Airlines With Silly Names / Logos...

Tue Sep 07, 2010 9:01 am

Hi,

Logo's and names of airlines can be quite silly IMO. I.e. which marketing brainiac thought of the name 'Wizzair'? To 'whiz' means in slang to pee of course. At least one person (me) made that connection, so I'm sure more people did. Or the logo of FlyNiki: it's some kind of weird insect or mosquito... Why would you want people to identify your airline with something itchy or scratchy (haha)? Personally I am also not a big fan of all the 'Virgin' names. People got used to them now, but why would you call an airline after a woman who never had sex before? To associate it with sex so guys would fly it or what? Never got that. I'm sure there are more examples out there. Does anybody else know other puzzling names or logos?

Ciao!

I always thought Basiqair was a bit of a crappy name. I am happy to see the return of the HV name, although the "t" logo looks a bit like a dart board to me.

Maybe, but it's not the first definition of whiz that would cross my mind, which spends more time in the gutter than most. Now if they were called Wazzair then I would be in agreement.

Whiz will always mean "move rapidly" to me...

Me wonders too. Especially when they would operate in Brasil.

Can any of our Swiss friends explain why Switzerland has an airline called Baboo? Are they owned by DJ Bobo or Jane Goodall?

And while we are at it, "Darwin" is not really a good name for an airline, I mean, imagine, they ever get an award!

I think that will be a fly to be associated with FlyNiki  . So not too bad marketing, IMHO.

I'd also agree that FlyNIKI isn't bad at all.
And they are quite a good airline to boot.

One of the worst names has to be Volareweb.com. I mean, come on...

Hooters + BRA - Hahaha, good one!

Darwin and Baboo are good examples too.

But... The Austrians and Germans on the forum seem to like the itchy and stingy insect of FlyNiki... I still don't get it! Can you please explain what the genius about it is? Perhaps I get it too if you explain it, but... I think if the cleverness has to be explained, it is not clever at all. I mean, it is a company image / logo. That has to be clear immediately without requiring an explanation. Most travellers just vaguely see it and form an opinion in a split second. Like me: "FlyNiki has an insect as logo. Yuk." But please, enlighten me.

What about BMI Baby + baby as logo? I find that a very strange name / logo for an airline too. Aviation is a serious industry!!!

You're right, true, but... they do have a woman painted on the a/c, that's why!

I think it's sort of clever and lighthearted. Some of the classic airlines like American or airliners from dictatorial countries often have predator birds like eagles or condors as logos which makes their athmosphere a bit stern and militaristic. FlyNiki, and before that Valujet with their critter (ow I shoot myself in the foot by mentioning them) show with an insect that they are different, having a healthy level of self depreciation and don't take everything too seriously

Quoting DutchBoeing (Reply 9):

Same as above, a word joke on the song Be my baby, trying to make the airline different and cuddly, not something stuffy where you have to feel humbled that you are allowed on board.

But if you ask me about silly names, what about turkish Fly Air? Icaro (Ecuador) which had his wings burnt off in the sun rays?

I associate Wizz with wizzing, i.e., going very quickly, between one place and another. And as Wizz Air offers citizens of Central and Eastern Europe with the ability to fly to/from Western Europe, thereby travelling quickly, for frequently very little - in comparison to the previous times when airfares were typically very expensive - they can nowadays Wizz to/from Western Europe rather than taking slow, overland transportation.

I don't know if this works, but I spotted a TACV 757 at LIS yesterday and wondered, if you were flying them:

Would you say you were flying 'TAC-V' or something else??

That said, does anyone think using plain acronyms is boring and disingenuous?

How about KIWI? As Jay Leno once said:

"I can't imagine why Kiwi isn't doing well... Do you think it's the name? You name your airline after a bird that can't FLY? You just run down the runway?"

A fly in German is "Fliege" - "fliegen" means flying. Hope that explains it.

Niki uses the fly in the safety videos as well, again, extremely clever because that way people watch and listen. A bit moe on h sarcastic sie, Niki Laua gets on the nerves of some people sometimes as a F1 commentator and som would lik to have a fly-swat when he appears on TV.

Hi all,

Well I for one can't believe that no one has mentioned this yet, but if I am not completely bonkers, the Niki in FlyNiki was originally after its founder, Niki Lauda, who has someone has already mentioned is a self made man. I would have thought most Austrians if not German speakers in general would easily get that connection due to his fame or infamy.

With regards to TACV, this stands for Transportes Aereos de Cabo Verde or Cabo Verde Airlines in English. In the same way as TAP might seem stupid to some, to most of its passengers it makes perfect sense.

Regards,

QM001

Of course I know 'to Wizz' means to go very quick somewhere and that can be explained / is true, but it's about the association / connotation with the other wizz: whiz. I thought of it, so other must have too. If I was an airline exec and had to think of a new name for my airline, why would I choose something which has a double meaning? I would steer clear of that, as not to run the risk a Dutch aviation fan one day on a website called airliners.net compares my airline to piss!

You know, I STILL think Spanair's new logo is a bare ass. :b

In other news, the name 'L'avion' brought me memories of the French version of Fantasy Island, so every time I read about that airline, I always had the image of Tatoo shouting "L'avion! L'avion!" and running to the bell tower.

Remember, we had these threads before;
"T T Airlines", and Ankair with their logo making it look like "Wankair"...from Turkey.
Hey also the soon to be built airport between the two Black sea cities of Ordu and Giresun to be named "ORGI Airport", as weird sounding as the already existing "Batman Airport".

Guess these two better change names then...

"American"

noun
1 a native or citizen of the United States.
• [usu. with adj. ] a native or inhabitant of any of the countries of North, South, or Central America.
2 the English language as it is used in the United States; American English.

"Continental"

adjective
1 forming or belonging to a continent : continental Antarctica.
2 coming from or characteristic of mainland Europe : traditional continental cuisine.

In reference to Hooters, when the restaurant came to SLC, there was a news piece about it on tv. In all seriousness, the reporter (a young woman) was saying that the name, Hooters, came from the owl logo used. They actually did not know, it seems, the real reason for that name.

Southwest Airlines is a very successful airline, although the name is pretty much meaningless at this point with all the network expansion in the Northeast.

Yesterday I flew Atlantic Southeast Airlines from Detroit to Rochester... at least it was an Atlanta-based crew.

Air Wisconsin does a lot of flying for US Airways in the Northeast... according to Wikipedia, they only serve two destinations in Wisconsin.

I've never been too fond of the name Air Canada Jazz. I just think it's sort of awkward.

Any airline with "www", "fly" or ".com" in the name is the epitome of stupidity.

Also the nasty habit airlines have of using the term "express", which nowaday equates into "no service whatsoever".

My personal nightmare would be "www.airflydotcomexpress Airlines"
