RE: Your First Flight...what Airplane And Airline?

Mon Aug 23, 2010 9:47 pm

Mine was in maybe 1977 or 78, on an American 727 TUS-ORD. TUS didn't have jetways then, so I'm sure we boarded by stairs. I think we may have used the rear stairs, but can't remember. I do remember getting stuck with eggs for breakfast as they were out of pancakes.

We switched to United for the ORD-MBS portion of the trip, on a 732. I was 4 or 5 at the time.

either 1969 or 1970 CO 707 or 720 LAX to the old Kansas City Airport. I remember being dressed up in horrible tight fitting clothes and the bright side was a bag of tootsie rolls . age 5 or 6 I am pretty sure there was lounge seating sideways on board.

By the way, it is the only A300 B1 version to have entered commercial service (and one of only two B1 built, the other one being the prototype).

Flying the 777 for the first time was very exciting, especially after having watched "21st Century Jet" on PBS with my dad. It seemed so incredibly modern -- the interior looked 20 years ahead of anything else I'd flown (it is amazing to compare the difference between the 767 and 777 with that between the 777 and 787, in terms of interior styling). And it was the first airplane I'd ever seen with PTVs. Along with being my first time to Europe, etc. -- quite a memorable flight.

The 741 didn't excite me (today it would be the reverse) but the return was also quite interesting as it was in the midst of a BA cabin crew strike. (Sound familiar?   ) I had 777 fever and half-hoped that we would wind up on a UA 777 instead (this was long before the days of AA 777s on LHR-JFK) but no, I was stuck with the "dull" 747 classic -- which turned out to be my last 747 classic flight, while I have flown the 777 many times since. Funny how things change! Once we got on board I enjoyed the flight, complete with afternoon tea (with BA-branded clotted cream) in Y.

Quoting WesternA318 (Reply 46):
My first trip was SLC-DEN-JFK-ATH on TWA's L-1011 from SLC to DEN and onto JFK, then a 747SP, (yes, the short squat 747) to ATH.

Nice! I never had the chance to fly the SP, unfortunately, with TWA or anyone else. Did get to fly TWA's 747-100 though, along with others.

Now that is what I call a rare aircraft! So far I think you have the best first flight, in sheer uniqueness at least.

I do indeed have fond memories of my first flight (SQ, in 1998, from MAA - SIN - LAX) on their 747, and I enjoy recalling it.

However, haven't we had numerous threads on this topic  .

Somewhere, I think, I still have the logbook they used to give kids to record their flights in. Some memories are, departed on 06 with considerable thrust from those Conways, flew over lots of flooded fields from previous rain, visiting the cockpit. My brother being first to step into America, because I was first to step on the plane. Passing the TWA terminal at JFK and passing an Olympic B707, City of Knossos, SX-DBC. On the return, my (very nervous flier) mother convinced the aircraft wasn't climbing on take off from JFK, even though VC10s weren't lacking in climb performance.

Mine was Paris to Heathrow. British Airways B757. I knew you had to go fast down the runway - but was amazed at how fast you actually went - especially the accelleration.

My wife was s**tting herself. I was by the window. We took off and I was trying to comfort her. I looked out of the window as thougt "good god" as I'm scared of hights. Now I absolutely love it.

Well my first flight ever was on an old Tarom AN-24, the engine looked like it was on recentrly on fire and black with smoke because of its side exhaust.

It was from Constanta, Romania (CND) to Cluj Napoca, Romania (CLJ) in I think 1987. The most remarkable thing was that once we passed the across the Carpathian mountains and started the descent, they turned off 1 engine for about 20 minute... conserve fuel??? not a clue, but everyone seemed to be OK with it... We abviously made it OK since I am still taling about it...

I can beat that slightly. My first flight was in the summer of 1955 or 1956 (not sure which) at age 8 or 9, Edmonton - Calgary, Trans-Canada Air Lines Vickers Viscount 724 (thus my user ID). Airport at Edmonton then was YXD (then called the Municipal Airport, now City Centre Airport) as YEG 20 miles south didn't open until 1959.

I remember that flight quite clearly. It was probably more memorable since I was an unaccompanied minor.

Air Canada DC-8 YYZ-YUL, February, 1970, as a 6-month old with my Mother. The 'stewardesses' made a fuss over me and Mom carried me off the plane, wrapped in a grey wool AC blanket, which she still has somewhere. (Of course, I have no memory of this - !)

