Ever Know Anyone Who Took A Trip On A Zeppelin?

Tue Jul 10, 2012 3:59 am

Hi!

A few years ago I went on a Ryanair day trip to a place called Fredriecshafen in Germany. I didn't know about it but when I got there I found an old Zeppelin airport which was very art-deco which they had turned into a museum. I went there for a few hours and I got really interested. It seemed like a very elegant way of travelling and they had even built a replica of the passenger part of an airship and a bit of the interior structure too which you could climb into and walk around. They showed the routes and places they flew to and I think if I remember right you could fly to the USA and Brazil and stuff from Freidricshafen. The only other time I had seen what an old Zeppelin was like was in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

So has anyone here ever known anyone in their family or friends or anything who had taken one of these airship trips. Did they say what it was like? Any details or stories would be most interesting.

Many thanks,

P.

Edit: Please move if this should not be in non-av.

Back in the 70s I took a trip while listening to Led Zeppelin. Don't remember much about the trip but it had three letters and it went really high.

You still can ride in a real one: http://zeppelintours.com/

Normally, what you see (Goodyear, etc) are airships, or blimps. Not true Zeppelins.

I forgot to get on one of those before I moved from San Francisco. They were cool to see.

Not having rideen on (he couldn´t afford it anyway), but my paternal grandfather served voluntarely in the Reichswehr in 1932 (his idea was that with the volunteer training, if he would ever be called in, he automatically would get into a NCO position. It happened then in 1940, when he got drafted into an AA unit of the Luftwaffe as Unteroffizier (Corporal)).
Back during his training in 1932, his company was several times marched from their barracks in Berlin to the Tempelhofer Feld (later THF) to act as ground crew for the Graf Zeppelin.
According to him the thing was HUGE, it seemed to fill the sky from horizon to horizon.

Yep, that's on my list of things to do next time I get out to the SF Bay area.

It leaves from Moffet Field, from the huge hangars they built for US Navy dirigibles in the 20s and 30s that were designed to patrol for enemy submarines. It's the same place where the Google guys keep their MIGs and the 767.

That and a trip to The Computer History Museum will make my nerd trip to the Bay area complete!
