You seem exceptionally worried about the potential substitution! While I am obviously flying LHR-CDG-LHR merely for the 380, I can't say I am worried...

What will you say if they come up with a 321 on the day of flight though?
If you are doing only the run it's allright I suppose.

I have two other flights to CDG and back that I am paying for and those are not cheap this is why I don't want to get a 321.

I am hopeful that on 12 June we will not get one as this is launch date and the press will be there.

If they sub it for an A32S then I can just cancel, I think Nighthawk said that this is a special tariff and we can get a refund.

Well, I understand your personal situation what with flying NCE-CDG-NCE...

I might well cancel if that happens - see MIAspotter's comments below - but I am not going to worry about the possibility of it. Indeed, I don't really see the point of worrying about it - we cannot control it - but that's just me.

You are perfectly right about this.

I had no idea that the LHR legs could be refunded, in fact if the flights are only 3 Euros and the service chager 1 Euro the rest is taxes. Taxes are always refundable if the tickets are not used so we will get the major part of what we paid refunded in case of a 321.

I can then spend the day in Paris!

Thanks for this info akhmad. I agree that the meet up would still be a nice idea, but I am really keen to fly the A380. I haven't had a response to my e-mail yet. I would be up for finding another date, although I can't do June 12th....

Actually I think this is not correct. Although they promoted a A380 they clearly stated on the website that a aircarft substitution is possible. So sticking by the rules you have to accept the substitution, although it's a special offer for the A380. You may however refund unused taxes, see below.

This is not absolutely correct either. With Air France, the fuel supplement sticks to the same rules as the air fare. Which means that if the air fare is not refundable, like in this case, then the fuel supplement isn't either. However on this specific fare, it is only 10 EUR, so adding the air fare to this (3 EUR) makes everyhting but 13 EUR refundable, which is quite a lot. And also: on other routes they may be taxes (especially in the US) that are not refundable, too.

That said AF seems to be quite nice. They informed passengers by email about the substitution being well aware that passengers booked especially becuase of the A380. Allowing a free rebooking to any other A380-operated date shows two things:
a) That they didn't planned this and regret the need of changing on this specific date
and more important:
b) This is a signal that most of the other services should remain a A380.

Hope everyone affected by the change will find a solution that suits their needs.

Dont quote me on that! They are advertising the flight as being operated by an A380, and offering special fares specifically for this purpose. To change the aircraft would be false advertising, they would need to offer everyone a refund or rebook them (especially as an A321 would be massively oversold). Unless of course....

If it says so in the small print then they may not refund, but i'd like to see them defend that in court! "Fly an A380 for just £70 return* Small print: may not actually be an A380".

I see people referring to an A321 as a substitution for the A388 when it will be taken of the CDG-LHR-CDG route on a particular date due to whatever reason.

How are the chances that AF will replace the A388 with another widebody in case bookings are exceeding the A321 capacity? Especially as more and more people book a ticket and loads will exceed the A321 capacity, replacing the A388 with another widebody would seem more logical. Any thoughts on this?

Crossing the Channel in a B744/772 or A332 would be nice as well, although it will not be as thrilling as the A388!

Just to say things clearly:
I totally agree and understand that point. It's my opinion as well and I think Air France shall give people the opportunity to rebook, especially because they promoted this as an A380 flight.

Nevertheless I'm not convinced that by law they're obliged to do that. I'm not a law expert, but let's face it: Everyone is advertising with certain things, i.e. "we have the newest IFE", "fly our new flat seat business", "fly with Lufthansa on the A380 to Beijing". In the end, if you get the old business class, the old IFE or no IFE as all, if the A380 is substituted by a boring regular Airbus, well than you will not be able to cancel free of charge...

But you're absolutely right, one can expect Air France to do the best of this unlucky situation which they most likely didn't planned. This can already bring bad press now, and make it even worse if they don't offer any free rebooking. Therefore they are doing the best of the situation I guess. As you stated, I guess they don't have the choice anyway since indeed they must be massively oversold on that specific flight

By the way, thanks to the guy who posted the hint with the seat reservation. Just made mine. Although I'm flying on one of the rather "not popular" dates (15 aug), the upper deck was already full on the way back from LHR to CDG. I will try to lower deck on this segment I guess....