The earliest I remember was flying YYZ-BUF/ROC-EWR in the early 1970s on Allegheny Airlines 727s & DC-9s to visit my Grandparents in New Jersey. We stepped off at ROC and I remember looking down the fuselage at the #1 engine that was still running. I guess the EWR we know today was still pretty new back then - just went through it this past Monday & couldn't believe how tired it now looks...

My first flights were when I was less than a year old. So naturally I have no memory of them. But my parents of course remember, and it was in 1987, a NW DC-10-40 routing MSP-PHX. My only DC-10 ride.

The first flight that I do remember was again MSP-PHX. This time it was 1994, and I'm 99% sure the flight down was a 757. I received a 757 card and NW wings that you pin to your shirt. I still have that and the ticket stub somewhere. Where my memory fades is on the way back. I feel that the plane type back was different and it was in the old NW Orient scheme. However I don't have confirmation for any of that, and unfortunately BTS.gov stats didn't start till 1995.   I may never figure it all out.

My first flight was on Continental between SJC and LAX...I THINK in either a 737-100 or -200, although I was only 4 or 5 at the time (would have been 1985 or '86). Only time I've ever flown CO. I've since flown countless times between the S.F. Bay Area and the L.A. area (usually between SJC and LAX, but also BUR and ONT once, and sometimes out of SFO) on AA, QQ, and later WN (and a few times on UA, a DL/Skywest EMB-120, and even TWA once; got to fly from LAX to SFO on an L-1011). I was enrolled in the AAdvantage program at age 10, and except the first one, just about all of those flights were as an unaccompanied minor.

First (and only) domestic flight outside of California was an N7 757 SFO-LAS-DFW in 2002. I was flying out to buy a car and drive it back here, so a one-way flight with a suitcase full of tools (especially so soon after 9/11) meant the TSA guys were VERY interested in me.

Probably mundane compared to some of the other stories, but it was exciting to a kid who REALLY loved/loves aviation

June 1994, Heathrow-Edinburgh and back on a BA 757. Shall be very sad when the last one is retired. My first international flight was Stansted-Dublin on an Aer Lingus BAC 1-11 in April 1997 (actually I think it was leased in as the plane was all white) and my first longhaul was in March 1999 to JFK on a BA 747 Classic (definately had a -100 on the way back but not on the way there if it was a -100 or a -200)

My first flight was in December 1989 from Darwin - Adelaide and return on either Ansett or Australian Airlines. This would have normally been either a 727-200 or a 737-300 flight but this during the Pilot strike when all sorts of aircraft from JAT 737's to Monarch 757's and even RAAF C-130's were all wet leased. I was only 18 months at the time so it could have been anything.

my next flights were in February 1994 from Darwin - Singapore - Phuket on a Qantas 767 from Darwin connecting onto a Silkair 737-300 to Phuket.

I don't remember my first flight, which was in 1992 I believe. It really sucks, because it was NYC-SXM.

The earliest flight I remember taking was EWR-YHZ on an Air Nova BAe-146-200 (operating for Air Canada). This must've been sometime between 1994 and 1996. I remember it really well: I was in row 7, which had no window. In those days, cockpit visits for children took place while at cruising altitude. The pilot asked me to turn some knob five clicks to the right, and when I did that, the plane banked right! I guess it was the autopilot heading knob. I don't think I'll ever forget that flight... that was when I became a real enthusiast.

Quoting laddb (Reply 90):
Trip to see Mickey Mouse. I would have been happy not even going to the Magic Kingdom and just staying at the airport all week.

Ahh yeah,. the fun starts at the airport not at the destination, right?!

Wonderful Thread!!!!

My first flight was in 1993 at the age of 12 on an HP B732 TUS-PHX-SFO. I remember begging my dad for the window seat for the flight and spent the whole flight from the moment the time the wheels left the ground until we landed having a death grip on the arm rest. My dad and the flight attendants laughing at me until we landed in PHX. On the next leg same plane and crew and same seat I did not hold the arm rest but instead I ate my peanuts and had a soda and enjoyed the view out the window. Since then I've logged a good 250 flights and look forward to many more.

My first flight was in 1994 on an Aer Lingus 737 (dont know which model) flying from DUB to LHR. Dont remember too much about it as I was only 7. After the return flight I never flew again for another 10 years untill flying DUB-TLS in June 2004.

During my first ever job, an apprentice airframe technician at RAE Bedford. We were taken on a familiarisation flight, I didn't know what aircraft it would be until we got into work that morning .... here is the very bird:
