30 Hrs @AMS Transfer, What About Bags?

Fri Jul 22, 2011 8:07 pm

Hi everyone,
I have a 30 hrs. layover in AMS (need to meet some friends for dinner).
-Can I ask KLM to check my bags all the way through?
-Will they be on my flight 30 hours later or will they travel to final destinations earlier?

Thanks,

If it's a single ticket with a long transfer time, you check your bags and not see them in AMS.
Of course, 30h is a long time, and while they should be on the same connecting flight as you, there's a chance they nay be forgotten. They will never be sent early though.

Yes, single ticket. Why would you think about them being forgotten?
That is of course worrisome.

Unlike some other airports, AMS has a fully automated baggage sorting and storage system.
I think it was magazine "Airports of the World" who ran a feature article about it recently (actually might be the current issue).
Apart from several temp-hold areas, they also have a fully automated high-level storage area.

With this 30-hour connection I would NOT be worried that your bags will not be on your continuation flight.

OTOH; are you sure that you prefer to have no access to your luggage during this 30 hour stay ?
Single ticket or not: You should be able to check your bags to AMS only, if you wish !

Will NOT travel earlier.

In my experience, you can ask (if the check-in agent doesn't before you) if you can tag your bags only to AMS. I have done stuff like this several times...i.e. an overnight 15 hour layover on IST-LHR-ORD and I was easily able to have BA simply check my bag to LHR so I had it in my hotel overnight, then re-check it the next morning to ORD.

If you just got one, I'd claim it and recheck. If there's more than one or it's particularly unwieldy, I'd say the risk is small enough to check it through. AMS is one of the last places I'd worry about losing a bag.

There are baggage lockers in AMS public area (at Schiphol Plaza), so then you can control the whole situation yourself. You receive them in AMS, put them in locker for 30hrs when you go in town, and check the bags in again on the onward flight

I wasn't aware of the automated system - I had visions of a pile of bags waiting, and one with the longest transfer at the bottom   As has been shown above by others, it appears you will have nothing to worry about.

I don't know about the bags, but I've been to AMS before and that is the right airport to have a long layover at.
