Well there are quite a few other more mainstream airlines that I think have terrible names:

- JetStar
- Air PullmanTour
- Blue1
- Any TUI-something or whatever-fly
- Ryanair
- Peach
- White (Colored by you? Seriously?)
- AirTran
- Air Transat
- Jet Airways (Can they get any more generic?)
- Darwin Airline
- Fly Baboo (Or was it Fly Baboons?)
- Gol

Cheers

I like how they described 'Hooters' as a "Redneck Restaurant Chain". Now I have chowed down on a few 'Hooters Wings' in my day, but I never picked on that "Redneck" vibe, perhaps my attention was drawn elsewhere   .

Yes, JetAirFly and Jet4You we're definitely amongst the worst airline names I've ever heard. "Hmm, we have to make it sound like something that flies, and we have jets, and we're an airline, how about JetAirFly?"

The new consolidated brand name for AirFrance's subsidiaries "Hop!" is in my opinion terrible as well. With the French pronounciation it sounds like 'Op!, what the hell is that all about? The saddest part about all these ridiculous names is that the airline likely paid a marketing agency so much money to come up with a name, that noone dares not to use it after they come up with something horrible like Hop!

Furthermore I have a pet peeve against airlines with Jet in their names who fly props alongside jets, or in some cases no jets at all!

I nominate Gazpromavia and Grozny Avia. The latter may not seem obvious, but in Russian 'Grozny' (грозный) means 'dreadful' or 'awful' - in the fearsome or horrible sense. Not a pretty name.

There's been two Kiwi airlines, one in the US and one in New Zealand that were around at about the same time in the 1990s:

The US airline used the name because the airline was founded by former Eastern Air Lines pilots and they had jokingly named their group kiwi after the bird since they too were flightless. The New Zealand one made a bit more since because the kiwi bird is a native bird and a symbol of the country.

- Air Transat

Actually, I find it clever for a charter airline that essentially serves beach destinations (besides Europe during summers) where people can sit or lay on deckchairs. Transat is the French word for deckchair and since Transat A.T. is based in French-speaking Québec it fits pretty well their purpose.

We all know why Kingfisher Airlines was so named, but kingfishers spend a lot of time diving almost vertically into ponds and rivers. Having said that, they survive to fly again......

Air Plus Comet? Something that takes weeks or months to go from horizon to horizon, leaving trails of dust and ionised particles, for almost eternity?

For their last 7 years of existence (1979-86) after being purchased by conglomerate Transamerica Corporation they changed their name to Transamerica Airlines.

For several years in the late 1970s and 1980s they operated scheduled services to a few points in Europe (both as Trans International and then Transamerica).

I'd say so as they take "jet" "air" and "fly" and shove them together.

That said, Corsairfly is also terrible - especially as Corse Air used to have a fantastic livery.

I believe it has a link with trans-Atlantic. These transats were first named "chaise de pont", literally deck chairs. However their name evolved because they were associated with trans-Atlantic ocean liners. Today, they are still called transat in French.

You're both correct.
Note : if masculine ("un transat") refers to a deckchair. If feminine ("une transat") refers to a transatlantic race.

I would not be so negative. In French, Hop! refers to something quick and easy, which may be appropriate for a regional airline. Air France Regional, or Air France Express would have sounded too long or too statutory. Hop! is easy to remember and rather distinctive among European competitors.

Or it could be likened to an aircraft built by de Haviland which had a propensity to crash in its Mark 1 model, not to mention that was in the 1950's, so very dated and possibly (in PAX minds) dangerous

I'd rather that PR had succeeded in acquiring Z2 (w/ valuable NAIA slots to boot) and could use Zest Air as their domestic low-cost, leisure brand...exudes that adventurous spirit and zest for flying. As things stand, Zest Air is reduced to a placeholder...lively livery disappearing with its planes.....

Yes I was, I knew there was a combination of these titles somewhere. Actually learnt something though, I remember Transamerica very well, didn't realise (or had forgotten) about the Trans International bit. But the idea was there with these funny play on words. Trans Global makes me think of the Freight agent.

LANICA: Formerly a Nicaraguan airline.

The running joke in Nicaragua at the time, particularly in Managua (talk about a badly picked acronym) was that they were the "flying commode" as " La nica" is the commode some people put near their beds at night. It would be "La Bacinica" but in Nicaragua it was shortened to "La nica" and then somebody comes and names an airline LANICA. You gotta wonder wether they were foreigners or what.

Wizz Air and Scoot are similar: they are all about the ability to fly/travel, i.e. to fly off, to travel. This effectively enables exploration, to broaden one's mind, to have fun, to see people, etc.

My initial vote goes to one of Air Canada's short-lived LCC attempts, "Zip."

Next, ATA Airlines, whose original full name (American TransAir) was easily confused with AirTran.

I never cared for UTA and LTU as airline names. At least TWA included the Trans World title on its aircraft (albeit not during all periods of its existence).

But, my vote for worst name goes to Our Airline. I understand the history of Air Nauru mismanagement, including its aircraft being used for wasteful junkets by government officials, but Our Airline lacks any semblance of identity.