On the July 14/15 flights upper deck is already filling up quickly as well! Luckely I secured window seats on the upper deck for both flights!

- I have recieved no information from AF about the change in aircraft type, and have not yet had a repliy to my complaint over a change of aircraft type based on their advertising.

A call to the reservations has resulted in a free re-booking to another date of an A380 operated flight, I'm now booked to fly 3/7.

All in all, not impressed wit the way AF have handled the change to something they are advertising.

The Air France website clearly stated the type could potentially change for operational reasons, a clause that's been mentioned here and one you should have considered before booking- its just the risk.

Air France did not email people about the change, the emails received by the poster above are because they contacted AF first. Although I do appreciate the lack of a reply is annoying.

At least they understand the plight and have rebooked you free of charge. That is good customer service.

Out of curiosity I just checked the CDG-LHR-CDG 12 June flights status on the French AF web site.

There is no more possibility of booking them for 80 EUR the return ticket price is now 209 EUROS all taxes included. The flights still exist as A380 with the original flight numbers but the ticket cost has gone up.

AF have covered themselves legally. Public relations is another thing, to hype up something then change it is always going to cause bad feeling but AF have done the right thing in letting people change free of charge, had they not have offered this then it would have been very bad form.

I'm only travelling because it's the A380. I'd normally Eurostar it to Paris. If they change the plane I'll have to cancel or rebook.

Paris was not part of my travel plans this year.

I just received a call (and email) from AF informing me about the change. Now it's all up to my work schedule.

Would be great if a free rebooking would work. I was rather surprised AF realized the purpose of my booking and even gave me a call...

Welcome to A.net Luxair.

For those doiing the trip on 12 June, I hope you are all interested in a possible aircraft tour, all cabins and flight deck.

I will have very little time after we land back at CDG so I am going to place the request for before take-off LHR-CDG flight or maybe other depending on them. I hope AF will accept to give us a tour. Maybe we can have some of our own items signed by the captain?

Would anybody have a contact email address at Air France so I can send a A.net group tour request?

Maybe those who have made contacts with AF for the 12 July cancellations can help. Thank you.

As I’ll arrive into CDG at 1505 and leave the next day at 1005, I'm going to stay at the airport.

While I don’t take photos or registrations, I certainly watch the activity. With this in mind, the Ibis* seems a relatively good and inexpensive option. Does anyone have any recommendations for this place viewing-wise, bar those in the following link?

I don't suppose any A.netter has an email address specifically for Ibis' CDG Airport/Terminal hotel? Their website has a phone number, but no email address (which is unsurprising).

After a few phonecalls and a visit to the AF desk at Zurich, I am now rebooked for July 5th. AF kindly agreed to change my separate MLH-CDG-MLH ticket free of charge, which really surprised me.

I'm sorry to miss those of you who I would have seen otherwise, but this offer was too good to refuse.

How will we all meet before we go on the flights?

I will be flying into CDG some time around 8.00 AM and plan to go and say hi to Concorde F-BVFF weather perrmitting.

For those of us doing the day return I am not sure if we will be able to stay air side once we are landed at LHR or not.

There again there is another Concorde to see only she is a bit far distant by BA engineering and under a shed so I doubt she will be visible this time around. It will have to wait until my next visit to LHR at Farnborough Air Show time.

That's a good question... we can either meet at the check-in area (for the A380 flight) and then walk to say hi to Concorde, or we can meet directly at the Concorde site (which I dunno how to get to)

I will be staying at a hotel in Parc de les Expositions which is only 1 or 2 stops away from CDG on RER.

Regarding the aircraft tour Madame C. I think it will be good to contact AF PR directly and tell them we are a group of aviation enthusiasts who booked these flights to travel on the A380 and would like to have a tour of the aircraft either before departure or whilst in LHR or after landing back in CDG... It will help a lot if it is written in French...
