UA 324 Cancelled 1-26-2011

Thu Jan 27, 2011 1:44 pm

I am trying to find out why UA 324, scheduled to depart KLAX on 1-26-2011 at 9:05 a.m., going to KIAD, was cancelled. I tried looking at flightstats.com and flightaware.com, but there's no reason given. And when I try to track the flight on United.com, it just says cancelled, but gives no reason. I don't know if it was a positioning issue, in light of last night's storm, but I figured this forum would be the place to find out!

Thanks,

Gene

Yeah, I know there was a storm yesterday. But there was rumor that the flight was scrubbed because UA wanted to consolidate passengers on a later flight. And, I don't know if the specific plane that was going to be used for the flight was stranded in DC, or if they kept it in LA for flight ops today (instead of it being diverted to ORD, for example).

Is there a way to track the tail number of the flight that was supposed to fly UA 324?

Thanks,

rumor

There's the keyword in your statement.

Being the armchair CEO that I am, I would say that it is more than likely WX.
It's 737s, 747s and 380s. Not 737's, 747's and 380's. Learn to use the apostrophe for crying out loud.

Even if the reason was lightly booked flights that could be consolidated, you will NEVER get that info from the airline, and no employee that wants to remain employed will tell you here. There was weather in DC, the flight was cancelled due to weather. It is that simple! Tracking a tail number will get you nowhere, either, as aircraft swaps happen all day every day for many reasons.

Same on Flightaware.

This is the view from my balcony (29 miles from IAD) at 4pm.

A good call on the part of the airline. Later flights allowed for some runway clearing at IAD.

International departures from IAD were still being dispatched after midnight, so few missed connections.

The Unimatic code says it was canceled for weather. In spite of what so many believe, it is really not advantageous for an airline to cancel a flight just to consolidate passengers. There are many variables that make canceling a flight a real pain. The crew needs to get to their next flight, the airplane has a routing planned out for days that will need to be adjusted, the aircraft may have a maintenance opportunity that will now have to be re-planned, etc. etc. So, nice rumor, but like most rumors, completely factually false.

Personally, IMO the airlines should be required to give that info to the passengers and be subject to audit, this way they airlines can't hide cancels behind other issues that are in their control and thus avoid compensating passengers accordingly.

Just my opinion though.

Airlines don't cancel flights for reasons that are "in their control." The whole point of a cancellation is that something is no longer in their control and they no longer have any choice but to cancel. I'd explain why again, but it is said perfectly right here:
