Does Orient Thai operate the B747 classic still? B 747-300? Do they fly them to HKG?

Guess they will stay for a while longer?

The Orient Thai classic -300 series is great. Apart from needing a sponge bath and complete "white" look, it's a grrreat ride. Very smooth and quiet. They have a great offer from Bangkok to Hong Kong.

Densly packed at all economy but comfortable. Sat at the 2nd row from the nose cone. Very stylish to see "olden days" interiors with attention to detail (colours and motifs on walls, etc). Noticed Japanese text and if I'm not mistaken JAL logo in the cabin. I flew last month.

Reminds me of my first ever flight to Asia and with a 747 in 1995! Just Finished high school, Dad a flight engineer with MS on the jumbo and off we flew from Cairo to Bangkok. Same sound of the "old school" engines. Music to my ears

OX still operate two 747-300s, one of which are in Hong Kong most days of the week.

I saw it at the gate in BKK about to dep for HKG last week - should have bought a ticket and hitched a ride!

As for how long it will last, I spoke to a Lebanese OX captain in Beirut the other week and he said the -300s will be gone by the end of the year.

So get your skates on - after that it'll only be doable on Mahan (which is a nice flight btw - ex UTA machines that still have maps of French Guyana, Saint Martin et al on the bulkheads!)!

Could it be that this is a high density 744 with winglets removed intended for shorter routes? I forget the designation but I think JAL did/does operate them.
...are we there yet?

The Orient Thai one is definetly a classic -300, not a -400D (domestic).

There is at least one difference I know of. The -300 has like the -100 and -200 series the Long antennas at the end of their wings (it might not be antennas, but some kind of sensors instead, but I think these are HF antennas IIRC). The -400D does not have these antennas at the end of the wings, the wing just Ends at the place where the -400 winglets got removed.

-300 with antennas at the end of the wings (like -100 and -200 series):

Those are HF antennae. In the late 80s, Boeing started offering these HF antennae installed in the leading edge of the vertical stab as an option on the B747 which a lot of airlines took, apparently due to the fact that these lasted longer hours between overhauls than the wing tip ones. All 744s have them in the vertical stab.

So not necessarily all 747-200s or 747-300s would have the wing-tip trailing HF antennae. I recall the AI 747-300s (VT-EPX / EPW) did not have them, nor did some of the later build B747-200s like EP-ICD of Iran Air (ex Martinair aircraft). You will find pictures of these if you do a photo search.

Is there a way to know if a specific Orient Thai flight is operated by a 747-300 or -400 ? It's not shown on their website and their flights aren't displayed on Kayak or other booking engines. I may take a trip to BKK just to fly on one !

I read somewhere recently, that the 400's and a 767 were on Hadj flights...

So, you may have a good chance over the next few weeks ....

Sure some HKG based A.nutters can give you the current prognosis.
