Loudest Aircraft During Takeoff?

Tue Jun 16, 2009 2:45 am

Two questions:

1. Which common commercial aircraft make the most noise during takeoff?

2. And same question, but relative to other aircraft of similar size? For example what's louder, Airbus 340 or Boeing 747? Or, 777 vs Airbus 330.

I noticed that MD-80's (or maybe it was DC-9) are so loud it's almost ridiculous. I would not be surprised if it is as loud or louder as much larger aircraft.

727 IMHO (if you exclude Concorde as it no longer operates). The old 707s could roar too.
I don't care what you think of my opinion. It's my opinion, so have a nice day :)

I find Boeing aircraft are louder at take-off (and in flight) than Airbus planes.

There is information here:

http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/...quarters_offices/aep/noise_levels/

Looks like the Boeing 747-200 with JT9D-3A engines is the noisiest.

The MD-80 with JT8D-217 falls between the Airbus A321-231 with V2533A5 and the Boeing 777-200 with PW4090.

++ Note: The Appendix 1 in Excel is very detailed and lists 1,002 different aircraft types. ++

As far as aircraft in current service, definitely the DC-9 series.

For historical aircraft, the VC-10 is pretty loud. The 747-100 with the original PW engines was crazy loud, as was the 707.

The 707/720 with the old pratts on it makes a hell of a noise when it takes off.

The RAF still operates the VC-10. It has a rather unique noise signature.

For me, being a deafguy......

727's, 732's and M80's are the loudest...in terms of how much I can feel the vibrations from a very, very good distance....say two or three football fields away.

I once sat in the very rear of a spirit md-80. That seat didn't have any windows and it was so loud, that I almost went deaf. It was just a few days ago that I was looking at a pic of one and realized that the engine was RIGHT THERE. Those things can scream.

I'd almost call it a tie between the two...  Wink

I was about 1/4 mile behind the runway end when the French President's Concorde took off from IAH in July of 1976, and I guess it would have had to take first prize....

C-5s are loud but a different kind of loud if that makes sense. i would say the 727 is the loudest commercial airplane I've ever heard but the loudest plane I've ever heard is an AV-8B, wow is all i have to say. Additionally on the opposite end of the spectrum the quietest plane I've heard is the U-2, but it was landing so not a good judge i guess.

Im with you guys on the VC-10. The Royal A/F runs one in and out of ABQ every now and then. Holy cow is that thing loud on departure, and uses a lot of runway as well. BA used to bring the Concorde into MCO back in the 80s once in a while. I lived about 5 miles off the end of RWY 35r. I swear it sounded like the darn thing was coming right through my house.

I agree with you. I work in a fairly sound proof office very close to DXB Intl. The only time sound is able to penetrate the walls is when a TU-154 takes off.... Those machines are very loud.

Over Thanksgiving last year, the RAF had a VC10 into SAN. When it took off, we were about 1 mile south of the departure path in Pt. Loma and heard the aircraft for at least 10 minutes as it took off, made the 180 degree left turn to the east. It must have been way east of Coronado when the roar stopped.

The 707 w/Rolls Royce engines (BA used to fly them) really screamed on takeoff. I'd see one on the ORD-LHR run. If you were driving in your car on Manheim Rd and one took off over your car even the car windows would vibrate!

B2 beats it hands down. On a quite low power approach you can't hear it until it's well past. That thing is stealthy in every sense of the word.

Now if we are getting into mil aircraft, my favorite (maybe not the loudest, but certainly the 'best' sound) is a lit up Tomcat... mmmmmmm

I used to work at Gatwick when almost the only aircraft based there were the VC10, Conway powered 707, BAC 1-11 and Comet. My office was near the runway and when any of these aircraft was powered up it was impossible to hear any voice, speak or hear the phone. We hear of severe noise today but it is nothing compared with the misery then. Night take-offs by the VC10 were by far the worst. I lived about 10 miles from the runway and could hear power changes while the aircraft was on the ground. The take off noise only faded after the machine had travelled at least 50 miles.

Of what I heard:
Number one Concorde

After a Concorde takeoff, Heathrow seemed like a quet place for minutes.

Number 2 VC10 and Il62
Number 3 Tu 154 and Il86, also Tu134 helds up to them.
747 classics
707 and DC8-60 with old engines

727 as well as MD80 are very silent compared to that list.

That reminds me of the L-188 and C130s... You can feel them coming before you hear them... Any glass that points towards the runway would vibrate before you hear them.

What's funny is that an L-100 Herk on take off broke several windows at our house one day, and the 747 (with those nasty old JT9Ds) never did. Although the IL-62s made us think "dampeners" were in store.

Note: The house was about 3 NM from the runway.

Loudest prop noise would be L-188 and C130 based on experience, but I'm told the Tu95 is F-in loud... so loud that on low MAD passes, submarines at some depth can hear them and determine the type.

Let's not talk about blade noise from the helicopters...  Smile

You said "aircraft"?

The Saturn V launch vehicle made the loudest sound ever known to human ears by a non-catastrophic event. Excluding the Krakatoa eruption or a hydrogen bomb test.

The sound was so loud that that it took a million gallons of water immediately dumped on the launch stand to absorb the shockwave.

Had the water not been used, the sound alone would have torn the launch vehicle apart.

I'd say the loudest i've heard were the JT3 or Conway powered 707s - louder than an F16 or similar, and louder than a VC10 as well, although not by much.

Always found the V2500-powered Airbus narrowbodies to be considerably quieter than the CFM-powered birds. Especially on landing.

Anyone else noticed that?

The Tu-154M is actually rather quiet (comparable to MD-80), as it is Chapter 3 compliant.

The loudest I have ever witnessed is the Tu-134. Just for a comparison, back in the early 1990s, the local traffic at TLL was made up primarily of Tu-134's, with once-per-day visit by a Lufthansa 737-200 and a SAS DC-9-41. Everyone regarded the 737s and DC-9s as "the quiet and modern Western airplanes".

I've seen pictures of my grandparents house after the cluster of all 5 engines were test fired on Redstone Arsenal. They lost a few windows in the deal as did many people in Huntsville. I think they were probably 5-8 miles straight line distance from the test stand.

It isnt just what loudest, but how big the "foot print" is. When an old 727 would pass over, not only was it loud, the sound would hang in the air for 5 minutes.

The MD-80 today has the largest foot print probably

all in no particular order.

The MD-80 and Vickers VC-10 are so far the loudest thing I've heard and the noise from these two during takeoff makes the ground shake so badly that you would think you are feeling a small earthquake and that's from over 1km away. I can't imagine what it would feel like closer up.
