How Good / Bad Was The Old Interflug?

Tue Nov 22, 2011 2:55 pm

I must confess I am fascinated by the German airlines, including the former flagship of the GDR Interflug. How was it perceived ? Friendliness, punctuality, safety record ... I recently learned that even if the Wall times there was an special bus service from West Berlin to Schönfeld airport. It seems that since Interfluf flew to some places not easily reachable from Tegel or Tempelhof, some West berliners were flying Interflug !

I never flew them but always wanted to take their IL-18 flight from Berlin to Hanoi via what seemed like a 1,000 intermediate stops.

Flew Interflug in 1981 from Cairo to East Berlin on my way to Warsaw on there IL62. I remember that it was a great flight service was excellent somebody told me that the F/A were trained by SAS.

The first time I flew with Interflug - Berlin to Cyprus - getting to SXF was interesting. The airport experience at SXF was a bit hairy, but not unpleasant and everyone was very polite, even the security blokes.

The flight itself was one of the best flights I've ever had. All economy, with excellent service and too much food. An f/a got mildly blasted by another for offering me my main course in German rather than English.

The odd thing that my (American) partner noticed was that the Captain came on the p/a a couple of times and would tell us where we were - but only in English, not in German.
