What Happens If Bags Get Delayed - Multi Flights?

Mon Sep 07, 2009 6:41 am

i hope this is the right forum as i really need advice on this potential problem.

i am flying MAN-HEL-BKK in a few weeks. i only have 1 hour change in HEL and usually the aircraft is parked at the far end of the airport therefore it takes time to get back to the terminal.

i have used HEL on several times when flying onto tallinn and on 4 occassions my bags got delayed in HEL and came on a later flight to Estonia.

when i get to BKK i have a flight on a seperate booking (go through customs and check back in) onto Ko Samui approx 3 hours later.

if my bag does not turn up from HEL then i assume it will be a day later i assume and i will already be in Ko Samui.

1. will the baggage get sent down to Ko Samui airport via the different airline? i don't think it would as the ticket was booked seperately to the Finnair flights
2. will the lost baggage keep my bag for 6 days till i get back?
3. should i therefore pack most of my clothes in my hand baggage?

thanks for your help

I was wondering the same thing. Although there is one difference. You aren't just having multiple cities, but multiple itineraries. I am flying a 3 city trip on the same airline, so they'll know where I'm at.

I'm flying AUS-DFW, then 2 nights later DFW-MCO, then 5 nights later MCO-STL, then 2 night later STL-AUS. All on AA. 2 football games and a trip to Disney. Whee!
Firings, if well done, are good for employee morale.

You could see if on Check in at Manchester they could tag your bags through to your final destination for you. They might not be able but you could always ask. That way the airlines will know your final destination.

I recently flew JFK-CDG-JNB with AF and then JNB-LVI with SA on two tickets. The AF counter staff at JFK interlined my bags and checked them through to LVI. It worked fine.

First step would be to see if the two carriers have an interline agreement. If not, you might have a challenge. Though my experience is that airlines are good about sending the bag to catch up to you wherever you are expected to be when they locate the bag (sadly I know this first hand).
