Simple question:
does Air France still allow the use of cell phones for voice communication in-flight? I know they were testing the idea, but I can't find any current information on it.

Yes. The technology providers are OnAir and AeroMobile and there is a GSM pico-cell on board with satellite backhaul. Due to FCC regulations currently it can only be used OUTSIDE of US airspace. And due to the nature of the technology the only US carriers supported are AT&T and T-Mobile US with international roaming turned on your account before-hand and international roaming switched on in your phone settings. Data roaming is available also @ EDGE speeds currently (no HSPA+ yet).
Verizon Wireless and Sprint global phones (ones with GSM) are NOT supported.

Also AT&T has a restriction on international roaming sometimes where there's a glitch and it says "You can only place international calls to the visited destination and the USA in this international destination...". If you need to place a call to a 3rd country while roaming you can call AT&T and tell the international roaming department to remove the restriction but you are responsible for any billing that may occur (this is a bill shock feature.)

Well this is cheaper than Airfone which used a proprietary Verizon land network. At $2.50/minute I don't think you will have many users. Plus most people I believe are reasonable and professional and keep it to a minimum.
