What's Your Longest-since Airline?

Sat Sep 05, 2009 6:42 pm

Periodically in airline-type-forums like this I see a thread asking about people's earliest ever airline memory (for me it was a Delta trip from hometown of Chi-town to see Mom's old college roommate (Auntie Gloria) in St. Louis in the mid-70's. (Delta operated a Chicago-STL flight?) But then I took Delta again in 2001 (well, I BOOKED Delta in 2001, SFO-YYZ; they interlined me onto AC for the outbound flight), so it's no longer my longest-time-since airline.

That distinction goes to American. When we moved from Chicago to Boston in 1977, Dad's company paid for the moving van and also put us on an AA flight to Boston. That was in 1977 and as it happens, I haven't been on American ever since. (I take UA, US, CO, AC quite a bit, so they of course can't get longest-since status either.)

Surely you fellow a.netters keep track of all the airlines you've travelled aboard - which is the one on which your last flight was longest ago?
Pancakes are delicious.

For me, that's probably AA, who I last flew in 1999 OMA-DFW-FRA-DFW-OMA. I remember getting to fly a Fokker F100 on the DFW-OMA leg  Smile  highfive   praise

Thats really easy. It was an Air Holland flight far before the airlines black period. It was my first flight ever, and the only flight on this airline.

I assume it was a 737-300 though it could have been a 757-200 too. I don't have any photos  Angry

Mine was an Aeroflot Illyushin Il-62 (SNN-ORD) in 1994. I remember being stuck in the bathroom and not being able to open the door. I was only a young'un at the time.

It was Sabena, about 19 years ago. The first airline I remember I haven't flown since was Trans Travel Airlines from the Netherlands. Unsurprisingly, both have gone bust in the mean-time.

For me it is SAS. It has been 19 years since I flew the 767 SEA-CPH.

Mine was Northwest Airlines. Flew them in 1998 ORF-DTW-KIX-MNL and back, then the next time I flew em was ORF-DTW-SEA-MSP-DTW-ORF in 2004. Six years gap!

Pan Am for me. Flew them in 1991, and they went bus shortly thereafter. My only two flights on Pan Am (both were on 727-200s).

Of airlines still alive, probably British Airways, who I haven't flown since 2000. That'll change in January though, as I'll be on BA for an LHR-AMS sector. When that happens, it'll fall back to AA, who I haven't been on since October 2007.

For me I think it would be Southwest, last flown in mid 2004. I have nothing against Southwest; it's just that they either don't fly to where I'm going, or when they do I find a better deal on another airline.

Korean Air or Asiana for me. Last time I flew 'em was in the mid-90's on a domestic flight. Runner-up would be Business Express, with my last (and first) flight on them being in May of 2000 BOS-YHZ-BOS when they were American Eagle/Northwest Airlink partners.

If we are talking about airlines that still exist it will be TAP. I flew LIS-LAD-HRE (then Salisbury) on a Boeing 707 in January 1973. First and last TAP flight.

Airlines that don't exist anymore: America West SAN-LAS-SAN in 1997.

The longest for me was that I have not flown on CO since the late 80's and US (when it was named USAir) in the early 90's.

CO was the very first airline I ever flew on. SEA-SJC-LAX-SJC-SEA.

The longest for me was uh, I have to dig it up, yes, it was CP from HKG to YVR. Was VERY young then, halfway in the flight I must've irritated the heck out of the passengers by crying and saying I wanted to go home cos the flight was so long.... :P

SQ, on my PER-SIN-ICN-YVR round trip in December 2001. PER-SIN and SIN-PER was on a B772, SIN-ICN-YVR-ICN-SIN on A343. I remember there was some moderate to heavy turbulence on the ICN-YVR leg, which lasted what seemed like half an hour when we were flying over the Bering Sea.

Interestingly, SQ was also my first memory of flying, my first flight being on SQ from HKG-SIN-PER on B743 and B742.

My childhood first flight and memory - now history - was on TW.

Childhood memory of airline that is still operating. . . none. As a kid (under 18) also flew on Allegheny, Braniff, North Central, Pan Am, Hughes Air West, BEA - all gone also. . . Although I suppose BEA was really part of now, British Airways.

