Why Are Chinese Airlines Liveries So Boring?

Mon Jan 25, 2010 12:37 pm

Why are the liveries of the 3 big ones ( China Southern, China Eastern and especially Air china) so uninspiring? They seem outdated, just an evolution of the colour scheme of CAAC ( Civil Aviation Administration of China ). Is there a possibility that their livery change one day? Or will they keep these boring liveries and go on creating special liveries like China Eastern's recent Expo 2010?

I think they're very nice especially Southern and Air China. Nice colours and dignified.

There are too many "arty" liveries these days - they look silly.

Air France hasn't changed its livery since the 1970s (yes I do not consider the recent "change" a change). Is it outdated? American Airlines hasn't changed its for decades. Is it outdated? People say "eurowhite" is boring.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Communism doesn't really lend itself to being avant garde, really...

AA livery = timeless, they should -never- change it.

I hope you're not including Dragonair in your sweeping condemnation of Chinese liveries. They have had some awesome colours. Even their standard red on white, whilst understated, looks graceful and stylish.

I'm sure along the same lines cost efficiency becomes a factor. More paint = more money = more weight = more fuel burn.

They do let a few slip (shameless plug)

Its probably a culture thing to a degree. I do remember reading in an airline publication that more austere liveries were prefered by Chinese people as it showed professionalism and dependability.

The new Aeroflot scheme looks pretty good to me:

I do like the China Southern a lot, but not Air China. I actually prefer the China Eastern or Shenzhen liveries to that one.

That's China Airlines from Taiwan. They and EVA Air have interesting liveries, although some may find the EVA green a bit harsh on the eyes.

And even then, that's a special livery; I do really like China Airlines' standard livery, though. It's very nice.

EVA's green used to be less harsh, but then again, it used to just be a green line and not a green underbelly.

I agree Air China´s oldfashioned communist era scheme is crap. Especially the colours are awful. Dull grey and a "broken" blue, with a tail logo that does not fit to the rest, not in style and not in colour. Very poor for a flag carrier, maybe the worst livery of any large flag carrier worldwide.
Not all Chinese liveries are boring though, some even quite nice, like Shenzhen Airlines or the new Hainan livery. China Southern is ok. The majority of the rest is a bit on the dull and oldfashioned side though.

Last I checked, China still IS a communist country  Wink

But I do agree that the Air China livery is looking rather drab. A predominantly white tail with a logo is poor design combination.
