Buying Plane Stuff In Airports

Sun Feb 19, 2012 12:42 am

About 6-7 years ago, IAD had a neat gift shop where you could buy all kinds of plane-related merchandise: coffee mugs, posters, decals, even 1:100 and 1:200 models. Unfortunately, it closed down.

Any other airports out there that have such a shop? I always managed to come away with an extra small bag from IAD, would like to do the same at another place!

AMS used to have an excellent shop with a wide selection of models and aviation magazines etc. It shut down 3 or 4 years ago. However, I noticed when passing through AMS a couple of months ago that a new shop has opened fairly recently but the selection was much smaller than the old one.

AMS has a great place outside customs/immigration in the arrivals area. It's the place with the cabin mock-up of the F-28, and the 777(?) engine. Neat little store.

There is also a bogey of the main landing gear, again from a DC-10.

BHX used to have a great shop with a viewing area, but it had to go with the recent refurbishment and hasn't been replaced to my knowledge.

IIRC there's a decent one on the arrivals level of MAN (may have been another UK airport though), of course nothing compared to the selection at the spotter's park shop!

BWI had one in the observation area

MUC had a fantastic one as well

Don't know if either are still open.

Surprise no one has said LIS yet, great shop by the arrivals area, it's worth going there if you fly to/from LIS.

Yes there is a small shop in the arrivals level of Terminal 1 at MAN which is essentially a small version of the one at the aviation park thats run by the same people.

There was one at LHR many years ago, but that has since turned into ARD at Hillingdon. They also have a branch at what used to be the visitor centre.

Same with LGW. Seem to remember there being a good shop on the viewing terrace there too.

HNL has a shop in the Hawaiian Airlines terminal. It's located mid-terminal across from the Starbucks and has all kinds of aviation stuff including desktop models from Boeing.

FRA has a Lufthansa World Shop near one of the entrances to the B gates, it seels mainly luggage but also some model aircraft. Little HAJ also has one, it's by the entrance to the Visitors' Terrace IIRC.

There is one at EMA that sells a lot of old memorabilia, as well as models, DVDs, books etc, but for a number of reasons (not least the attitude of the guy that runs it) I refuse to set foot in there any more.

The one on the car park at MAN is a very strange one, like a little cabin in the corner of the car park!

As PlymSpotter said BHX had a decent shop on the old viewing terrace, but sadly now long gone.

I believe LHR used to have one on its viewing terrace as well before it closed, as well as LGW on theirs (is the terrace at LGW even open any more?).
Next flight: Feb 2012 - BHX-CPH-BHX - SK MD87 / CRJ900

USAir(ways) used to company stores at some of the hub airports. DCA and PIT come to mind.

Long Beach used to have an adjacent pilot shop with many airplane do-dads.

LIS (a few years ago) had a good shop. Not sure if it is still there.

As a sidenote, the DC-9 nose section in KL livery in the shopping plaza at AMS began life as a DC-9-32 with DL in 1968 (N3333L). Sold to Ozark in 1980 (N929L) and inherited by TWA when they acquired Ozark in 1986.

I was going to mention LIS, but I dont know of the specific shop you speak of. Only because I dont go there often, of course.

I bought a nice shirt at duty free with the old school TAP logo of yore. Very nice find!

The LGW viewing area closed about maybe a good 7-8 years ago! It was a good spot but eventually pier 2 got in the way of seeing the runway clearly. The shop was quite expensive too, I remember getting a small aircraft which cost £30!

Anyway would be nice to see GIP build a new viewing area in a different location nearer the runway as LGW is one of the least spotter friendly airports in the world.

Yeah, same with LHR. Even the visitor centre is gone now, although ARD do have a (very small) shop on the corner.

Ahh yes I use to go to the LHR visitor centre quite a bit, was a great place! I don't go up to LHR much and last time I did go there I was surprised about the place had gone. Such a shame, I hope they come to their minds and give 2 of the most busiest airports in the world a spotters viewing place. Is that shop still there or...?

Where abouts is the shop someone mentioned in HKG?

I've never seen it there. Any reference to a nearby gate lounge or landmark would be great as I'll be there in a couple of weeks and would like to check it out!

Thanks in advance.

I think the shop is still there. As your facing the building, with your back to the airport, its on the far left hand side at the back - the complete opposite end to where the job centre is (or was?). Its very small though.

I did notice there was a small grandstand set up in the car park a few weeks ago for viewing, although it wasn't very big.

Yes I remember it being quite small, I found the shop by accident actually.

Oh right, do you think they will make it any bigger or will they keep it the same do you think? I might have to venture up to LHR again, been ages since last time I was there.

It's not exactly in the airport, but just a short drive away, YVR has Aviation World. It's fantastic, because it also sells all kinds of pilot supplies. There's hardly anything you can't find in there!

Does anybody know if there is a shop at ORD somewhere? there used to be one under the Hilton, but it has been gone for a while, I have always hoped that another one opens at ORD.