Geez, you're all youngsters!
First flight: 1953. Capital Airlines DC-3. ORF-ECG-RMT-RDU. Barfed every segment but LOVED IT. My parents were mortified to learn I had been so sick, but I begged them to let me fly back home to ORF instead of the dreaded car ride - promising not to vomit ever again - but nixed because my ticket cost $6.12 out of my poor military Dad's paycheck.
I had to wait until 1955 for my next ride - a DC-6 (USNavy C-118) from California to Guam. My commitment to never vomit again failed - lost it between OAK and HNL due to turbulence, an engine failure and having to wear a life jacket for 3 hours before landing. I was a trooper however for the remainder of the 20+ hours my Mom and I were aboard that same plane after an overnight in HNL, and no airsickness thousands of hours later to this day!
Fun to think of the memories. I found a picture on google of this C-118 we flew on. Ship #605, with Squardron VR-21 based in Alameda NAS. Talk about memories flooding back looking at a plane we flew on 54 years ago. Incredible adventure for a kid.

LOL... SU IL62 would have been cool though. Mine would have to be Aeroflot over 10 years ago . Business Class SNN-SVO-DEL. Today I was searching for old photos and found this which is the A/C I flew on.

Airline that is still here: UA, haven't flown them since the early 70s, and I have no recollection of those flights, I was a toddler at the time.

Airline that is gone: AirCal, flew them PDX-ONT-PDX in the fall of 1984.

SAS provided me with my second ever flight 20 years (ARN to GOT) in 1989, I flew them 4 times that summer and never since!

I took some nice photos on the return flight of the flaps as we came into land (MD82) i must try and find them!

I haven't been on QF or NZ since 1990, flew a QF 744 VH-OJB which for back then was pretty cool, and an NZ 762 IIRC.

DL through CVG (I think?), I swear one of the flights was a L1011, but I cannot remember. It was like in 1995, I was a kid. Will take them soon again though, I have to get away from US Airways somehow.

Hmm, mine would be Tatra Air in June 1998. KSC-BTS aboard of wet leased Yak 40, Saab 340 for the return trip (same day). The airline is, however, long gone.
If we are talking about airlines that still exist, it would be OK. KSC-PRG-YYZ; April 14, 2001.

1987 was the second time in my life i flew and the first memory. (The other time I was an infant in 1977 and my parents flew Piedmont from North Carolina to ROC)

We flew a USAir DC-9 ROC-BOS and I remember it was all coach with a table in the first two rows. Row 1 actually faced the back of the cabin.

We then flew a USAir MD-80 from BOS to PWM and we sat in the back. I thought it was the biggest plane in the world. (I was only 10 at the time)

On the way back we flew Delta PWM-BOS (737-300 I think) and then a USAir DC-9 back to ROC. It has the same configuration as the first USAir DC-9 we were on.

Ah...memories!

Mine would be on America West from Phoenix to Denver and back in 1995. That is actually the first and only time I ever flew on HP.

As far as airlines that are still around I don't think I can come up with one because I have flown all of them within the past 5 years. I fly AA and NW/DL most of the time, last flew US in 2007, WN in 2005, UA in 2004, and CO in 2003. SO I guess I would have to say none.

Well not counting the airlines that have fallen by the way side my longest since airline would have to be Air Pacific. In 1980 I flew them on a domestic sector on a Bac 1-11 from Suva back to Nadi. It was a very rough 20 minute flight and my first and only on the Bac1-11 and also the only time ever on Air Pacific.
I remember when the DC-3 was new!

My memories of air travel start in the 50's of my teenage years when I studied in Sao Paulo and my parents lived in Montevideo. So my first airline ever was the old Real which later merged into Real-Aerovias Brasil and Varig. My first ever commercial flight must have been a CGH/MVD on Real's Convair 440.
Then it is a big blur of several flights in South America, of which two stand out: A Cruzeiro do Sul DC-3 from CMG to SRZ with two stops that no longer have scheduled service: San Jose and Robore; and another DC-3 of Faucett Airlines from LIM to CUZ, operated from the old LIM airport (Limatambo) in San Isidro, over the Andes mountains without any pressutization whatsoever, and the crew would bring you oxygen tubes to suck by a plastic tube.
But the first flight I took that I recall all details vividly was when my mother and I would travel to join my father in Michigan. It was 1958 and the airline in question again Real Aerovias with a DC-4 routed from Sao Paulo to Belem to Port of Spain to Caracas to Santo Domingo (then Ciudad Trujillo) to Miami. Excellent old school service with linen, silverware, and crystal vase with red carnation for the meals. The stop in Belem was in the middle of the night and I can still feel the heat invading the cabin as opening the doors was like opening an oven. And it was 2:30am!
In Miami Beach we stayed at the hotel where the Real crew stayed, and it was good because we had a bad experience with Boston style sweet beans at a cafeteria, (nothing like the Brazilian black beans we were used to). But the Real crew set us straight and showed us the way to Hialeah and the Cuban restaurants...
But if we are talking about airlines still in existence, that should go to AZ in the mid-sixties on the first time I went to Europe: GIG-DKR-FCO in a DC-8.
The stop in Dakar was in the wee hours of the morning, and there was some delay so we were deplaned and taken to the airport restaurant for breakfast, where we were served by these tall Senegalese waiters wearing their typical garb and speaking French with their funny French baby accent:
" Bonzu bonzu messie... Vulayvu le zu dorrange et le pudin au socolah?"...
So much for memories from long ago!
Thanks for reading

