I miss it very much. Growing up in MO, there always seemed to be red and white over my house.

TWA's employees fought to the end to save their company, and the day of AA's takeover broke a lot of hearts. I won't even talk about AA's now abandonment of STL, you all know how I feel about that.

Thanks, Sept. 11, for the post, you are a gentleman and scholar.

I only flew TWA once back in the early 90's. DCA-STL-SEA and return. If I remember correctly they still served a nice little snack on both segments and drinks (alcohol) was free. If they were still around today I don't think there would be any difference to the rest of the legacy carriers....luggage fees, BOB, etc. and would constantly be compared to the "good ol' days". So maybe it's not so bad they aren't around any longer, people tend to remember the good and not the bad

Me personally? not in the slightest. I'm pretty sure my first unaccompanied flight was on TWA, but I remember the aircraft (707) much more than the airline. In more recent years it was just another airline as far as I was concerned.

I flew them on a couple of occasions between San Jose and Little Rock. It was a combination of MD 80s and 727s, which made the trips interesting. I recall sitting back in their 727 one time right next to the engine!
Other than those trips, I did not fly them much, but I most certainly miss them as I do all other airlines that went under. It doesn't make spotting any interesting to see the same tails over and over. Those were happier times when I could go to SJC for 1 hour in the afternoon and spot AA, TWA, DL, SWA, NW, CO, RenoAir, UA, HP and a wide range of aircraft (including the 777 to NRT).
I wish that every single airline that went down under still existed  Smile

Same here....I remember starting with them in 1996 as the 747s left the fleet, I managed to get on one of the last flights. At all of the stations I worked at for them, in SLC, STL, LAX, JFK, and ATH before they shut it down, everyone I ever worked with was amazing and I do miss the family there. Good times had by all as we believed we could do the impossible and rebuild the airline. We were so close to doing so...

Absolutely yes, I really miss this beautiful airline, I used to see most of its fleet at JFK, LAX and LHR. the 741, 742, L1011, 762, MD80. and it was a pleasure flying with them.

One of the U.S.A. airlines symbol. too bad its not around anymore.

First TWA flight ever was on an L-1011 on SLC-DEN-JFK, then a 747SP to ATH. I loved TWA dearly, it was a very sad day when it was finally gone.

Why would we miss TWA? They were a dieing carrier like PanAm, Eastern, Braniff... All are either run into the ground by poor management or taken over by a carrier wanting to expand and place others out of business.

Flew them a few times domestic but do not recall the flights as my brother and I were to young.

I miss it. First time I flew TWA was MCI-ORD-PHL with PHL-STL-MCI on the return, all on 707s. Growing up in KC in the 70s, even down on the south side, you always knew someone whose dad worked at the maintenance base. Through the years, I got to fly on TWA's 707s, 727s, 757s, L1011s and DC-9s/MD80s. I think I'll always miss TWA and Braniff.

I miss them. I flew on TW a lot back in the day. I lived in St.Louis for ten years. I miss seeing STL as a busy hub. I hate seeing RJ after RJ there. My dad really misses TW. He is still a busy business traveler, out of STL, and at one time he could fly non stop on a mainline plane to just about anywhere he needed to go out of STL. Today he has to make stops and many times he flies on RJs when not long ago it was an MD-80 or 727, maybe even an L1011.

Yup, even growing up in Kansas City in the late 90's I knew people who had parents/family who worked out at MCI. I really miss being able to catch a glimpse of a 747 in Kansas City. Never really flew a lot on TWA (maybe a couple of times, on a 727, IIRC), but they were some what of the hometown favorite.

If anyone ever gets a chance, visit the Airline History Museum there in downtown Kansas City. They've got lots and lots of TWA stuff, and a DC-3, Martin 404, L1049 Constellation and soon to be an L1011.

Sure do, can't help it. . . raised in Kansas City, so TW was our "home town" airline for years. . . my first flight was out of MKC on a TW Connie. And as an adult flew them almost exclusively for work and leisure. (Thank you again AA for taking all my TW miles!) A true legacy airline for anyone in this area. . .

Corporate Headquarters in KC for years (until move to NYC and STL)
Flight Attendant Academy in KC suburb - Overland Park
Main overhaul base at MKC and then MCI
Hub for years and then always "focus city" in later years.
Major crew base for many years.

A great loss to the metro area when they went away. . . miss them still.  crying

I miss them. My first flights, and my interest in aviation, were on the wings of their red striped Mad Dogs doing SJC-STL and back to see family and MO. My last flight with them was in 1996, but I do remember it. I wish I could of flown them a few more times.

Not only was it great to fly the legacy carriers but flying back then was a pleasant adventure, something to brag about to your friends when you were young...nothing like seeing the giant TWA characters on that big red field on her 747's. Soon only to be recognized by tragedy. Eastern Hockey sticks, Pan am globes...no fences at JFK...those were the days. Below is what is left of N133TW...I just cut her up last week...
Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 683 File size: 256kb
Lower 747 rudder segment...

As I cut into these rudder components I wonder just how many continents she has flown over, whom she may have carried...If I had a museum I'd keep every component!  cry

TWA was my favorite airline. I flew them exclusively in the late '80's and 90's. It was a very sad day when American took them over. I loved the easy connections through St. Louis. Now, I have to go through OHare or DFW. Not fond of either one of those airports!
