Longest Runway At Sea Level?

Wed May 22, 2013 12:41 pm

I was wondering what was the longest runway at sea level, and why it is that long?

I know all (or most of) the super long ones are higher up in altitude because the higher you are the thinner the air is and the more room you need to gain the proper V1 and V2 speeds.

A couple that come to mind are DOH and the shuttle landing facility in Florida.

Edit:
On second thought google is wonderful. Here is a list of the longest runways in the world. Shouldn't take too much effort to figure out which ones are at or near sea level.

I believe that Edwards Air Force Base in California has a very long runway.

15,000ft runway plus 9,500ft of 'lakebed runway' as per wikipedia.

Depends on the definition of near sea level, but Ramenskoye at #2 and Ulyanovsk Vostochny at #3 are at 5402m long at 123m ASL and 5000m long at 77m ASL respectively.

Agreed; good point. Going in the other direction, according to the GCM, AMS is said to be 3800 m @ minus 2 metres elevation.

So, in a way, the winner so far.....

On the other hand, the longest runway at altitude is 6400' at Lake County Airport (KLXV)  http://skyvector.com/airport/LXV/Lake-County-Airport

Not even close friend. La Paz, Bolivia makes LXV look like child's play.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Alto_International_Airport

The question in this thread asked about the longest runway at sea level. Edwards Air Force Base is about 2,300 feet above sea level.

The new Quito (UIO/SEQM) has an even longer runway, and it's nowhere near the same elevation above sea level.  UIO" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UIO

YVR is at exactly sea level - 26L/08R is 11,500' which isnt record breaking, but pretty long.

As speedygonzales says it depends on how you define sea level, but Hammad at +11m is pretty close, and is 4,850m

OK, probably not the longest, but X44 is 14,000 feet and at sea level--always at sea level, not just MSL.

X44 certainly is at sea level since it is the sea.

MIA 9/27 is a respectful 13,000ft.