For me it must be JU. I flew them in 1987 LIN-SPU-LIN on a DC-9. At the time Yugoslavia still existed, and JU, the national Yugoslavian airline at the time, flew to Split (now Croatia). I've never flown them again.

No longer existing airline: Australian National Airlines (before the Ansett takeover), SYD-MEB-SYD, DC6. Then there was the whole Ansett group.

Still existing airline: BA 22-01-1995 BA551/BA283 FCO-LHR-LAX, B752/B744

HAHA for me,

Premiair A320, my first ever A320 flight. 1997 From CPH to Antalya, Turkey = Obviously never gonna fly them again, as they turne into Mytravel.

Air UK DC9 1995 CPH-LHR-CPH, again never gonna fly them again as they don't exist anymore

Varig MD11 1998 CPH-LHR-CPH, This service was discontinued, sadly, I loved Varig back in the 90ees, and I LOVED the MD11.

That is about it !

I split this one into two categories: defunct airlines and non-defunct airlines. As far as non defunct airlines go, I flew Continental IAH-LGA back in 1991 and haven't flown CO since.

In the defunct category, TWA takes home the prize. I last flew them back in 1986.

United. First and last time I flew them was October of 1995. I flew on a brand-new 777 ORD-DEN and returned on a DC-10-30. I fly them again in three days - so it has almost exactly been 14 years.  Smile ORD-LAX-HNL & HNL-SFO-ORD. I am excited!

I have flown UAX quite a bit, though, since then.

I am excited.

Qantas. But I changed that with some business class domestic flying recently on 737-400 (don't know the registration, don't care either), 737-800 (Yananyi Dreaming, VH-VXB) and a B767 (VH-OGV).

Love Qantas business class service (gracious service), hate the noisy old 737-400, but loved the B737-800 with their private 12 seat business cabin.  Smile

RE: What's Your Longest-since Airline?

The earliest I remember was a Dan Air flight to CAG. As for an airline that is still around, has to be Singapore Airlines, which I last flew LHR-SIN-SYD in 1991.

Champion Air 727 from DEN-LAS in 1998. Sadly will never have the chance again. RIP Champion.

Texas International in July 1971, DAL-ABI/ABI-DAL (Legs 2 and 3 of an overall MKC-DAL-ABI roundtrip (BI on the MKC-DAL legs). I flew BI several times after that, though that was the last time I ever flew on Texas International. That July 1971 trip was also my first trip by plane, with my father. I still remember walking through the MKC terminal and being overwhelmed walking through DAL as a 7-year-old.

Eastern, 1987, when we moved from Connecticut to Alabama. I was three years old at the time. It's been almost exactly 22 years.

Still here: AA. My last flight with them was in January 2002, ORF-ORD-SJC-DFW-ORF. It was my first post-9/11 flight, and my first 757 and ERJ145 ever. Also my first AA Eagle flight. And my first time spending the night on the floor at O'Hare.

Kaput: Eastwind, 1996. GSO-MCO-GSO for a job interview. I didn't get the job. My last 732 flight.

It's been 27 years since I was on UA mainline, although I flew United Express DEN-GJT-DEN in 2003. I consider those to be Mesa and Air Wisconsin flights, but since I checked in at a UA desk I didn't count it above AA.

My biggest gap would be Air Pacific when last I flew with them from BNE-NAN-LAX on July 1999.

On the same day I connected on an Alaska Airlines flight and I haven't flown them since.
