DL 767 Engine Problems?

Wed Aug 28, 2013 9:56 am

N16065 departed LHR at 10.40 on DL4 with heavy vibrating/grinding sound coming from one of the engines. It hasn't turned back yet though.

Flight status shows a 2 hour delay. Did it turn back?

According to flightaware it went up to FL320, before descending to FL270. It has been at FL270 for several minutes now.

And DL267 AMS-BOS , A330 reg N855NW returned to AMS immediately after take-off with presumably smoke in the cabin.

Thread title very misleading. Makes it sound like DL is having engine problems with the entire 767 fleet.

Just a routine mechanical issue that happens every day. They were not looking at death on a cracker. Some folks on here get waaaaaay to excited about this stuff.

I personally wouldn't call heavy vibrations, loud engine noise and a diversion routine. In fact, I think the statistical probability of these events happening to a pilot during their career is quite low. Pilots are well trained to handle these events, but they are far from routine. IMHO.

And DL205 (763) JFK-AMS August 22 which turned around and returned to JFK when near Prince Edward Island in Canada and DL264 (A333) MSP-AMS August 26 that was almost to Greenland when it turned around and diverted to JFK. Was curious what caused that one. Following from Transport Canada daily occurrence summaries.

A Delta Air Lines Boeing 767 300 (DAL205) from New York, NY (KJFK) to Amsterdam (EHAM) requested return to KJFK due to equipment issues. No assistance requested. No operational impact.

A Delta Air Lines Airbus A330-300 (DAL264) from Minneapolis, MN (KMSP) to Amsterdam (EHAM) was at FL380 at 0422Z just past 59N 050W and reported an unspecified technical issue that required a diversion to New York (KJFK). The aircraft was cleared on a route back into domestic airspace and remained at FL380. No emergency and no assistance required.

The scenic route MSP-JFK.

It's not normal on any given flight, but I agree with DTWPurserBoy; this is a daily happening in the industry and within most large airlines. As for your second point, I have personally had three actual inflight engine failures in turbojet aircraft (B-727, B-757, and MD-80) and an additional engine failure on the ground in a B-767. It is extremely possible to see an engine failure in a career, even today.
