Cathay Pacific Flight From JFK To Vancouver

Fri Aug 15, 2008 12:13 pm

I have to travel in a few months to Vancouver for a meeting and was pleasantly surprised to see that the cheapest fares (not to mention, the only nonstop I found) was on Cathay Pacific.

The aircraft is listed as a 773. I wanted to make sure that this is the 77W (-300ER) series with the new seats, correct? The non -ER 773s wouldn't have the legs to do Vancouver - Hong Kong nonstop anyway would they?

Also, how does it works with customs and immigration on the flight from YVR to JFK? Do you clear US immigration at Vancouver like you do for other Canadian flights, and does the flight arrive into JFK as a domestic or international arrival?

Thanks!

If it's a 777-300, it should definitely be an -ER. This flight is currently a 744 (and generally has been in the past), but it appears to be switching sometime in the spring.

You don't pre-clear like other transborder flights--the whole plane clears immigration and customs on arrival at JFK like other international flights (at least this was the case when I took the flight a few years back).

Enjoy--it's a great way to get to Vancouver!

I am pretty sure AC runs a daily sflight from YVR to JFK as well

Will most definately be 777-300ER. The CX888/889 switches from a 744 in October.

Also, does anyone know what the onboard service is like on the YVR-JFK-YVR legs? I assume that there is a full lunch in F/C/Y on YVR-JFK (which leaves a bit after 1pm), but the return JFK-YVR is something like a 11:30pm departure out of JFK. Is there a full dinner service in F/J or something more limited?

I thought I read somewhere that CX is getting ready to axe this route?
What is it? It's A 747-400, but that's not important right now.

Just my two cents. I took this flight about 2 years on a B744 and as many say, you do not pre-clear customs like other transborder flights. Thus you enter the plane in Vancouver like any other int'l flight that leaves at the same time (NRT, KIX (ending), PEK, ICN, etc). There is a lunch service on the way to JFK.

On the way back, I know the flight leaves JFK at 11:30 pm or so, but there is a full service dinner on this flight. That is for Y/J/F. And the Chinese food on Cathay was great!!!

But as the last person said, I have been hearing rumours that this flight might become something of the past, relatively soon.

Chinese whispers. It's an a.net rumour coming from another thread, which in turn came from another thread, which in turn came from another thread... And then it became an a.net fact.

Enjoy your flight. I had the same flight 3 years ago with CX 744 using AA 45K miles for a business class RT (the best way to burn AA 45K miles------I'm not sure how many miles is needed now). Economy class will have full dinner service westbound and lunch service
eastbound. Customs and immigration are done on arrival at both airports.
