Titanic Battle Of Business Classes EK, SQ, BA, CX

Wed Jul 30, 2008 3:03 pm

.
Business class is very important for most airlines. High revenues and significant numbers of seats. It's the revenue machine behind corporate contracts, frequent flyers, people who don't know what their tickets cost..

I think Emirates raised the bar with their new A380 seats, that will doubt be included in other aircraft types.

Of course I haven't flown EK's new business class, but so haven't the passengers that have yet to try it. So perceived /subjective quality/value for money is very important!

EK Perceived qualities, score 1 - 10 (10 best)

1. Personal space : 8
2. Seating comfort : 9
3. Sleeping Comfort : 7
4. Look / feeling : 9
5. IFE / Connectivity : 9
6. Crew : 6 they seem to be hired
7. Catering : 8 assume the have the budget & hire the cooks..
8. Comment : I like the little table put put away glasses, peanuts, newspapers, headsets etc. eating up my personal space  Wink Big upperdeck bar looks nice too.

3. Sleeping Comfort : 9
4. Look / feeling : 9
5. IFE / Connectivity : 8
6. Crew : 8, nice, don't seem to have an opinion
7. Catering : 9, seem to spend a lot there
8. Comment : if it was only for sleeping i would prefer the wide flat seat, that no doubt trun into an accpetable bed. However I sit most of the time..

How do you perceive the newest business classes of CX, QF, DL, JAL, UA, LH, AF/KL or any other airline?

I'm not too crazy about that second setup above, the seat looks like something out of a 1970s pickup truck and the personal space seems tiny.

Photo is a bit misleading. These seats are massive - 2 people can sit side by side in them. Overall personal space is good.

4. Look / feeling : 7
5. IFE / Connectivity : 7
6. Crew : 9, style, professional
7. Catering : 8, route dedicated

I'm sure that's what he meant.

One issue with SQ is that the seat is actually too wide....it knocks you around a bit in turbulence...and is incredibly stiff. It does actually feel like a bench seat in a truck.

As much as I'll get flamed for this...I actually appreciated the BA Cradle seats....and CO Biz First seats. I think the lay-flat seat is entirely overrated. I like the privacy...I just don't care for the wafer thin seats that are generally installed.

And what about this pioneer of the reverse herring bone layout for J seats ?.

It has been such a popular layout that other airlines are now copying it in their cabins.

what about QR, their business class is very comfortable, lie-flat bed, with a nice atmosphere and top quality catering and service. Can't compare with anything else though so what do you guys think about them?

While it's ultimately a matter of personal opinion, the best sleep I've ever gotten on an aircraft in C is in VS's Upper Class on the 747. Over the years I've experienced DL, AA, BA, SQ and Swiss Air's international C offerings. None came close to VS.

Yes, SQ!

United Airlines Perceived qualities, score 1 - 10 (10 best)

1. Personal space : 9, it seems more spacey then e.g SQ cubicals.
2. Seating comfort : 8 I think it's relatively narrow, ~8 abreast on a 777.
3. Sleeping Comfort : seems on par with others
4. Look / feeling : 8 OK I guess, lets make that a nine I like the space..
5. IFE / Connectivity : 8, screens are big 12.5" & located at some distance, connectivity?
6. Crew: 7, is UA better then Delta, NWA ?
7. Catering: 8, benefit of the doubt, I like Californian wine  Wink
8. Comment: Seat seems on par with better Asian products, but better then other US carriers.

The new EK seat looks remarkably similar to the recently announced (albeit, not yet installed) LX C-class seats. are they the same product?

I don't think a robust decision about Business Class seats can take place without considering Etihad's Pearl Business Class. Yes, EK and SQ have a very nice new product but what percentage of their fleet is currently represented by it? EK for instance must have at least 5 variations of Business Class on its different aircraft. Etihad on the other hand have exactly the same fully lie flat bed on every one of their wide bodied aircraft. I think consistency is the key to any product or service proposition.

Qantas product is dated and doesn't seem very comfortable. UA's i'm not sure about.

What about AA AF Air New Zealand. Can we count DL and CO's new products (they are essentially a mix of Biz and First)

Virgin Perceived qualities, score 1 - 10 (10 best)

1. Personal space : 7, bit narrow, every by passer confronts you?
2. Seating comfort : 8, seems ok. Good aisle access
3. Sleeping Comfort : 8 not very wide, seems nice / privat
4. Look / feeling : 9 Virgin feeling, nice bar, full frills
5. IFE / Connectivity 6: somehow I expect some better from Virgin, smallish not ideal positioned screen.
6. Crew: 8, used to be young & enthousiatic
7. Catering: 8, have seen nice innovative concepts in the past (~plate service)
8. Comment: Wonder what VS will put in their A380s to raise to bar..

Am I the only one who thinks the SQ and now EK A380 J seats look horribly cramped. I know they're not in any way and are in fact huge but I don't like the "in your face" seat in front of you, I like a seat to feel as roomy as it actually is.

I had that exact same thought when I saw the SQ seat. However, having sat in one of those monsters lately, I can assure you that that feeling goes away once you're actually in the seat. You barely notice that there's a seat in front of you. Photographs can't do it much justice I'm afraid as most of the space is hidden from the photos (except just how WIDE it is..my mum and I fit into the same seat - having said that, she still prefers the old spacebed...)
