Beverages You Only Drink When Flying

Thu Mar 04, 2010 1:20 am

Does anyone else have a certain beverage or beverages that you frequently order when flying, but never drink when you're on the ground?

I've got two: First, cranberry juice. I never buy the stuff at home, but I often order it on planes. Sometimes I just want fruit juice, am not in the mood for OJ, and cranberry juice is the only other choice that appeals to me. I also find the tartness seems to have a soothing effect if my throat is feeling a little scratchy due to the dry air.

The other is ginger ale. This I usually get if I'm in the mood for soda, but don't want something with caffeine in it. I've also heard ginger ale can help with motion sickness, so I'll also order it if the captain mentions it might be a bumpy flight.

Yes, I only have a Gin and Tonic while flying. First, it seems reminiscent of the glory days of jet travel, of the 1960's. Second, if I am going to pay about the same price for a small wine or an entire gin and tonic, I find I get more for my money with the gin and tonic.

Gotta say I used to have Jones Soda on Alaska however now that they got rid of it I will have to find a new drink.

Cranberry juice here too.

I always forget to ask what brand they use (they all seem to use the same). It's great, maybe I would drink it at home

I always drink Cranberry juice as well. Never buy it often at home although I get it from time to time. Since I was a kid I have always gotten cranberry juice. It reminds me of my first flights and all the experiences I had flying when I was young. Im surprised Im not the only one that does this!

Same here! I am disappointed that AS dropped the Jones contract. Their Pure Cane Cola was like no other and I LOVED it!

For me, I normally get a Pepsi or Ginger Ale depending on my mood.

+1 on the ginger ale. I like the stuff, but not enough to buy it at home. For some reason, habit I guess, it's my standard order on a plane.

suprised no one has mentioned the infamous

"BLOODY MARY"

BA do a great version from scratch, while AA & SK who both use Mr & Mrs T's Bloody Mary mix also score high on the list.

The thing I don't like about drinking Cranberry juice on planes is that it seems to always be Cran-Apple juice...give me the straight stuff, please! Don't muck it up by adding apple juice...if I want apple juice, I will order apple juice, gosh knows they have enough of it.

To be honest, my answer - cola of any kind. I don't normally drink the stuff, but sometimes I will get a Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi on a flight.

Nope, I just drink the regular things I enjoy.

A study recently looked at why people do this. It's findings showed that your taste receptors alter with altitude, so when flying you're suddenly thrown into a different set of sensations and tomato juice and other things we only drink in the sky begin to have the same appearance as orange juice.

My dad also has the Cranberry Juice fetish in the air an he will happily add some vodka to it. I dont like cranberry in the air or on the ground.

As for me I never drink Dr. Pepper on the ground. I tried it once and I didn't like it and one day (i dont know what possessed me) I ordered it on AA and I liked it. It might have been in my head. I still do not drink it on the ground and have actually made it a small goal   . If I am offered I refuse. I plan on drinking Dr. Pepper on every flight.

They did? Darn, I'm disappointed too. I guess I haven't flown on AS in over a year, but I was planning on going to Seattle some time this summer and was looking forward to some Jones Soda on AS.

-Sour Cherry juice on TK.
It is really hit or miss to find it at the local grocery stores here in NYC.

-How about cheap wine!
I would never buy that stuff they give you on coach, recently I saw them serving out of a carton box.

Ditto on the Bloody Mary - never drink it on the ground, although it's the first thing I order in the air. Recently switched to "with just plain tomato juice" instead of Mr.&Mrs.T. mix - way too salty for my taste! (ever read the nutrition label on that stuff? something like 1500mg of sodium : a couple days' worth of salt!)

That's funny but reading the previous replies I realize I will easily drink a ginger ale when flying, don't know why but I rarely buy some on the ground.

The only drink I've never had on the ground is a Singapore Sling...

Yep! Back to Coke effective this past Monday. (3-1-2010)

You can actually order Jones Soda directly from Jones online.

Might not be much of a difference but I never buy any English Tea at home nor drink it outside (unless it's provided at a buffet restaurant or something) and I always drink it while in the air. At home, I drink Chinese Tea. Does that count? =) Also on the plane I'll frequently ask for orange juice. This seems the most common drink I'd request if someone asks me if there's something to drink (or once again, in a buffet restaurant! haha). I rarely buy a carton of orange juice to enjoy it at home.
One day I will fly around the world!

Back when NW had Iron Range Amber Lager I would drink that. I never had it anywhere, but when flying NW. James Paige Brewery, like NW, is nolonger around.

Canada Dry Ginger Ale for me. I never drink it at any other time but I do drink it on planes if they have it.

Not all Targets carry the Pure Cane Cola (Colorado and Arizona does not have them in the stores), but the other flavors, yes. You can also find it at Costco in Washington State.

Minute-Maid Cran-apple.
Ginger Ale.
Liquor mix (I don't drink alcohol on the ground).
Oriental-style Tea- Asian carriers like to thrust this at you. It's much better than English black tea served in the States.

Ditto on the Cranberry cocktail in the air for me, but never on the ground. Either that or i'll just have coffee. If I am flying HA F class interisland for business trips, I will have the iced green tea they serve, but I have never bought it on the ground.

It's obvious from reading this thread (and from watching people order it on all of my flights) that ginger ale is ultra-popular on planes. But, I can't remember the last time I bought a 2 liter bottle of Canada Dry or Schweppe's Ginger Ale.

I've always thought it was so funny/weird that ginger ale is so popular on planes but not really anywhere else. At least in my world.

I think you can still get Schweppe's Ginger Ale 2 liter bottles in the stores, but I don't know about Canada Dry...

Yeah I hear you, you can get both of those brands of Ginger Ale in the stores but I just think it's funny how few people actually buy them compared to how many people order Ginger Ale while inflight.

Two words: Ginger ale.

It just tastes better in the air than on the ground.
