new, more modern logo.

Air France - the definition of EuroWhite. It needs color. The French are such patriotic people and yet the livery of their flag carrier is so simple and conspicuous. Some Eurowhite liveries just work very well (SA, BA, LH, LX, etc) but AFs livery needs an upgrade badly.

Let's not get too optimistic now ANITIX. That OA scheme looks as old as the hills and Iberia just looks too plain.

What are the non-Irish members' thoughts on the Aer Lingus livery? I'd probably be a bit biased in saying I think its one of the best and most symbolic going.

Get rid of the blue line but keep the light green and maybe extend it further forward. The Shamrock is fine, maybe they could make slightly larger or go for a big change and make it so big that it doesn't fit on the tail a bit like how QR updated their livery.

Yeah a shadow behind it to make it stand out a bit more might be good. I'm not sure I'd like to see an entirely new Shamrock logo so modifying it slightly could give it a fresher look.

AA-I hope AA never changes there livery, that is the most badass livery ever. Gotta love the silver birds.

DELTA-One livery that does need changing is delta, it's been about a year since they came out with there what? 3rd livery in like 10 years?

UNITED--The gray was ok, just ok. There newest livery is good, I like it a lot, but nothing beats the one right before the gray.

NW-Love there new livery, don't want it to ever go away, even though it will soon.

CO-Plain, simple, but pretty cool.

US-never been a big fan of there livery

So my conclusion is...US Airways should change there livery to something awesome

All these aforementionned carriers share the same boring white colour. I don't see where the LX planes look better than the AF ones, honeslty...

I agree with FlySCC, AF's livery is easily recognizable and should not be changed. They just need to wash them more often  Wink

OK. Both the old and new livery are very boring and lack personality.

Has to be LOT & El Al, SO BORING! duck

Well, I do like LOT livery. It may be old, but it still is charming and very up-to-date.

Talking about the French being "such patriotic people" ! Could you explain me what is that "thing" on the tail of the National airline of your country ? :

Haha. It's the logo of the international red cross, obviously. We love good healthcare!

Personal opinions. Many people love the AF livery, and many people hate the LX one. I'm just the opposite. I will admit that of the ones that I call "boring Eurowhite", AF's is one of the better ones when the aircraft are clean. But I still think that with blue, white, and red as the national colors, AF could come up with something striking and impressive to represent the country's passion, culture, and history without going too far.

Mais, c'est la vie! On a tous des idees differentes!

I find AF's livery to be one of the best in the sky. Simple, clean, consistent (clean in the sense of design, not necessarily the planes...). It is executed amazingly across all consumer and customer touchpoints, from the airport, to the lounge, to the printed materials, to advertising/branding to the livery.

I say keep it for another 30yrs.

I like the AF one too-simple but nice. I also don't see any problems with LX.
